Why is ecto so low now? Will this change? Seems ever since metas chests were buffed, ecto was downhill even after the account bound nerf. Now its at a all time low. Seems like a good time to invest but what if it drops more? Does anyone know what is fueling this drop
The vast number out there. There are what a dozen metas with a guaranteed bonus chest now? Imagine thousands of players daily running those events, salvaging – the ecto number has rocketed. Also, the repeatable southon riot chests have a chance at a yellow, so that’s fuelling it even more
I think you described some of the causes in your post.
It will continue to go lower as chests are introduced in WvW, further increasing the ecto supply. (There was even a developer post to this effect.)
It seems unlikely the cost of ectos will increase substantially. I would find investment opportunities elsewhere, unless you’re interested in buying and waiting for a long time.

At the moment, people are farming like mad in Southsun with the insane +Magic Find buff from the Living Story NPC. Others are chest farming the Settler Instigators in Southsun. Either situation means that a lot of people are generating a lot of loot to be torn apart for ecto. By starting to flood the market, the prices are gradually going down.
Also there really isn’t a lot to spend your ecto on, besides the usual. If there was a vendor released tomorrow that have a bunch of items that all costs 50 ecto and some other special form of currency, the value of ecto would increase since there would be a large influx of people buying up ecto for all of their various characters.

All speculation, but now would be a terrible time to invest. A dev said somewhere that wvw ranks will now grant bonus chests that will reward ectos (possibly through rares). I honestly think it is their intention to lower the price of ectos to a level manageable so players can more easily acquire the best in slot gear (ascended amulets mainly since they cost 40 laurels +50 ectos and right now). I highly doubt more than 100 people have obtained them this way since that would be a significant amount of gold lost. I would say there target is about 10s per ecto since that would equate to 5g per accessory + 40 laurels.
1. World events = more rares = more ectos
2. Southsun event = more rares = more ectos
3. COF farming = more rares = more ectos
Upcoming #4: WvW rank chests will have a chance to drop rares = more ectos
17.5K of them were added to the market in under an hour Thursday morning, East Coast USA time which finally raised supply over demand. This was a couple of hours after roughly 9K ectos were bought in 2 1/2 hours starting at 11p EDT. I bring this up because both are substantial movements in ecto supply that occurred with 10 hours of each other and by amounts rarely if ever seen before.
It seems as if the majority of these new items were all priced at exactly 20 silver. So naturally all new items posted are priced under that because who wants to add their ectos to the end of a 16K+ item queue?
About an hour ago demand is again above supply but barely. Supply is still growing and is likely due to the reasons already stated. Prices had been hitting a high water mark of around 19s50c and as low as just above 18s, mere coppers above the highest bid.
