What the hell is this?
Lol. This is why spidey isn’t a source you should take at face value. Someone posted that item on the TP for an outrageous price, which caused the average posting price, which is what spidey tracks, to skyrocket. When that item was taken off, or sold, the average price dropped back down.
The Lost Shores should have stayed lost.
No, there’s still 3 of them up at ~8g each. If it was the average of all sell listings, the average would be almost 4g right now, not 40s.
As far as I know, what GW2Spidy tracks is in fact the highest buy / lowest sell prices – the averaging is done over time.
The important thing to note is that this is an item that’s realistically worth less than a silver, so basically all sell orders up right now are people hoping that someone accidentally or foolishly buys one of these – even at 40s it’s still ridiculously overpriced. The funniest thing about it is that anyone putting one up for 8g would’ve paid 40s in listing fees.

If you also look at the volume sell listings, you’ll note that at some points of the graph, there are very few listings (sometimes just the one listing), so it’s not just an effect of averaging.
Spidey is useful in providing trend information not available in the TP interface, but you do need to consider that information carefully before drawing conclusions.

I believe they use a “rolling” daily average system. I wouldn’t mind this so much if I could also see the current prices & volumes, so I could more easily determine if some of my items have sold while I’m at work.
You can see prices (and I believe volumes) in 15 minute increments.
Because it’s orders, not transactions, which are tracked.
The players can completely change those figures if they list a high enough proportion of the total amount in the TP at a high (or low) enough price.
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!
It’s not the proportions – it is in fact the lowest sell order. If you look up the item mentioned in the OP yourself, you will find that there is 4 sell orders at ~40s, 1 sell order at ~90s, and 3 at ~8g – an average of around 2.3g. The GW2Spidy data clearly doesn’t reflect this average value.
The average is a rolling average over a period of one day, though you can see the raw data that’s being averaged if you select that curve (click on “Sell Listings Raw Data”).

I should imagine that Spidy bins values that are wildly outside the expected when working out the average.
Use spidy to draw your attention to items, not to make the decision for you.
Used for that purpose, it works very well.

Do you have any evidence that this is the case? Last I checked, Spidy quite accurately reports only the lowest sell and highest buy price, and does exactly nothing with any of the other listings above or below those.
