Update on Trading Post
The name of it wasn’t politically correct… so the Red, White, Green, Blue and Yellow Lions protested…
I have to agree with Deulon.
I don’t even use Twitter; nor even browse the site. I come on here for my issues.
I only went on the Facebook page during launch because you guys shut the forums down.

At least it’ll be quieter after they’ve spent all this time hunting down and suspending/banning all the exploiters and gold spammers accounts.
@Deulon I don’t think you’re being told to settle. You’re being told ANet has decided that twitter is how they will be sending up to the minute information. Its up to you if you decide not to bookmark their feed – it doesn’t even require an account.
You don’t trust facebook or twitter, but you trust this website and game that has been compromised daily, resulting in service interruptions? You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth.
I’d have to agree with posters saying everything should stay on the forums for updates, it’s kind of dumb you have to go to twitter or facebook.
In all honesty, it doesn’t matter if more people have facebook, the reason they do it that way, is simply because they haven’t been able to fix their “cookie” issue they blame on other peoples’ firewalls, when people without firewalls (like myself) have experienced the same problem.
As for the Trading Post being down, I understand little maintenances here and there a few hours in length, but this is absurd.
You started maintenance when I was level 29 on my Thief, and now I am level 44, I am using level 29 gear (luckily I updated my gear to level 29, right before it went down, or I would have gear over 29 levels old) due to maintenance.
But currently I am questing in gear 15 levels old, working on 16, probably going to hit 20+ levels old if I hit 49 today, and it’s getting ridiculously difficult, if not impossible to even play the game now and quest, because my gear is so old and weak.
Not to mention, I didn’t buy anything over 8 slot bags before it went down, and what little inventory I have, is completely jammed full with blue mats that stack, to sell on the trading post, as is my account bank is jammed full.
So needless to say, Anet needs to realize having a trade post, and giving access to exp boosters, make it possible to gain a level every 30-45 minutes, meaning, if your TRADING POST IS DOWN FOR RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF TIME, people that SPEND MONEY ON GEMS completely new to the game to get ahead, hit a brick wall, and with gear 20 levels old, get to a point of where they simply CANNOT advance until the trading post comes up. (Which is nearly where I am at now, I am ridiculously weak squishy Thief barely able to survive 1v1s.)
Please for the love of Jesus, if your trading post is going to be down, update us, you realize when you say “There’s no update to give”, you WASTE peoples’ time, because that could mean it may be up in 15 minutes.
But if you simply tell us to expect it to be down another 4+ hours, I can go do other things.
I would rather you say to expect it to be down 4 more hours, and it come up in 1 hour, rather than NOTHING, and have to guess and waste time.
1. Such information should be posted on official website not some twitter (eventually twitter can be used for short maintenances but never for so long). Twitter/facebook etc. can be addition not main channel of communication.
2. We need information WHEN it will be done. It’s not working for more than 24 hours now. This is one of main parts of game so it’s not acceptable that retail game is not working.
3. At least put some bazaar functionality until TP will be done. Currently i cannot sold my goods and cannot buy anything to level my crafts.
As far as the twitter debate goes… Myntal.2596 I would quote you but for some reason some dipkitten decided it would be great to take out quote buttons. I swear this is why I hate technology as people want to always change things up. If it ain’t broke… don’t kitten with it. Anyways… Twitter is a complete disorganized mess, there is zero organization or structure there. Relying on Twitter is pure laziness as they don’t post here in the respected forum thread.
I hate twitter, I loathe facebook, I despise blogs and never visit those sites (ANets blogs when the game was in development were exceptions like the combat blog). Official forums are the places that one should have to go to for news not some 3rd party communication site. Wonder if anyone has started a petition for ANet to stop relying on these sites as it’skitten Go here looking for an answer and never get the answer but then find out I have to go to a twitter site is utterlykitten
Edit… never mind bout the quote button rant… for some reason all of a sudden now the icon is there when moments ago it wasn’t.

Did you know that by law, they are required to use their own site to disseminate updates.
They can use other sites, but the primary one must be their own.
They do not have the right to tell people to go off site for information.

That’s the point. #2 is THE point.
It is a retail game that is payed for. If someone sells me a car and says “expect to have problems out of it soon as you buy it” I probably won’t buy it. “Buying this car, you agree to our terms, and need to realize it can go down for absurdly extended periods of time, but we assure you, we will fix it”.
This is what BETA is for, preventing these problems, that’s the definition of beta you know, to prepare for a launch scenario.
This feels like BETA still mainly because it still is.
UPDATE: The trading post is down for maintenance, sooner or later will be up.
I think this is what everyone asked for… right? :/
Anets inability to keep us informed is just making people agitated. If that’s how they want to treat us then fine, I’ll take my time to someone who knows how to treat it’s customers.
Maybe they should take a leaf out of Trion’s book of customer service skills. They might learn something. As it is, I hate being left in the dark. I’m slowly toying with the idea of putting this game to bed already. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS PARAMOUNT!!!! Get that through your heads Anet.
Oh and stop using rubbish social networking sites for the mainstream of your update news. It’s beyond unprofessional.
Hey all—we hear you loud and clear. Thank you all for your feedback.
One challenge with some of the emergent issues is that when certain portions of our game experience issues, the forums will also be affected. As such, when we had login issues yesterday, as you know, we could not post any messaging that was hosted on our infrastructure because the forums were completely unavailable . With that, we relied on social media channels, which do not live on our infrastructure. As you might be aware, other big companies like Twitter will also handle outages this way—posting messaging on channels that are not hosted on their infrastructure.
Having said that, whenever we can for emergent issues (when they do not impact our infrastructure), we should be using the system broadcast on the forums for outages.
With regard to the current outage: at this time all commerce sites (Trading Post, Currency Exchange, Gem Store) are down right now and undergoing maintenance. We will provide an ETA as soon as we are able to.
Thanks again, everyone.

I never once said I don’t trust Facebook/Twitter. I have a Facebook account that I use on a daily basis.
I said that pertinent information about the game should be posted on the official game forums, simple as that. I am willing to bet that a lot of the people that are now following Guild Wars on Twitter/Facebook only did so after they read ON THESE FORUMS that updated information is going to be posted elsewhere.
So, I have to ask.. Why not skip the last step and put the information here? This is where most people go when they are looking for information about this game.
I don’t know about you, but when I am looking to purchase new hunting gear from Cabela’s I go to Cabela’s website, not their Facebook page.

I completely understand and it makes sense to use what tools are readily available. I just hope to see future updates and information posted on these forums when they are accessible.
so, if they don’t have an ETA yet… means, we have to wait 2-3 more days for TP? Otherwise they should announce: “tomorrow will be up” … or they want to say: “ETA 15 MINS”? :/

That’s fine and all, but even if not everyone is able to get on the official site, you are still required to post on it for those that can.
On top of that, there is an official Wiki page for Guild Wars 2 that you can also use and should use before you rely on social media sites.
Always post on official sites first, that is the most important thing you can do.

We appreciate it and keep up the good work!
It’s going to be days. It’s been down for a full day and they still don’t know when they are going to be able to fix it apparently.
Welp, this will be a good time for me to get invested in different games. Maybe I’ll come back to GW2 when its ready, maybe I’ll get distracted and never find myself reinvested. This is exactly how I stopped playing Diablo 3.
Was having fun, auction house went down for too long, got distracted in other stuff and never went back.
However, I recognize the devs for doing what they need to do. It’s much better than not fixing problems at all.
The lack of an ETA simply makes it more aggravating. My guess is the dev’s best guess is 2 days to 4 weeks depending on whether they can fix/test something small or they need to overhaul a giant part of it. They must still be figuring that out.
Finally a decent official response, thanks for alleviating some concerns.
I dont know why its down again… I do know there not telling us crap. I just hit 80 a few days ago and recently i’ve been leveling my tailoring and jewel crafting w/e its called…
Now i just want to freaking make my gear but i need money to do that.. the best way to get money is to sell stuff on the BLTC… We are apparently not allowed to sell things in the chat channel any ways.. It was bad enough that the BLTC was down for the last 2 weeks almost and then up for what like 3 or 4 days that i know off…?
Come on Anet i realize your “small time” in terms of a corporation but communicate with us, Seriously.
Kind of annoyed atm tbh farmed like crazy the other night to earn some silver/gold and now the danged things down again. Not to mention that your income for this game is based off micro transactions. the longer and more often the BLTC is down the less money your making.
As well people get tired of waiting for things to work especially when they level cap…

Lol, you know if they say "No ETA, that means a VERY long time. May as well say it. No ETA means you forsee in your current workday it not coming up. Meaning it will be down another day.
/yawn I wouldn’t be alone considering going back to WoW, at least they got an xpac up and running smooth.

While I agree with you, would you rather be able to sell things, but you get none of the money from them?
Honestly i dont care the trading post still down,
because trading post was broken for me about one week.
It doesn’t matter to wait one more day.
Just be curious about the efficiency.
Wow, didn’t know the Trading Post was run on the same servers as the forums. You may want to see about changing that in the future if you make enough money selling gems on the Trading Post
Thank you for the update, even though it must have been hard getting on the forums due to the Trading Post being to blame.

Informative? What was informative about it? The fact that they couldn’t use their own website or the bit about the BLTC being down with no known ETA that everyone knew about already? Hardly a post saying ‘Hey x is wrong with the BLTC and we’re not sure when it’s going to be fixed’ was it?

Your forums might be down, but you do have a frontpage on this very website that SHOULD be put to good use. Instead of having old news and utter nonsense on it, go put up the latest patch notes/info on maintenance.
For what it’s worth, I think the concerns regarding people not wanting to use Facebook and Twitter should be taken a lot more seriously. Even those who have nothing to hide can have genuine issues for avoiding using them, such as stalkers. Not only that, but not everyone buys into social networking. That shouldn’t mean they should potentially miss out on important information.
As a compromise, what about some sort of in-game tab that is updated with news of major issues to let people know which bugs the Arena Net team are aware of? It’d do a lot of good as it would alleviate a lot of the stress that comes from things going wrong for both employees and customers alike. Plus, as a bonus, there would be less people making support tickets about issues explicitly stated as being known.

my bags are full, runnin outdated gear for my current level, gettin destroyed 1v1,going “downfall” meltdown here…
Darn, all my money is tied up in the trading post atm :p I hope the market stays the same so I don’t lose all my moneys
It sounds like hackers are using bots and destroying the game economy. They are probably working to stop the bots and ban the accounts that use them before bringing the trading company back online to mitigate the damage the bots are causing. My best guess……..
I am in full-blown love with this game -nearly to the point of addiction- but I have to agree that the Trading Post being down is a bummer. I’ve been exploring new areas just to keep leveling could really use a gear/weapon upgrade… hopefully they get this sorted soon.
I think that it would help to stop referring to it as ‘maintenance’. For anyone who has been close to IT, they know that maintenance is a set of routine IT activities with a bounded timeframe. I think what is happening with the BLTC is more break-fix. The service is broken and you are working to restore service. I know maintenance is a better sounding word, but it’s not what is happening.

I see your point, but ‘maintenance’ is pretty much the standard word used whenever things go awry in almost any company these days. I’m sure there’s a lot of legal stuff they have to adhere to when engaging in PR, so generally companies don’t tend to stray from such terms.
In a game that really has no end game content, where the point is to hit 80 , farm , sell, farm, sell , farm sell, get gold, level your proffs, make gear, having the trading post down as much as it has been can really halt what you are doing. Lets face it after 80 and maxed proffs the game is really just dress up.

…uh, only if you go into GW2 with the mentality that certain other MMO’s have forced you into. There’s plenty to do and see and it’s certainly not the developer’s fault if people rush to reach level 80 as soon as possible and skip the journey and sightseeing along the way.

Really?
I think, you’re just pick wrong kind of game. 10 minutes of reading information about this game, long before launch – would tell you the same.
I’m trying to be patient, but there is one thing I don’t understand. After a couple weeks, the TP was finally working at about 98%. There were only occasional issues and it was actually fully functional. Why, with all the other issues that need to be fixed with the game, would you then mess with what you finally had working, to the point of breaking it even worse than it was broken at launch? Also, why not revert to the way things were before you broke them and work on figuring out what went wrong with the update that broke them on the side?
The frustration isn’t just the loss of functionality, it’s the appearance that it’s all unnecessary. If you could answer the above two questions, that understanding may help with keeping the players patient while you work to fix it.

Ah, guff speak, I know guff speak when I hear it, lemme translate:
Hey all – Hello.
we hear you loud and clear – jeebus you guys can whine, well, we suddenly thought we should maybe say something,
Thank you all for your feedback. – got it, roger that, enough now, take a chill pill, k?
One challenge – not just a fix you know, this is a heroic effort on our part, we should maybe get medals and olympian status. Did I tell you I thought about climbing mount everest once?
emergent issues – yeah, we didn’t think it through, our coding is a bit, well, anyhoo this one sure bit us in the *rse.
As for the rest of that para it’s some kind of disclaimer but basically just admits what we know of what they did that was wrong. It gets interesting at the end though, it may be right for twitter ( a social networking site) to use other social networking sites for info when necessary, but is it right for your gaming community who will be spread across many different social networking sites (or none) but who will all be heading for your homepage? Hmm. So, I can translate the last sentence here as a pug-line: Pure Unadulterated Guff, it coud be here or not be here, it would make no difference. A woefully misfired justification.
So after all that disclaimer, true guff and justification we get an admission.
Having said that, etc… – yeah, we effed up. We maybe should have got info on here somewhere, sooner.
Note this is an admission, not an apology, perhaps, after all their disclaimer, true guff and justification they feel they don’t need to make one.
With regard to the current outage: etc… Aha! Finally the meat on the bones, the actual announcement. Nope, no……wait, there’s no meat, there’s just bone Apparently, the trading post is down and will be up again at some point. That’s good to know, thanks for that.
Thanks again everyone [smiley face] – heeeeeyyyy, we’re still friends right (and we still want your revenue generation).
/sigh
How about: Hey guys, apologies for the downtime you’re suffering right now, we know it hurts, we have a technical issue we’re working to resolve, sorry we didn’t get the information to you sooner on how serious it was. We can’t exactly tell you when it’s going to be up right now just that we’re working hard on it but we’ll give you an update in four hours if it’s not back by then.
Would that have been so hard?
Yours disgruntled,
Morbs.

Different teams work on different elements of the game. So the team that was working on the Trading Post stuff wouldn’t have been involved in, for example, fixing Event bugs.
That being said, the Trading Post had some bugs in it (first in first out wasn’t working) that were acknowledged and chances are someone / people found exploits with the existing bugs or new and imaginative ones to use that were destabilizing the entire system.
It may be that the tried to implement a fix and had serious impact issues – in that the “fix” broke a whole slew of other things that were working.
As to using twitter, facebook, reddit, 4chan, youtube, or whatever external site – it’s fine to do so so long as the main portal (being guildwars2.com) also carries the same information. Technology is great in that you can post a single update and have it on all of these platforms at once. Why ArenaNet is choosing not to do this… well, I’m sure they have their reasons (aka, someone probably didn’t think about it up front and since the main portal site was ‘down’ it was easier to post on social media. Besides, tons of people have a social media love.)
I’ll be taking a break tonight it looks like. I desperately want to upgrade using the TP before heading out adventuring again.
ya I’ll have to take a break to till it’s fixed, bank’s full invent’s also full of stuff I don’t want to sell at vendorprices. So I can’t do anything really accept perhaps trying to spam worlds to get my stuff sold but I really don’t feel much for that so I guess I’ll just have to wait for the fix to be ready… Hopefully they’ll be able to resolve the issues they’ve been having with BLTP soon. Because I can’t wait for days on end.

Just bought 500 cheeseburgers off tp /tum pat
Only thing I absolutely hate is that GW2 is almost unplayable to me without the Trading Post. This is day 2 for me without it working. I have 8 slot bags, my small “shared” inventory is full and my bags are all full with greens that I’d much rather sell than break down. It just kinda bugs me that without real money to expand my bank that I’m so dependant on the Trading Post. Unfortunately this also happens to be a time where I have very unlimited funds or I would have already bought more space or something. Other than that I love the game and was just starting to get into the Trading Post and learning how to make a bit of money : ) Guess have a lifelike economy can have alot of lifelike problems. Besides the illegal ways to exploit such as bugs and hacks I’m sure there’s people out there who have found other ways using the system to exploit funds or the gem/gold ratio.
No Trading Post, no way to trade with other players (other than the honor system – buying/selling via mail and praying the other person doesn’t screw you). I feel like I am playing a single player game that requires an internet connection..
While the TP was up but not working last night I was getting the ‘did not match a current item’ error when trying to purchase items. I tried several times and it appears, looking at my pick up tab today, that all that ‘failed’ last night actually succeeded and I have multiples of all the items I tried to order. Caveat emptor, if the TP tells you it failed don’t believe it. Sure will be nice when it actually works—especially when it’s up—it’s potentially a great feature of the game.
I did the same thing Raine, now I have like 23 bags that I’m not going to use. Hopefully I can sell them back if the TP ever starts working so I can try to recover some of the 13g I blew.
