[merged] Mini Mr. Sparkles
How did you not expect that the mini would be available at PAX, and plan accordingly? Do you collect anything in real life? How badly do you want it?
There are a wide variety of ways by which minis have been released. The harder it is to gain a complete set, the more exclusive that set is.
I had a similar rage about minis, sometime shortly after Balthazar. (I was a big collector on GW1 and still have a very nice set in pre searing) instead of quitting, I sold most of them off, bought materials for my first legendary, and live happy to own the ones I may want to use.
The account bound nature kills me most, but I see why it is a good idea.
I planned ahead and own a Mr. Sparkles now, which did not cost me $700!
I don’t understand. How did you plan ahead?
She probably heard that Mr Sparkles was available at Gamescon, speculated that it would also be available at PAX, and then either made sure to get to the booth on that day, or arranged a friend to pick one up for her.
I salute her dedication in getting Mr Sparkles, although I still think that he should be put up for sale on the Gem Store. (Maybe not right away, as I’m fine with the con-go’ers having some time to enjoy their exclusivity, but maybe he can show up 3 – 6 months down the line.)
Even if I knew someone going to PAX, which I didn’t. It’s unlikely they would have given me theirs. I’d say you were either fortunate to go to PAX or have a friend that went and didn’t care to keep the mini themselves. Not sure I would call that “planning ahead” if that Is what happened.
edit: I realize this sounds like a boo hoo I don’t have the mini. But I found that post to have a… rude or elitist attitude to it. Perhaps those are the wrong words.
What I hate is it’s a mini I would actually use.. and there’s not a whole lot of those. The other golems are kinda meh.

I was at PAX. I went to the GW2 with my bf and some friends who none of them plays GW2, but got the minis so that I can give them to the friends I play with everyday.
So yeah, people like me who doesn’t mind getting stuff like that for friends if I’m already going to be there does exist
I apologize Helenorz; I gave you the wrong impression in my post. I didn’t say they don’t exist. I do not know anyone who would go to PAX and not want one for themselves.
I said “I’d say you were either fortunate to go to PAX or have a friend that went and didn’t care to keep the mini themselves.”
So I said they were fortunate. Which Is what I would call any person who has a friend willing to grab them anything from a convention or has friends that go to conventions.

I want a friend like you.
I am not a die hard mini collector, I just collect the ones I enjoy or look cool. But I can understand the problem many are coming with that are upset in that regard.
However, for the ones that are scoffing this off as a trivial manner, look at it from a different view. This potentially could affect all sorts of collectors or users in the future. Sure, for now its just a shirt and mini pet. Later?
Why not an exclusive weapon skin?
Why not an exclusive personal instance?
Why not an exclusive stat combo?
Why not an exclusive skill?
Why not an exclusive title?
The list could go on. But it works just the same. also, before the argument comes up, it doesn’t matter if its game changing or not. Most games never cared. Why should they now? Look at it from that perspective in the future and realize how bad this method is when you separate more and more of the populace without them having any sort of control over it.
It’s not fair and it’s not right. Not for the community we have built for the game. If it becomes more so like this, it will cause quite a number of sour perspectives that will not plant a good seed in the community.
I think it’s important to note that the event ArenaNet held for Guild Wars 2 did not require admission to PAX. They simply held it at the same time at a relatively nearby location. Honestly, I preferred the ANet event over the majority of PAX. Staff came outside to meet and greet people waiting in line due to occupancy capacity and even did trivia and random giveaways! The line wait was relatively short and once inside, everything was organized and clean. There was never a real dull moment. I even got to meet and mingle with handful of players and guildmates at the event!
I can’t say the same about PAX – I, among with plenty of others, waited for hours to demo games and get shirts three times larger than what we wear. The booths that did have promising ‘swag’ had even longer lines. Some people I spoke with waited 4+ hours to get the chance at some giveaways. -__-
Regardless, great job to those that organized the event during the PAX weekend – I hope more events like this are to come in the future.
(And maybe a better organized tourney with semi-finals @ the event next time? That was the only lackluster part of the evening imo)
Maybe they should hide the boxes of the mini-pets that are extremely rare like this one. That way it at least looks like you have your collection complete.

First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the socialists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.
kojast: I don’t really understand your post. I didn’t say Anet was abusing me. I don’t feel abused. I feel slightly irritated that I can not get said Mini by any other means than ebay or going to a convention. This would not be the only mini I do not own in the game. I was unable to defeat their RNG winterdays mini’s and am missing one from there as well. I was unhappy I wasn’t able to get one. I would love a response from Anet on the matter, although I doubt we are going to see one anytime soon at this point.
Sorry for the late response, KOPPER—was out of town—but the “abuse” term specifically was in response to an earlier post claiming ANet was abusing mini collectors. It was not directed at you.
My basic message is this: you are a customer. One of many. The fact that ANet isn’t responding means your needs aren’t high enough on their priorities to be addressed. They’re not out to get you, but other things are more important.
As a customer, you made a good faith effort to explain what you wanted. Your request was simple, does not hurt any other player, does not affect the economy, and increases gem store sales by adding another product to it. ANet ignored you. There’s nothing more you can do to get what you want.
In short, mini collection isn’t viable in this game. Even if they release Mr. Sparkles, what’s to stop this from happening again? Logical conclusion: stop collecting minis. It’s not your fault. ANet was the one who decided exclusivity is more valuable than the cash of dedicated collectors. So be it.

Sad but true Kojast. Wish this wasn’t so. I love mini’s in almost all other MMOs. Did like SWTORS for whatever reason.
problem: a mini was only for attendants of game shows.
solution: have a contest in game magazines like they did for guild wars mini’s.
result: still a way to get it without losing it’s rarity.
Several still for sale on Ebay as of Sept. 17, 2013.

At least price isn’t as bad anymore. Not that it makes it okay.
At least Anet is giving something to there biggest fans when they go to these events.
Being able to afford a trip to PAX, Gamescon or any convention doesn’t make those people their biggest fans. There was another thread (maybe this one, I can’t remember now) where one person says they got a group of friends to get extra’s who have no interest in GW2.

it’s almost on the other side of the world for me, i bit to expensive for a digital miniature version of a robot to go there.
Did anyone check out the Mini Risen Hylek yet? From this point, every time Anet releases a minipet, with no known acquisition methods.. Well from here on I expect the worst of them.
Mini Risen Hylek drops from Tequatl chest.
Hahaha I’m sooooo happy I never started collecting them.
I’m sure they will be tradeable, as the special ones were in gw1, and I’m sure, just like in gw1 they will have ludicrous prices.
Start grinding money, you’ll be able to afford Mr.Sparkles somewhere around 2019.

Thanks, Wiki didn’t have that yet.
And back to Mr. Sparkles. :i

Fair enough. I misinterpreted your post. My apologies.
Well, if anyone still want this thing, you’re going to want to pay up soon. There’s only a few left on eBay. Since Anet does not seem to want to answer to either this thread or the one under Guild Wars 2 Discussion, I expect nothing from them.
I never used ebay in my life, so I am certainly not signing up there to get a black market Mr. Sparkles, even if I could afford it.
At least Anet is giving something to there biggest fans when they go to these events.
Agreed to that but not everyone can afford or make time to go to events like these and that means people at home are not any less of a big fan.
Sounds like an easy way to get scammed.

Um, I’m going with “spends hundreds of dollars on airfare and hotel just to see a sales pitch and get some swag” qualifies you for being a bigger fan almost by definition.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”
- Jareth, King of Goblins.
It’s true that some people can’t travel just for that, guess best way is to remove it from collectible tab, but i guess that will never happen…
What about putting it into the 10k or 15k achievement point chest?
10k or 15k achievement is just insane, maybe remove the account bound so people will be able to sell it on TP…
no 10k or 15k is not insane. look at the leaderboards how many already have that much and its getting more every day.
I have around 10.600 achievement points. I do like to do achievements, but dailies/monthlies do not concern me. I did not strive for the leaderboard, but doing a lot of achievements resulted in me now being ~top 200 on my server.
If they do that than 1000’s of people will be getting it which doesn’t really make it that rare, maybe add it as a drop with a low chance like precursor i dkno but achievements is not a solution tbh.
ArenaNet is not shy about giving away ultra-exclusive minis. My friend got a MKG from winning honorable mention in a GW1 art contest. There were very few released and I think things like this are good. Expect more in the future.

And what makes you ‘think’ that?
Because it was done all through GW1
Well, if there’s one thing we’ve learned so far in GW2, it’s to never use GW1 as an expectation of how things will work in GW2.
Because it was done all through GW1
That’s.. Not really a reason. I think I was unclear. Why do you think it’s a good thing to release exclusive minipets that you can’t obtain in-game? If it’s because they did it in GW1 too, I’m not too thrilled with the argument.
in GW1 you had at least some alternative, a magazine contest or a give away from a known MMO website.
GW2 is more about exclusivity and less about obtaining what you collect, money speaks in this regard.
It’s definetly not like GW1, Anet will probably handout Mr Sparkle at every single event they make…
I am not a mini collector but I am just wondering why do people even collect these minipets, getting a legendary is a bigger achievement than minipets? So why not go for legendary over minipets

That’s subjective. I have no legendary. I have minipets enough that they would buy me a legendary. I just love to collect. It’s just like collecting in real life, you get nothing from doing it, but if a nice framework has been created to collect something, it can be fun, trying to collect that collection. We just didn’t care much for the latest addition to that framework

Some people do both (like me) :p
I got Juggernaut and only need 2 gifts of exploration to build eternity. I also own almost all the minis (Dolyak, Tequatl and Bloody Prince missing atm).

Given how many Legendaries I see in Lion’s Arch everyday, I think somebody who’s collected all the minipets is a bigger achiever than someone with a Legendary.

Problem is there is no way to show that you have all or most minis. I think there are 160+ miniatures currently, so you cant take them out of the bank all at once even with all 20 slot bags.

a mini pet simply takes time and effort, a legendary is IMO a waste of time for a skin that’s gonna annoy the heck out of me.
