Transmutation Splitter - how far does it go?

Q:

Simple curiosity before I blow money on a Transmutation Splitter!

The situation is as follows:
I bought a level 80 item with a gorgeous skin.
I put the level 80 skin onto a level 20 item – transmute crystal used.
I levelled, and kept moving the skin onto items as I levelled – transmute stones.

If I use a Transmutation Splitter, do I get the original level 80 item back, plus the current level 79 status item?

Or will it give me the current level 79 item and the level 75 item from before it back, permanently evoking the original level 80 item from the mix?

EDIT
Thanks Taku, for answering this one! Guess I’ll collect that instead then.

A:

It will only remember the latest step which in this case is the mutation between lvl 75 item and lvl 79 item.

So you’ll just have to cough up the money or dungeon tokens to get a new lvl 80 item for exotic stats.

You get current used skin item + a generic lvl 79 item (probably with the skin for crafting) with proper stats.

Example

CoF1 zerk GS trasmuted into Fractal GS trasmuted into Twilight

Got back Twilight + Pearl zerk GS (+ sigil)

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

It splits it into the item with the skin and the item with the stats used.

Example: I had a cof zerker warhorn which ive transmuted many times into various skins and then finally into the howler. When i used the splitter i got the howler and the cof warhorn + the current sigil seperated out aswell. I lost my godskull skin even though that was the skin of the warhorn before it was transmuted into the howler. So any previous transmuted skins are lost, it only remembers the item used for the stats and the item used for the current skin.

LordByrons example above would actually give back twilight + cof GS and the sigil. The only way it would give back a pearl gs is if you used a pearl gs for the stats.
