Q:
The gold for gem prices are just ridiculous now, i payed 6g for 350 gems just for the make over kit, I remember when 100 gems was about 80 silver. I think more importantly, how do we make it go back down. Is it something that we as players control or is it anet calling the shot with it.
Indeed, this is ridiculous
I can’t upgrade my Storage / Inventory slot Characters
I have stops playing because of that …
Idea → Be able to buy extra storage with in-game currency (gold) or Karma !
Thanks
Be able to buy extra storage with in-game currency (gold) or Karma !
Thanks
Umm… you can. You take your gold and you buy gems. You use the gems to buy the upgrade.
That’s exactly what you are suggesting.
If you feel the gold price is too high then you can purchase gems directly.
To the OP: You realize that while you complain about how few gems you get for gold there are people who are complaining about how little gold they get for gems.
I think it depends on how much of a demand there is for it. The higher the demand the higher the prices. I for one wish it would go down too. I was very close to being able to buy myself several extra slots in my bank, but I loaned my money to my boyfriend instead because he wanted a mini at that time. A week or two later I make the same exact money back, and now I’m struggling just to make enough money for the gems I need. I can’t exactly buy gems because I don’t own Paypal or a credit card, and gem cards are not an option either because they don’t sell them in stores. (Ex.: Gamestop or Bestbuy)
Because players have more and more gold, and are using it to buy gems.

He means just buy slots without gems because they gem prices are just continuing to rise with all the events. Players are hoarding they’re gems till winters day so ppl who wants some new holiday item in the store have to pay an arm and a leg for it. The only way to get a gems right now is to either A. have a lot of money, or B. sPvP and with the top slots for payouts filled with the already premade sPvP teams theres really no way to get gems unless you use a gold seller. -.- I want to buy some make over kits for my characters because during launch i was rushed, and have a few sitting in my bank for when i want a fun change, but there’s no way im paying almost 16g for a stack of 5. And i dont buy gems using real life money because i dont have the ability to.
maybe you should spend $20 and actually buy the gems.
Its so easy for people with 300g to buy gems and thats why prices have gone up.
When the prices of gems via in-game currency exceeds the price gold sellers are asking for their gold, this creates a dangerous situation. They need to cap the inflation. Its up to 2g per 100 gems at this time. Don’t get me wrong, I too agree people need to stop being cheap kitten and just buy some gems with RL money, but at the rate things are going, I doubt even that would curb the out of control inflation. One big problem with buying the gems (with money/cc/cards, ect) is availability. I can’t use a credit card, paypal doesn’t recognize my small town bank (don’t ask, its been an ongoing battle with them for years) and no stores near here sell the game cards. If they would release game cards to more outlets I could get them with cash and thus contribute to the gem market in that way. But purchasing gems with gold right now is well beyond my means, and getting worse by the day. 2g today, I shudder to think what it will be a week before the holidays…. Bottom line is, they need a feasible cap on the inflation or they might as well remove the conversion feature from the game all together. GW1 did just fine without a conversion.
Supply/demand.
Less people are buying gems after Anet screwed over many players.
It is called inflation.

Or it could just be INFLATION.

I think it’s more likely that gems are in high demand because of the makeover kits, holidays and events.

This. Less people buying gems would actually cause the price to drop.
You can actually see it if you watch the prices around events, for example when the halloween event started and the gem store items were announced the price shot up, then it dropped a bit but remained high during the event and finally dropped to about where it was afterwards.
Right now it’s high partially because it’s been climbing steadily as people earn more money in game and partially because they recently added a bunch of popular items and probably because some people are stock-pilling gems ahead of the Wintersday event.
The price drops during off-peak times (although remember the gem store is game-wide, so off-peak for your time zone/server might still be a peak time for the game as a whole) and will probably drop significantly after Wintersday.
We all know what is ‘’supply & demand’’
I’m asking for a fixed price for extra storage/character inventory space.
Something else than with gems !
I mean, why I should pay 10x more than 2 month ago to increase my new character inventory space ? I have now to do more grinding …
I’m a casual gamer and I don’t have this extra time which was not required at the beginning.
… I have a friend who started to play the game 2 weeks ago. He do not have enough in-game currency for gems conversion. Have to use the mailing system, sending email to my account for ‘’extra storage’’ space. This is ridiculous.
The game is now harder (general items storage) for newcomer & casual player.
Edited Note : Makeover kit , pet or costume don’t affect the actual gameplay … Inventory space : YES !

I understand the inflation and the need for it, but there needs to be a feasible cap on it, otherwise things get wildly out of control pretty much the same direction it’s headed right now. It creates a huge gap between hardcore players with plenty of time on their hands and those that play casually, and in my experience of mmo’s over the past decade or so,that’s a really good way to breed resentment and unrest in the community as well as eventually cause people to leave the game. Just needs some more regulation is all, I’m not asking for handouts like some people.

Or you just buy 20 slot bags for multiple characters, that way you don’t have to buy gems… Really gems are OPTIONAL, if you don’t like the price just don’t buy them. It would be weird if prices didn’t go up since everyone gets more money over time, if you really want gems go farm stuff but STOP COMPLAINING (this is not only vs you but to all the whiners), it’s like the legendaries; everyone complains about the prices because they can’t get it all in a few hours of playtime.
i agree it is getting a tad silly. whereas in the past i just used my gold to buy w/e i need….now i have to think twice, like in the karka event i wanted to revive myself when our whole overflow wiped….it cost 5g+ just to convert the exact amount. i usually just end up buying the gems with my paypal now if i want something that badly…….now i like to think that im supporting anet but er…….i don’t have a bottomless pocket of money x.x

The price is fixed in real money. The exchange rate between real money and game money fluctuates.
Basically, I think ANet sees bank space and extra character slots as a luxury people will pay for.
I agree about the prices for gems I play alot…was lucky to play on the three day head start when the price for gems where at its lowest and I love my inventory space so I hurryed up and bought all my bankslots and toon slots ( on one toon) now I wish I would have done that on the rest of my toons wasnt expecting the prices to go up so fast for gems but thats my lose no one to blame thier =) but I do have a great way to get FREE storage space at no cost what so ever but TIME….
start a guild of your own and ask a friend to help to speed it up 10 influince is better than 2 per event and only spend your guild influince for the FREE 50 slot extra guild bank storage you can do this untill you hit the max cap for guilds…but keep one spot for your active guild….
you can return the favor and help your friend or friends get thier FREE 50 slot guild bank in return for thier help….
hope this helps on your storage problem using the mailing sytem is pointless once you get this up and going =)
It’s not inflation, because the prices of most normal items are stable (or bottomed at vendor price.) Only level 80 stuff is rising, due to more players reaching 80 and increasing demand.
Basically it’s supply and demand. The game launched with the gold->gem price at an arbitrary level, and since then it has been rising to find its “true” price.
The reason the “true” market price is so high, is because:
A. Most people would prefer not to spend RL money on gem items, so they spend gold instead. -> Gold supply in the Exchange goes up, Gem supply goes down, Gold->Gem price goes up.
B. The people who are supposed to balance out this effect are the ones who buy Gold with Gems. ie. Cash->Gems->Gold.
However, many people instead choose to buy gold from 3rd party sellers, so instead we get Cash->Gold. And if they choose to buy Gems with their botted gold, then it contributes to the effect in point A.
So basically the price of Gold->Gems will continue to rise until enough people decide to go Cash->Gems->Gold to balance out the people who are going Gold->Gems.
As the Gold->Gems price rises, buying gold through ANet will become more and more competitive with 3rd party sellers, until equilibrium is reached.
Of course, if enough people complain that the Gold->Gem price is too high and it makes buying Gem items basically impossible with ordinary gameplay, then ANet might be forced to intervene in the market.
One-time setting the Gold->Gem price down won’t work, because the pressures making it rise are still the same, so eventually it will still rise up to its “true price”.
ANet could ditch the free market altogether and implement a fixed ratio for Gold->Gems, however they basically lose all of the supposed benefits of the system, like how it’s meant to disincentivise 3rd party gold buying, since Cash->Gems->Gold will never be worthwhile.
A more practical intervention is to lower the Cash price of Gems, so that more people would be tempted to go Cash->Gems->Gold. (ie. reach the equilibrium point faster and at a lower price.)
To test the waters, I guess ANet could implement timed sales to see how demand changes with different Cash->Gem prices.
(ie. This weekend, you get 50% more gems per dollar! etc.)
If ANet finds that a lower cash price on gems brings more revenue, then they will lower it, and correspondingly the Gold→Gem price will be lower.
It could be speculation. We saw this with globs of ecto. It kept rising everyday up until 38s. Then the market crashed and it’s down to the correct market price.
Or it could be other, sinister reason..
No it is not. Check out some of the abyss dye or lodestones. It has went up and I made double profit. Also since ppl has way too much gold it will probably keep going up.
But I think gems will come down during holiday break cuz ppl tend to use them.
Gems will come down after the holiday event. Keep an eye on http://www.gw2spidy.com/gem and you’ll know when to buy.

agreed, it will drop at the end of the event for sure
Having said that, the rise in price has been caused by inflation due to botters – it took Anet way too long to shut them down (but they did a good job in the end), but it was too late – damage done and too many people love to buy gold from gold sellers = accelerated inflation
As usual, the honest players get screwed over… inflation + lower drop rates (to slow down new botters)
