Trash from the store
A lot of people actually prefer that it port them back to where they originally used the home portal stone.
Lots of people have harvestable things in their home instance that they can collect from and other do-whattees there, so the sotne is nice for them to quickly port there, do their thang, and then port back to where they are.
The stone was never meant to be a means of free transportation to your capital city, that would be pointless, just waypoint.
It is always best to research (the Wiki is good for this) any item that you may feel costs a significant amount of Gems or Gold before purchasing.
The Home Portal Stone sounds as if it is working as intended in this case.
Good luck.
If it doesn’t work as you expected it to, you can try to get a refund through customer service. They might give it to you.
I bought one to go back to where I was in the world.
So you are saying its trash because you can exploit it in to being a free trip across the map?

OP is saying it doesn’t work in a way that he felt made sense. There is no reason to denigrate him about expecting more than was delivered.

What GOSU said. Also I wouldn’t call it an exploit – he just paid a LOT of waypoint fees in advance.

It’s an exploit if you teleport to your home instance in a city then leave that instance? ahahahahaha….and it costs 900 gems too! I can’t believe you said that.
Other games have items that allow you to port to a particular city so I can definitely see the confusion with this item. I would have assumed you would stay in the city if you used it.
I guess I can see why you might also like it to work the way it does if you only have one character. But I have several so it is no problem to switch to a different character to gather in my Home Instance and then back to the character I was playing.
So I would prefer it allowed you to stay in the city.
I think it would be neat if you could use the stone and appear in your home district, THEN you could 1) Walk out the front portal to the city or 2) Use the stone to get back to where you were last…. That’s what I would assumed it would do but I guess not. Regardless I would not drop 900 gems on anything like that
I thought you would be able to walk out, as well, but if not, I guess you can just waypoint into the city. It’s surely cheaper than waypointing in from wherever you were, and if it’s a cost-issue, use the Mists.
It did specifically say the function of the Stone was to port into your Home Instance and back to wherever you were…. /shrug

This is true, however…
It doesn’t state that if you try to leave the instance via the portal over your minimap you’d get taken back to where you were. I understand how one would expect to use the portal stone to get to the home instance, but one can’t assume you wouldn’t be able to exit the instance and be in your city, since you’re already there.
It’s a reasonable assumption to make.
You should’ve researched more on the item before buying it. There were several posts explaining what it does.
Op has a point. When you go through the home instance/city portal it should send you to the city, not back to wherever you came from. That’s either a bug or a design flaw.

For the money it costs, this would make it a lot more useful.
I don’t understand. When I use the homestone with my Asura, I can turn around and leave the home instance through the big red portal labelled “Rata Sum” and I am in Rata Sum. If I leave it via the small right arrow above the mini map I go where I was before.
Same goes for Holbraek and its home instance.
I am not at home and can’t test it. Is that not possible for the DR home instance?

So it seems to work exactly as advertised.
Could have posted in the bltc forum to get a better response.

There is no big red portal in Divinty’s reach. Usually you have to click on the star from your personal story which I finished. I’ll have to test it out. I originally had the stone on a Sylvari and moved it to an Asura for convenience because of the layout of home instance nodes anyway.
I recently purchased the Home Portal Stone and it was a waste of 900gems. When used it ported me to Salma District and when I try’d to leave the instance to go to the bank/crafting station or the trading post to pick up items it ported me back to where I was originally. Further more you one get 1 stone instead of all my characters getting it.
This is exactly why it is a trash item.
It however does exactly what the description sais.
If more usefull merchants/npc’s were added to the home instance i would consider this item. But not now.

There isn’t one in the Holbraek home instance either. But if you turn around and go to the nntrance door you can leave the instance and you are in Hoelbrak. I assumed that would be true for all cities…

Geez! That’s what I said. If you are agreeing, not sure why the ‘however’ is there.
Regardless….
I don’t have one, and now it’s unclear that if you ‘walk’ out of your instance, rather than using the Stone or the ‘shortcut arrow’, if you end up in your Racial City.
If so, it would seem acceptable. If not, then it may need some work…or bold warnings.

Ok, I can now confirm that you can leave the home instance and enter your home city for free for humans, Norns, Asurans and Charrs (I have no Sylvari character).
Simply turn around and go to your respective entrance and press F for Travel.
If you want to go back to where you came from use the shortcut arrow or the green starry indicator instead.

In the Sylvari instance you do have to go past the green star and there is a F for Travel to the grove….it isnt’ marked though so it took me a couple times going back to home before I saw where to go to get into the grove.
If you run past the green marker and interact with the actual city gate you should be able to exit to the city proper.
However once you do that the portal stone will no longer take you back to your original map.
Thanks for the clarification, Curtis. Doesn’t make me want to buy the stone any more, but more information is always good.

I mean… you do realize that makes one of the only reason the stone is good pretty moot. It would be great if we could, say,, be mapping, go to home instance, sell our stuff or whatever and then go right back to continue mapping. This is not the case with Asura and Sylvari iirc, and that needs to be fixed. Right? Right?
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?

I would definitely buy this item if my main was a Charr for when I ran out of salvage kits. Given that I am human it is not quite so tempting. As for Asura…

You also realize that the “city gate” is not clearly marked in all instances….Sylvari for instance there is not a “portal” or a “gate” there is a spot on the ground just barely past the green star that unless you’re holding down Ctrl you won’t see it. Now that I know it’s there it isn’t a problem, but still. >.<
I think the gem cost for the item itself is a bit too pricey for what it does.

Point taken, but simply opening the map and selecting another WP in the city SHOULD take you to that WP….does it not?

I 100% agree. Should have been 400 gems or 1000 gems for one on all characters….

This should have created a golden-colored waypoint inside your home instance, and a personal mini-asura gate somewhere nearby.
Using the waypoint would be free of charge, and the asura gate would returns you to wherever you were when you used it.
As it is the item is useless.
The permanent passes should have worked like that too. Use the pass, your characters get a free waypoint there. All characters can go to the royal terrace or the ship without having to carry the pass around.
Any tool or toy that can’t be used by all characters without buying one per character or constantly switching the item in the back in not worth more than 200 gems.
I’m still waiting for a “Tools & Toys” tab in the bank so each of my characters can get their own, then buying those will be worth it.
Gonna chime in once again on this topic.
For this item to be even remotely worth 900 gems, banking and all the other niceties of visiting a town should be included.
When I first saw the item I actually thought it would portal you to your Cultural Home, not your exclusive instance in it.
The item needs to portal you to your cultural home, and back again. Otherwise I don’t see it even being half the listed cost.
Someone needs to man up and rethink this item and be willing to admit the current state is just bad.

You have ALWAYS been able to leave a map, do full services and return to the same position (as far as I am aware). It’s called entering WvW (your Server Borderlands). EVERYTHING you need is there (granted not as convenient locations as some other places). To return, open the WvW menu and select EXIT WvW in the lower right corner.
This item was not intended to replace this function but give access to the home gathering nodes. Granted, the item is being misinterpreted by many buyers…..so there is a perception problem (that is a REAL problem, none the less).
I don’t think the item is bad, but I will agree the explanation / description could be improved and the price is certainly questionable.

As a sylvari mainer i can say that isnt true, sylvari have that armor repair merch near the exit although i have heard it is a problem for asuran characters.

Good to know. I do know that it isn’t as much as the other races though, but yeah. At least you can sell. Asura cannot do anything but mine their nodes, cut their trees, and fill up their packs with candy corn they don’t need. ^^ (I have an Asura of each profession so this is terrible for me)

Wouldn’t it be nice if Living Story rewards gave us crafting stations in our home instance? And a trading post? And a forge?
You know, actually make it feel like a home, and make that warp stone worth its gems?
The original post was that someone felt they didn’t get what they expected. I hope the OP created a support ticket and requested a refund. I don’t know if they will get one, but it only takes a few minutes to submit one.
I do agree that people should do research before spending a lot of gems on an item. I further agree that it would have been more useful if the portal stone took you to a home instance that had bank access, a standard merchant, and, ideally, a crafting station.
But reality is that customers often read what they want to have (and not what they will actually get) and vendors (Evon & his Gem Store in this case) sometimes offer goods or services that aren’t worth their costs to most people.
tl;dr I’m sorry that OP spent 900 gems for something that turned out not to be worth the cost. I hope they can get a refund.
