What the heck is going on with this? Last I looked, at most a month ago probably less, it was 12 or so copper each and it is over 40 now. Is there something new I missed?

Over the last month during the last LW event a lot of players hung out at the QP the first two weeks farming chests or doing the arena, doing the invasion every hour the next two weeks hunting champs or running around in the open world in zergs farming champs. What they weren’t doing is gathering low level mats.

Then there was the announcement about the crafting changes the Friday before the patch which caused a run on all basic mats. There was over one million copper ore a month ago, 200K before the crafting announcement, as low as 120K during the US labor day holiday and now the previous LW content is over the supply has recovered to still less than half of the amount before the Queen’s Jubilee.

I would guess lots of people leveling the weapon making properties to craft an ascended.

Copper (and green wood) is by the way the only material NOT used in crafting an ascended.

Hmm ok lol. I got worried with the insider trading post from earlier this week :P- has my thoughts going all conspiracy theory lol.. I thought maybe I should stock up for some reason yet to be see :P

LOL that is exactly what got me! Yeah I bought a couple stacks when I posted this because it seems odd.. but you know I could be wrong but I can just use the ore to craft level a few alts for a few levels lol.

But the item description says refined from silver, gold platinum.

I’d guess that the high price of iron needed for the deldrimor steel ingots exerted some upward pull on copper, since you can upgrade copper —> iron in the forge with decent results.

Iron ore is currently 1s25c
in the MF, you can do this:
250 copper ore + 1 iron ore + 5 pile of shimmering dust + 1 philosopher’s stone = 40-150 iron ore (let’s say 95 on average)
working backwards, you get 1g18s75c out of it, minus 2s75c for dust, minus 1s25c for iron ore, you end up getting 46c per copper ore invested. So if you can get copper ore for cheaper than 46c, you’re making a profit (or at least getting iron ore cheaper)
similar for green wood logs.
also, there aren’t as many people farming T1 materials as there used to be.
unfortunately, I didn’t realize this was possible until it wasn’t profitable anymore :P

I speculate that it will be required for ascended jewelcrafting. Others may speculate that as well and be gobbling it up in hopes of finding another Ancient Wood profit machine.

I would be surprised if ascended jewelcrafting uses copper as other T1 mats are not used in the current ascended crafting. I’d speculate it’s because of the rise in iron pricing and the MF recipe.

I personally doubt that Ascended jewelcrafting will need Copper Ore too. Not only does the description for Xunlai Electrum Ingots state it needs “Silver, Gold, Platinum and Mithrillium”, but I think ANet wants to avoid a situation where the value of T1 mats is pushed above the earning capability of new players, since Copper is required not only for Jewelry, but also for a large number of other crafting disciplines in the form of Bronze Ingots.

New players cannot afford to buy their crafting mats anyway, so that point is moot. In fact, the high pricing on T1 mats only helps new players because they can make their first gold by just harvesting and selling on the TP.

Well, replace “new players” with “new’ish players” then. Sure, a level 2 character fresh out of the prologue isn’t going to be able to buy anything, but a level 20 character should be able to buy, say, 5 – 10 Green Wood Logs/Copper Ore to supplement what she’s gathered for T1 crafting after exploring a 1-17 map.

newish players can not find and buy enough crafting materials to keep even one of their chosen crafts in pace with their level. income is just too low below level 80.
gw2crafts.net has this to say:
weaponsmith level 0-75 costs 1.5g and will make you at highest a level 25 Iron weapon
75 to 150 will cost 8g and at the end you can make at highest a level 40 Steel weapon
that’s a total of 9.5g before level 40. I would like to shake the hand of the person that could make that happen.
crafting is for alts and level 80’s.

That’s for rapid leveling of you crafting skill, focusing on discovery and items that may not sell but will grant you maximum craft xp. Iron is readily available in the level 15-25 zones, away from the level 1-15 zone gate. Go out of your way to farm that every night.

It only costs if you aren’t gathering your own mats.

I don’t remember being able to buy much for mats on my first characters either though. That is just the way it is for everyone I think.
