This thing is driving me crazy. I knew I wanted one of these the first time I saw the skin, very unique and will actually work on my Charr characters without floating awkwardly (because its supposed to float :p).

Saw the price sitting at 10G on day one. Figured the price would go down, because pretty much every back item skin has started high when it first appeared and only went down in price after that, often signifigantly so, after the initial wave of “gotta have it first” buyers and sellers. Desert Rose starting at 10g and ending up at 2-3g for the whole event, for instance. Dream Catchers starting at 15g and hitting around 5-6g after the initial pricing. And so I held off, figuring maybe I could grab it for 5g or something.

Price jumped to 20g. Great.

Price starts going back down. OK, so maybe the initial price high just hit a little late and NOW the price is gonna drop as usual. Seems to be the case at the time, goes down to around 16g or so when I check it on Friday. I put in an 10g buy offer just on the off chance it gets that low over the weekend, since I don’t play on the weekend. Figure at the very least I can get it at the lowest price its been at, and if it goes cheaper then so be it.

Check on Monday morning. I think it was 14g at that point. OK, on track, still going down… nice. Not as fast as I’d like, but at least its still dropping.

Monday night, price is back up to 18g. Ugh.

This morning… 28g?!? What… huh… WHY? What the heck is this thing doing, the prices are all over the place. Its not just sell pricing either, the buy offers are going up right along with it, sitting at 24g right now. I thought I was making a good decision holding off and not buying day 1, but more and more its looking like a huge mistake instead. I had the 10g I could have spent on the thing day 1. I do not have the 28g I now would need to buy it.

I really don’t know what to do about this thing. Should I break down, liquidate my ecto and / or T6 stock to buy this thing before the price jumps even more, or is the price going to drop back down? Can anyone see where this thing is going, or is it just an enigma?

Also, anyone have a guess as to why the price keeps jumping? Almost every player I’ve seen comment on the Spore Skin says its ugly (usually something like “unique, but ugly”), and I haven’t seen a single player actually using it. So why is it so popular? Just a huge rush of flippers? I realize the number of players doing the tower is probably dwindling so the supply isn’t rising as fast, but if its such a terrible skin it should still be going down or at least holding steady, not jumping like it found a terrantula under its bed.

good to know, i’ll just hold on to mine then :P
‘dwindling’ numbers of players inside the tower
is an understatement. almost nobody does it anymore
because other things are way more rewarding so i guess
supply isn’t refreshed anymore since the droprate
seems to be not very high to begin with.

I still get into overflow nearly every time I enter the tower (though I did actually manage to get into my main server tower for the first time every last night). And even overflow itself is usually fairly populated. So I don’t think its quite to the level of “almost nobody”.

Reminds me of the Aspect back items. Still have my Sun and Wind Aspect backs…. and that price just keeps climbing.

I wish. I bought my Lightning Catcher for a 5g offer during the event, because the price did actually go down (and then got a drop of a Lightning Catcher which, like you, I’m holding on to). This is… not like that. The price is going up and up before the event is even over. Or even close to over, based on the progress bar.

Again it just comes down to those wealthy TP folk who dun play the game.

Most likely because people have stopped doing the content, hence less drops.

Player behaviour seems to have changed. In past Living Story chapters, players could be counted on to reliably zerg the content for the full duration, thus driving prices lower and lower as the chapter went on. However, it seems that now players are only doing the new content for as long as it takes to complete their achievements, and then go back to dungeons/Champ-trains/WvW as these activities are more profitable than the Living Story content. (Another factor is that the Living Story areas are considered too difficult/annoying.)

As such, it seems that the cheapest time to buy now is probably in the early stages of the content, UNLESS the good in question is supplied in mass quantity and has no desired tradable item. Pristine Toxic Spores are a good example. They started at around 1 silver, jumped to about 2.5 silver at their highest peak, and have now settled back to about 1.5 silver due to there being no more new things to buy with them when Nightmares Within came out.

That thing is ugly, so when it dropped for me (along with the air-breather) from my first tri-key chest, I sold it immediately for 15gp (after Evon-tax). I don’t regret it, even if it is now higher priced.

Wanze (or someone in Tin Foil [HATS]) will sell it for 42gp in a week’s time I’m sure.

Hmm. An interesting insight, and something for me to keep in mind for future content (obviously at this point its too little too late for the Toxic Spore, and I broke down and put up a 20g offer last night when the price dropped slightly, which got filled so I can stop fussing with the darn thing). I guess that is one advantage of super-grindy achievements (which the Tower is mostly free of), it keeps people playing longer and in turn drives prices on stuff down.

It probably doesn’t help that the Tower is pretty polarizing for people, too. Some enjoy the solo difficulty or have guilds / friends to run it with so they’re never alone, others find the solo experience of dying repeatedly unpleasant and lack groups to run with aside from impromptu zergs.
