RIP City of Heroes
Yet another Gem exchange rate spike.
RIP City of Heroes
There’s no telling. I find I frequently underestimate the amount of gold/money people are willing to spend on gambling.
I do wish I’d purchased more gems when they were still ~2g per 100. I’m afraid after this month that may be an exchange rate we never see again unless there’s a significant period of ‘rest’ before new items/sales for the prices to decrease.
It’s for the unlimited use pickaxes

Spending 18-22 gold for the same item you can get for free with 350 Karma.
Yeah, i think i’ll pass.
You can get an unlimited pickaxe that works on every ore for free with 350 karma?
Krall Peterson – Warrior
Piken Square
You can buy it unlimited amount of times.
So it is not the same then?
You still have to run back there every time it runs out of charges?
So it is actually not even remotely the same?

Or inventory space if you want to carry an extra stack…. Bought mine this morning and the lava spout is just a nice bonus to never having to go stock up on the diminishing variety.
but does your axe spout out lava?
Exactly

If you don’t want to spend 1 extra minute to travel around, can always buy tons of them and stock on an alt or two.
If you take into account travel costs of having to go there every time for another set of picks, that’s something. Plus NEVER having to haul around a couple stacks of picks is pure bonus to me. 30 bucks seem reasonable to hand off to each of my 3 main toons.
Definitely not everyone’s cup o’ tea, but from the looks of the gem market, it seems to be a big hit.
You guys are still going to be stuck with the regular Ori pickaxes, on your alts, unless you want to invest another 20-22 gold pr alt, since Molten pickaxes are Soulbound.
Money sink…
It cost me 0 gold. It did however cost me $10 real world money, and as I love this game $10 or even $30 for the set for development of the game is to me a bargain. Why does everyone here compare the in game gold as the cost of items is beyond me, if you want to support the game take a crowbar to your wallet or quit complaining at the “cost” of things.
Being account bound would be nice for the gem cost, but as I am not an alt-aholic I don’t much care.
I don’t know about anyone else, but personally, after the BLC molten ticket experience…I’m really turned off from spending any more $ for ANet.

I agree here actually. I won’t spend one stinking penny on a RNG lottery, but the picks (thankfully) were not just a random chance.

I agree as well, which is why i won’t be buying the dye packs either.
I don’t care about real money, that doesn’t affect the exchange rate.
And I carry one extra pick (actually whole set of gathering tools) around with me. I don’t think I would ever burn through two of them between seeing a vendor who could sell me a replacement in my travels. And since Orichalcum is so infrequent even if you are spending all your time in the high level zones that 9 out of 10 times a mithral pick is just fine and just switch over when you find an Orichalcum outcropping and then switch back.

Because when someone says they won’t or can’t spend real money on something, there’s always at least one other person that’s going to say “Well, you can just get it through the gold to gem conversion” That just cuts out that part for anyone looking to answer smart-butt like that.
I’m guessing you are in the US? The conversion from Euros to NOK ( I live in Norway ) doesn’t seem that crazy when spending a little money, but gets worse the higher the amount it is you wish to purchase. So that’s a real down side to that.
Also, even if I were using USD, I don’t even think that’s worth the price tag. A penny-pincher like me just doesn’t see the use in it.
I don’t see it as a convenience until they release the other 2 tools as well. still gotta go run back and buy sickles and axes. might as well buy picks while you’re there.

@Mairenaianelle.3849 Canadian actually, and my only point was that if you are actively playing the game you therefore must enjoy it so what is the harm in supporting it. Granted many people the world over would find the cost of such a luxury off putting, but if you want it then either spend major time farming or cough up. I prefer the latter just because I know I will never have to buy another mining pick until they release a higher tier material.
@Mystic.5934 The store sale does say exclusive so it may only be for a very short time, I prefer to not take the chance the other two are not released anytime soon.
I know this much, when I have to do a gathering daily I will seek out the metals over the logs now. If I am in say Gendarrian Fields killing 40 critters, I definably won’t what to burn my ori axes.

Well it’s a limited time item.
When they release the other two tools you will regret not buying this pick

Pretty much this, if i was a betting man, knowing how the gem marked exploded immediately after this was released, i’d say it’s a sure bet we’ll be seeing more of these in the future.

Just to put this out there, I’m not knocking you or anyone else that buys it. I was just telling my opinion on it. I can see where that would be a good and bad thing getting it but for my money right now, I’d rather buy more character slots ( I’m an alt hopper and role player ) for my money’s worth right now. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on luxury items ( anything in cash shops in any game I play ) right now so I’m going for whatever I can get the most out of currently.
The perma-axe is most certainly a better buy if it was just between that and the new dye packs of randomness, though. But I wish the perma-axe was half that price being an online purchase for an in-game item.
As it is, I have two cats that really need the extra money I currently have with some health problems that have popped up. My lifetime cuddle partners are the front of my thoughts before in-game luxury items. :P ^^
^ I truly hope your cats get well soon. And thanks for keeping it civil.
Absolutely. I don’t want to fight so if it sounds like I may be trying to, I hope someone points it out. I like keeping things civil. xD

Having to run to a vendor is only one aspect of it. For me it would also save 2 inventory spaces since I no longer need to dedicate a spot for the ori pick and a spare mithril. For other people this could be saving 6 or 7 inventory slots. The other part of that is never having to check if you have to right pick.
I don’t like the pick or any other gem store only item. The reoccurring releases only raise the ratio. This serves to make gold>gem less attractive and rl cash>gem more attractive. It seems to me that with each new release they are seeing how much they can get away with.
Take an inch…we will get used to it. Take another inch…we will get used to it. Take another so forth and so on until next thing we know we are far past inches into the realm of yards. The distance from were we started to where we will be staggering.
Imo the same practice applies all over the game. It’s hard not to think back to arguments over gw1 and see that some were right about direction. In the long run it’s obvious, but in the short term players are blinded by numerous ideologies.
I posted in another thread the pickax removes a gold sink. Be it a small one, it is still troubling that a gem store item would remove a gold sink, potentially causing inflation, therefore push more people to buy gems to convert to gold to buy items in the TP.
Maybe not this particular item, but the ideology behind it is disturbing.

It’s both a cosmetic and a convenience item, which is exactly the sort of thing that ANet said the gem store would offer, so I’m not really sure what problem you have with it.
You seem to be arguing that the gem store should never have anything desirable in it that can’t be obtained in-game (unless I’m misinterpreting your statements), which would largely defeat the purpose of gems in the first place.
The pickaxe may remove a gold sink, but people have worked out the maths and you’d basically need to be playing GW2 regularly for YEARS in order for the Molten Alliance pick to pay off for itself. Besides, that’s not taking into account the people who converted gold to gems to buy the picks, taking the tax hit along the way. A mass surge of people converting gold to gems sucks a fair bit of money out of the economy.
As for me, I bought 5 pickaxes for my characters, as the sheer convenience of never having to worry about mining picks again trumped everything else. I was even considering buying a 6th pick in reserve for potential future characters, but I think the odds of the pick (or something similar) returning in the future are probably pretty good if it turns out to be a hot item (and if the current spike in gold-gem prices is anything to go by, it most likely is).
I spent 20 kitten golds to convert the requested gems and STILL i don’t even see the SHADOW of this bloody pick.
I PRETEND TO HAVE IT OR TO GET MY MONEY BACK. I ALREADY SENT A REPORT AND I’M GETTING SICK AND TIRED OF THIS.

This is hardly a material goldsink. It’s only 4s.

Is your mailbox full? Gemstore items are sent to your inbox for you to collect, and if you have too many messages (10+), it won’t show up until you delete a few. Sorry if this isn’t the issue, and I hope that support can resolve for you quickly.
Isn’t it wonderful? 100 gems are finally above 2gp sell price, for me the breakpoint to make selling gems for gold worth it. Gems have been undervalued since launch.
I hope this current level sticks.

I think the price of gems (in gold) will slowly rise over time. It tends to spike whenever new items come out in the Gem Store, but it never really settles back down to the old price. (Probably because of players like me who just pull out the credit card when there’s something we REALLY want from the gem store and buy it outright, while other players gobble up an ever-decreasing supply of gems in the currency exchange.)

Seriously? You are going to state this as some sort of argument?
You used RL money instead of gold. It’s the same thing! It’s all the same!! We may not have the real money to spend like you. So our in game currency is different somehow?
You reply makes my brain bleed

Your currency is based on the value we place on the gems we convert to gold. If you didn’t realize it, someone paid cash for the gems you bought with gold. The argument is entirely valid.
I wouldn’t convert gems to gold for less than 2gp/100gems. Just recently did converting cash to gold become worth the time it takes for me to “farm” money in the real world. Working 1 extra hour in the real world now nets me almost 100gp in Guild Wars 2. That’s acceptable.
The gem/gold market is dictated by the people who buy gems for cash.

Not to mention it’s not the same thing at all. Gold to gems prices change, the cash to gem conversion always stays the same. When i refer to what’s available at the store, i ALWAYS use it compared to real world currency, not gold costs. Buying stuff from the store with gold is a convenience and one that players are actually finally paying a steep premium on.
