Want: Limited timed Sale for cash->gold
I don’t think there is a way to distinguish between gems bought at different times.
Also, how the heck would it work? People need to buy gems first before they can convert them. So are you suggesting that they would get a boost on the conversion rate if they chose to sell it for gold? So nothing for someone who buys gems to get stuff from the Gem Store?
Also, if they ever did something like this, the people buying gems with gold would raise a massive kittenstorm about how unfair it is. And then they would have to do a sale on gold-to-gems transactions, effectively nullifying the whole thing.
They should just do a 20% sale on gems one week. Basically, if you bought 800 gems with IRL money, you’d instead get 960 gems for the same money. I can only imagine how much revenue that would generate for ANet in that one day alone (I’d probably buy a ton).
Best buy did this around xmas time. I got $30 worth for ~$27, so its not unheard of.
Frys (west coast USA) had gem card for $25 (instead of 30)… There are sales fairly often around, I’ve heard of walmart having sales on cards too, but i refuse to shop there.
Olba: The way to technically implement it is not that very interesting, as the idea itself is what is worth discussing. Maybe Anet could do a special purchase method that instead of giving gems to the player, directly sells them and sends the gold instead. Or they could give out an special item that grants 20% more gold for a set number of gems, or just add a +20% more gold for next X gems next to the gems to gold interface. Not sure if the technical detail is that important.
However, I doubt the people buying gems for gold have much to complain about. Its a sale. How often has anet sales been meet by kittenstorms? If anet can give 20% off on bank spaces, or 50% off from special edition, why can’t they do the same for gold transfers?

I’ve never seen a $30 gem card, only $25 for 2000…odd unless most stores just make you think you are getting a good deal because they are “on sale.”
