Trouble Converting Skill points into Gold
The problem is there are too many skillpoints nowadays. I got over 600 spare skillpoints on my main and that is after creating superior siege weapons for wvw, crafting a legendary and converting t5 to t6 stuff.
A big reason for the change is the significant reduction in dust drop rates from Orr. A ton of material promotion recipes were profitable back when dust was cheap and abundant; now only a handful of promotions are profitable at all, without even considering the skill point costs.
Without a ton of promotion going on, skill points keep accumulating, and their value is dropping in turn.
I thought all the Mystic Weapons don’t require Dust, no? They only take an Eldritch scroll and a bit of Orichalcum/WOod. and still sell for 8G+.

They don’t take dust, but they do take so many skill points that you don’t get much of a return on them. I just spot checked a couple recipes and 7-8 silver per skill point looks about typical. That’s honestly not bad these days but nothing to get excited about.
unless something is done about Dust prices SP’s will continue to drop in value since there is no good reason to spend them.
some core → lodestone does yield a profit even with the TP tax. which ones are profitable change day-to-day, but I do see it.
and, yes, Mystic weapons are pretty guaranteed to give a profit, though the SP : gold ratio is a bit low. that’s what happens when you sell in bulk: cheaper but more reliable.

I’ve done 3 Vision of the Mists that have netted me about 20g in profit. It works in many cases if you can get the buy orders filled on things like ecto and ori.
A friend of mine made The Anomaly, and did ok. It sells for around 120g, and takes 250 skill points, 250 ecto, and 100 mystic coins.
250 ecto x .25 = 62.5g
100 mystic coins x .05 = 5g
120g – 67.5g = 52.5g profit
52.5g / 250 skill points = 21 silver per skill point
Atleast its better then 10 silver or less. It’s high demand skin aswell, his sold within a day for 120g.
I don’t know about you guys, but whenever there is a currency/item out there that has a fixed rate of acquisition, I’m not sure if I would be willing to spend it so willingly.
Stuff like karma, skill points, laurels – that kind of stuff is hard to come by on a fly.
Let’s say that they come out in 2 months a whole set of items that can be purchased with those three. Well, now that you wasted all that currency, you’re gonna have to start all over again.
21s per skill point seems like a lot, but when you look at how long it takes to get a skill point, it’s a pretty inefficient way of making money.
600 skill points takes a LONG time to get. At current rates, that’s only 126g.
126G can be easily earned by a hardcore farmer in a week. I get that in about 2 weeks. Casuals, 1-2 months.

I think if you already have the materials anyway, it wouldn’t be a bad way to boost your wallet. But , yeah trading skill points for G is pretty much not a good goal choice.
there is an easy way to get skill points: make a new alt and simply run around getting all the SP on the map (202 of them). You’ll probably need to get to level 60 or so by the end (which just gives you more). it takes maybe 10 hours? iuno. I did it part time over a week. if it does take 10 hours, thats 20 per hour, and if they are worth 20s each, that’s 4g per hour. comparable to most other forms of income. and if you were going to level that alt anyways…

Not all the skillpoints are communal and you actually need to fight mobs. You won’t be able to level fast enough to keep up with the mobs in higher level maps.

I have found that The Anomaly provides the best return per skill point. Assuming you have 250 skill points lying around and assuming you purchase the 100 mystic coins and 250 globs of ectoplasm; each skill point will net you about 20 silver.

How are you calculating your purchases of ecto/mystic coins? With sell orders on spidy or buy orders?

Completing a skill challenge grants about 7.5% of a level if I recall correctly. If we assume for every skill challenge completed, the player discovers one waypoint, one point of interest, and one map reveal (at about 5%, 2%, and 5% respectively, honestly those are guesses based on vague memory as a quick search didn’t find the exact amounts), the player would gain only 40 levels through this method. So to say it wouldn’t be enough is correct, although it shouldn’t take too much side-work to get those other 38 levels (crafting/story missions/AC runs/etc). But I’d question the 10 hour estimate as well. That’s only 3 minutes per skill challenge, on a character that presumably has no waypoints unlocked.
Although I’d agree with Vol that skill points are a currency you might want to be more judicious with, they aren’t as drastically difficult to obtain as some might make it seem either. Each (first run) daily dungeon completion awards 2/3 of a skill point in the final reward alone, making a dungeon run worth approximately 1 skill point. With 25 dungeons, that could be 25 skill points per day through that method. Pent/Shelt aren’t as lucrative anymore, but still likely provide a return of 2-4 skill points per hour (more if you spam XP and Killstreak boosters).
Then there’s the forgotten one, 35 fractal relics can be traded for a skill point. Fractal level 26 awards 100 relics for the first daily completion and takes less than an hour to complete (unless your group sucks or you end up going Cliffside-Dredge-Grawl). Fractal 30 would grant a slightly higher rate than that (and can be completed the same day) and Fractal 10 and 2 could also be done for slightly lesser returns.
Theoretically, skill points are a limited acquisition currency, but only by the same measure that says gold is as well (excluding real money purchases). I’d lump karma into that bucket as well. Both karma and skill points are more akin to gold than they are to laurels or commendations.

Buy orders.
Mystic Coins and Ectoplasms are high volume trades. If you’re patient enough you can get very good deals on them.
