after several months of playing GW2 I am ready to buy my precursor, dusk. I have been following its price at the TP and I don’t understand why somebody always outbids the highest buyer by a lot of gold plus 3s 97c. If I want to buy dusk I would put a price that outbids the highest buyer just by a minimal amount. The “397 guy” always rises its price by 20 or 50 gold plus its 397 signature. Can somebody please explain me this behavior?

If I want my item desperately I will outbid you by however much I think is the right price for Dusk.

If the current buy order is 500g and I think it’s not worth that but 530g, and I want the item now, then I will put it up at 515g and then so on. I don’t have time to constantly check buy orders and quible around. I’m going to outbid you to the point that you just stop updating your bids.

3s 97c is just the default bid price for Dawn. Anyone who wants to bid several hundred gold, but doesn’t bother to alter the silver and copper column, will place a bid that ends in 3s 97c.

I’ll assume that 3s97c is the default ‘minimum buy offer’ value that the game automatically puts into those fields when you submit a custom offer. Buyers just punch in the gold field and don’t bother zeroing out the others.

They’re outbidding the existing ‘highest buy offer’ by 20, 50 gold because they want their buy order filled. There are always a lot of lowball offers floating around on big ticket items hoping to get filled; who knows how often people actually sell into them? Outbidding those offers by 50 gold is an attempt to get your offer filled quickly, and it usually works.

people are just lazy and 4s doesn’t matter when you’re talking about >500 gold.
sometimes the time it takes to change that to 0’s is time they could spend making more profit than that elsewhere.

Simple lack of knowledge of the default =/= conspiracy.

I don’t think that matters. I tested that with a cheap item a while back. I am pretty sure the game won’t let you sell for less than the highest buy offer so even if someone DID try to sell Dusk for 3s 97c it won’t go to you for that amount unless nobody wants Dusk anymore.
