I highly dobut a character slot would generate such a spike.

You underestimate the population of alt-aholics.
Really now, the gold to gem is awful and this spike made it even more awful completely ruining any chance to have a 20% discount. It just makes no sense.

The real currency vs gems stays the same.
Edit: Need more coffee – but you know what I meant.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

I myself bought 3.
We also had a huge spike the last time we had this sale early on in the year.

Sales are for people who buy gems with cash or prudently stockpile gems beforehand.
People who react to sales get a largely deserved hosing down.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

The 20% discount isn’t meant for people who convert gold to gems. It’s meant for players who want to spend real $.

20% price discount is not equivalent to a 20% floating rate cut

My opinion in a nutshell. I regularly pump my gold into gems every couple of days or so.
I also bought 3 character slots myself, so I’ll have at least one for each class. Debating on buying one more since I still have a decent pool of gems.
Been waiting for this sale.
So who’s laughing at my “buy a few gems every day” philosophy now?

Same. Bought 2k worth of gems in March for 2g/100 in prep for a char slot sale.

Why, when the last time character slots went on sale also caused a gem spike?

That’s not a terrible way to do it, really.

Hopefully, if trend follows logic this should cause a decrease in gem price (gold>gems). If it indeed attracts more cash>gems players then they should have 180 left over gems from $10. Those extra gems have more potential to be converted to gold than the lack of extra gems prior to the sale…if that makes any sense.
However, I sorta doubt this will happen. Call it intuition, call it a hunch, call it a tin foil conspiracy, but we will see.
Yep I got a character slot as well, from my stockpile of gems I got by putting about half my TP profits into gold→gems. (Thanks to whoever’s forum post I saw a month ago talking about this idea.)
It seems EVERYTHING in the BLTC is about exploiting the impatient, including the gem exchange.

The whole “science” of marketing is based on manipulating and exploiting human nature.

It’s Saturday.
All the weekend warriors are online – the influx of additional players always throws the TP for a loop, increased demand across the board coupled with increased supply in the materials sector.
…as well as us veteran traders all prepped and waiting to sell them our fine wares at an elevated price.

That doesn’t make sense… Gems would be driven DOWN if ppl were using parts of their IRL Paychecks every friday. (which begs the question… WHY AREN’T THEY?). Nah it looks more like the only ppl still playing this game the most are the free-loaders. (proud to be a free loader myself just like I was in GW1).
PS: ridiculous Animal Hoodies…
Anet could stop this entire self-defeating cycle if they just removed that 30% penalty from people who exchange their Gems for Gold…. (shoulder that entire sink/penalty on the people turning Gold back into Gems…)
(edited by ilr.9675)
But you want them to buy gems with cash and this way they show no favoritism since both sides get penalized from the true rate.
RIP City of Heroes
I’m up to 30 slots now, bought 5 slots this time.
Waited a bit to price get back down thou.
Outsource rng → profit.

Only if folks were using those gems to buy gold. Gem store purchases like character slots etc. don’t affect the gold <-> gem exchange rate.

What could one do with so many slots?
Here’s a little alternate thinking.
Spikes like this are great opportunities for lazy/rich people to get gold via conversion at a somewhat more favorable rate. I think that surly happens, but that body of players is probably such a small % that their effect on reducing spikes is slight. Just guessing of course.

I am neither lazy nor rich and buy gems with cash. I don’t think I’ve ever converted gems to gold simply because there’s nothing I can buy with gold that I want as much as the things I can buy with gems. That in my opinion, is the primary reason why the exchange rate favors the gem to gold conversion. The gem store stuff is just way more attractive than the things that have to be bought with gold. The only thing I can think of in the game that I want enough to pay the going price in gold for is some of the cultural or order gear.

Preparation for next big event the dragon bash. I personal stock up like 3k gems.

You say “exploiting,” I say “providing a service for.” Services cost money.
Tempted as I was to buy the on sale character slot, I am saving what few gems I have left for the Dragon Bash (just in case there’s anything nice to buy).
I do feel sorry for people who have to convert gold > gems, it’s pretty terrible. I did it myself once, and regretted it.

I had a 20% discount. Then again, I have a job. This discount does not take farmers into account, and for good reason.

Also got a discount, and I didn’t spend a single real-life dollar on gems.
(stock up on gems while they’re low, people!)

As someone else who buys his gems with cash, I ration myself carefully. I have “X” money to spend on gems. I will get those gems, and make them last. (I usually go monthly, but have changed it from “beginning of month” to “when the Living Story theme changes”. Always good to see the new goods when deciding how much of my mad money goes to GW2.) On VERY rare occasion, I spend gold on gems, usually because I’m slightly short of a purchase (say I have 450 gems and something costs 600).
I have no problem with spending money on GW2, because I want to support the game. I like the game. Plus, I don’t go crazy on the store. As I said, I set myself a limit, and if it runs out, so be it.
Anyway. Character slots will go on sale again eventually. I spent all my Southsun gems and had nothing for last weekend, but eventually, I will have gems at the right time.
