I would just like to discuss this NEW item in the gem store right now.

If you don’t know it gives you a Red color dye of your choice except for exclusive dyes.

So I was wondering what is the point of this? You pay 250 gems or around 30 gold for something that you could buy for a couple silvers to a gold?

I was very happy with the recent items like bubble head, water guns are all great ideas but this is one is really a low blow. Whoever though of this…. please value your customers!!

Probably a long, long, long-term item which might make sense when supplies of UNID dyes finally run out and prices for both crafting and UNIDs get high enough.

…or an item for people who totally don’t use TP and think that using gemstore is the only way to customize your character. Plus, if it lets you preview the dye (don’t know if it does), than it’s a convenience item which lets you see (almost) all shades of X colour without using third-party sites and typing in dye names.

Previewing all dyes of 1 specific shade is a good point, I did not think of that.

Well, at this price it does, and is worse than upgrade extractor which is kinda worth it for agony infusions. The argument of “do not compare with gold, compare with dollars” doesn’t really help this item either.

On the other hand, as long as this item is not forced upon us, I take the philosophical approach and think that I’m fine with it as long as ANet gets funded but not by me. China IIRC has to pay to unlock dyes and this item may be far more useful for them – though I see no actual reason to put the item on our market then if it is the case as already gemstore is different in these two markets and can be differentiated further.

I see Blood Dye has taken a dive as supply suddenly ticked up. I think it’s the most expensive red dye that’s not part of a special gem dye set. Dropped from 2.5g to 1.9g.

I got the original sets of dyes for less gold than what that costs. I mean literally all fine, masterwork and rare dyes for less gold than what you can get now with 250 gems.

Either the item can produce up to 5-6 dyes (up to 20 if different ones, you know, like with checkboxes to choose 20 different, then click accept to get them), or its price simply does not make sense.

One could say that this may for a long term thing, for when the dyes are less abundant. But then they could just increase its price or over time instead keeping at 250 gems, or sell it now as stack of 5 and decrease the stack over time.

I can’t help but think that whoever was in charge of setting these gemstore prices either doesn’t bother checking the game itself (things like how much coin people make and how expensive things are in the trading post) or that they expect people to be dumb enough to fall for that.

In one case players and the reality of the game are being ignored, and in the other case their intelligence is insulted.

Needless to say, neither case is good and both are insulting, aggravating and disrespectful towards players, even if some don’t see it.

If this was some sort of joke. I am afraid I fail to understand it, and I will certainly not enjoy see it repeating. This is in no way the kind of joke that becomes funny after repeating it enough times.

Still makes zero sense. You can get 23g by converting gems to gold at the moment already, buy all red dyes, and have leftovers.

Reminds me of a topic where a player was angry that he had spent a lot of money on upgrade extractors to test different builds, and when I said that he would’ve had saved tons of money by converting these gems to gold straight away and then buying runes/sigils, he responded with something along “I don’t need gold, I got gems”.

At that point, I decided that such items should definitely exist for a simple reason of punishing ignorance and funding the game at the same time.

I seriously don’t understand anet’s logic in thinking that we would want to spend 30 gold on ONE red hue dye, when you could buy a whole ton of them on the trading post?

I mean, did they go back to caveman days or something? I may not be that great at math, but I know a stupid deal when I see one.

Why offer such weird gem store sales?

Here’s an idea. Offer Kasmeer’s Bikini Skin and Lord Faren’s Underwear skin in the gemstore. There, that is a GOOD idea, and that didn’t even require any brain cells on my end.

The problem is that people really are that dumb. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of people buying these things right now.

On a side note, red dyes are going to take a dive due to the rescue package which IS worth it if you like opening black lion chests.

You still loot them from mobs, but you have to buy a gemstore item to identify the dye (RNGs the dye), and THEN the dye is account bound after that. If you’re looking for a specific red dye, you have to RNG a ton of gems (or gold converted to gems) to get it. Being able to spend 250 gems and get exactly what you want is incredible when you consider that.

The only reason it’s available in the NA/EU servers is consistency I imagine.

We’re not forgetting them, we’re just wondering that if they have separate gemstore items already (dye identifier, gem subscription programs, teleport to friend), having only this item for NA/EU doesn’t look consistent, and is rather a convenience “pay if you’re too lazy to google colors and buy from TP” item, or a “well we coded it for China anyways, so let’s just put it for NA/EU as well”.

They likely looked at the item and figured:

• It was a hedge against prices rising in the future for dyes (this creates a constant dollar value for any red dye)
• Some people might find it convenient, so why not add it?
• This way they don’t have to create two different special release packs for NA/EU and CN

I got the Zephyr pack in the gem store last night (because just the 15 keys alone for 1000gems was great) and I ended up with one of these items.

It’s sitting in my bank because I have all of the non event dyes unlocked.

I didn’t realize that some red dyes were worth up to 2+ gold.

I completely support Anet and their gem store; they need income to continue developing the game. But I love to hate their blatant gem store scams. If I was rich I would buy the swimming booster, the lawless helm, the basic ore node pack, and now this item and make my own personal gem store scam museum.

Even if the identified red dyes were all gone from the market, you could still get unidentified red dyes (currently 70s for a high buy order). There are currently 55 red dyes total, so you could order 40 UI red dyes for the cost of one dye(color swatch) you get to pick. Seems legit.

I like a good conspiracy to make me smile so, let me give you my take on the ‘logic’ with the Gem price of this item…make an item for the Gemstore, make the price of the item kind of ridiculous, then BUNDLE the item with some other overpriced, worthless junk to make people believe they are “getting a REALLY GREAT DEAL!!!! Whoot!!!” a and there you have it, people shell out 1000 Gems left and right. Anet wins. GG.

The swatch item is beyond stupid. I really want to see arenanet try and explain how a single, normal red dye is worth that many gems.

Especially when converting that many gems to gold buys you….every single one of the normal red dyes.

Personally I see this as a mean action, having newbies spend gold/gems because they don’t know better.

I could just buy the other dyes for less on the MP. If it had exclusives, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

They should release ones for white and black. Just imagine the chaos. Well probably not as much with the conversion rate.

It really wouldn’t suprise me anymore, who know what Anet will do next?

It’s funny how they stopped us from getting unid dyes as drops, and now this new item emerges in the gem store. Just another way for Anet to squeeze out more profits.

That reminds me of another case: a player with 10k+ AP, world completion and a legendary who asked “What’s a sharpening stone?” during Crown Pavilion.

Moral: being new has nothing to do with being unable/uneager to search for information. And if you’re spending real money on a game to which you’re completely new without doing any research, then, well… you are paying for convenience and are punished for laziness.

yes this is by far really the most useless gemshop item so far

the player can only lose money in every case

there is abosultely no chance of winning something even if you get the most expensive rare red dye….
