I did these calculations a while ago. Figured I’d update the prices to more-recent gem prices and share them:

This is a summary of how much various storage options cost per space.
Using these inconsistent prices: 15g50s buys 100 gems, 1g buys a 15-slot bag, 2.5g buys a 18-slot bag, 11.5g buys a 20-slot bag.

bank expansion = 3g10s/space (6 × 15g50s / 30)
guild bank 50 = 12s/space ((1g + 2,500 × 20c) / 50)
guild bank 150 = 30s67c/sapce ((1g + 22,500 × 20c) / 150)
guild bank 250 = 42s40c/space ((1g + 52,500 × 20c) / 250)
bag expansion with a 15-slot bag = 4g20s/space ((4 × 15g50s + 1g) / 15)
bag expansion with a 18-slot bag = 3g58s/space ((4 × 15g50s + 2g50s) / 18)
bag expansion with a 20-slot bag = 3g68s/space ((4 × 15g50s + 11g50s) / 20)
new character with 4×15-slot bags = 1g60s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 4 × 1g) / 80)
new character with 4×18-slot bags = 1g46s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 4 × 2g50s) / 92)
new character with 4×20-slot bags = 1g70s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 4 × 11g50s) / 100)
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×15-slot bags = 2g54s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 3 × 4 × 15g50s + 7 × 1g) / 125)
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×18-slot bags = 2g24s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 3 × 4 × 15g50s + 7 × 2g50s) / 146)
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×20-slot bags = 2g44s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 3 × 4 × 15g50s + 7 × 11g50s) / 160)
collection expander: 1 collection expander is as expensive as 40 spaces in a bank or 295 spaces in a guild bank 250 or 85 [of the 92] spaces in an alt with 4×18-slot bags. (if it saves you from storing that many stacks of collections in those other places, it’s worth it)

Are you taking into account that there was a stealth increase to the cost of forming a guild? It’s now 1g instead of 20s.

I wasn’t taking the cost of forming a guild into account at all O_O
I didn’t remember there being one; I made my bank guilds so long ago. I’ll add that to the cost.

Thanks for posting this. I periodically do the same thing for guildies and it’s been interesting to watch how the most economical choice has changed over time.

One thing I try to remember is that financial efficiency is only one important criterion for deciding how to expand storage. The other is convenience: buying a new account for US$20 is a great way to add a ton of inventory slots, especially using a shared “personal” bank, but it’s horribly inconvenient and tedious for me. I prefer having a maxed out account vault so that I can find stuff easily; I relegate to guild bank & mules only those things that are rarely used.

I’m much the same. I maxed out my bank and bag slots for my characters because I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of switching guilds every time I wanted to access my guild storage. Convenience is a big factor in my purchasing decisions. I also have two mules now, whom I’ve kitted out with some old 20 slot bags and the Uncanny Jar/Karka Shell Box/Halloween Pails to store random junk.

Only recently have I fallen into the grasp of no storage space left so I’ve been making alt toons to bank stuff. Extremely helpful.

I decided to unlock all extra bag slots on most alts and equipped them with the rewards from so many ToT Bags (20 slot Halloween Pails) and I must say well worth it instead of the usual cost for a mere 20 slot bag which is usually ~13g alone. Ha.

Just a small correction: only 4 bags are being used in the calculation of the new character + 3 bag expansions rather than 7 bags. The numbers are only slightly off, so overall it doesn’t change much in terms of comparison values.

I also added the bag expansion + bag. cause sometimes people just want more space on their main

For someone who opened that much trick or treat bags, i expected you would list the cheaper 20 slot bag option rather then the 11,5g one

did you see the screen shots? My mains have mostly fractal bags. only exception is invisible bags or karka bag (obtained for free from the event).
For this, I went with bags that are permanently available. If you wanted cheapest, just tell people to run fractals and say 20-slot bags are free.

Technically these “free” bags are not really free if you consider opportunity cost. This is if you’re doing fractals specifically to get the bags.

that would mean 35 relics = 2g
uncommon box is 150 relics, so that’s 8g57s
exotic box is 250 relics = 14g28s

honestly, not as much as I thought they would be when I started doing this, but not ‘free’ either.

I was just referring to items that require tokens such as the fractal box or halloween pail. You can farm gold quicker than you can farm the tokens. Halloween pail is kind of out now since you can’t really farm candy corn outside of your home instance.

Be careful about how much you assume you can get from skill points as a lot of that profit could very well have nothing to do with the actual skill point. You could have an item that generates 2G profit but 1.5G is due to price differences and only 50s could be contributed to the skill point.
