unidentified dye experiment
Once you’ve them all opened, you should also dump the junk ones in the Mystic Forge in the hopes of getting an improvement.
I also just thought, with GW2Spidy api export, you should actually be able to calculate the average value of a single unidentified dye by adding up the total value on TP of all the available dyes, and then averaging the result by the number of dyes available.

Yeah I did that and got a few that were worth putting on the TP but for the most part all the forge did was clean my inventory for the next opening session.
made my money back + some profit also and only bought 40…i suggest spam clicking also. (dont know if it works..but it cant hurt anything)
Is there video of the claimed phenomenon where you get more rares if you click faster? If not, I’d suspect this is mostly an attempt to drive unidentified dye prices up.
lol one person on the forums isnt gonna drive prices up…..
Whether it will actually work or not is irrelevant. There have been a number of threads started here (and on reddit and elsewhere) extolling the profit-making virtues of some item or other, and many of them are pretty transparent attempts to increase demand (and thus price) for that item.
Such nonsense. If this were the case, people with G15 keyboards and the like would be swimming in gold because you can just bind your mouseclick to a macro and you’d open 250 of them in a few seconds without pressing more than once.
Pretty obvious pump and dump attempt.
Clicking faster doesn’t make you get more rare dyes. It’s the fact that you are opening more dyes that’s giving you more rares. Logic….
Lol, clicking faster for more rares. Lol.
Its completely random.
I usually buy 10 every so often and hope i get lucky, usually get a midnight red or celestial dye and make 1 or 2 gold on top of what i spent most of the time.
Like I said believe it or not I care not. I did an experiment and I was just posting some findings. I know enough about the fluctuation of dye prices to know when to buy and when to sell and make a profit, but this takes time, sometimes even close to a week to get the timing right. I was looking for a quick alternative and found that it worked more than it didnt. And just for the record, at any given time I have around 4k dyes on the TP and 3k in my inventory just waiting to be sold. If I wanted to dirve the prices of dye, I wouldnt try to do it here.
I tried opening 45 dyes and got 2 Abyss dyes. Woot!
Luck is luck. I’ve opened over 100 and the only good dye I got was the Redemption dye.
oh, yeh sure, he knows when to buy and sell em lol.
They have been on a steady decline for ages.
They are used in gift crafting and the interest is now low as the items suck.
Look at any of the graph sites and you will see there is no money in flipping these.
Random is random
I’ve done this experiment in the past, threw a few gold at the question, and didn’t turn up anything worth more than 20 silver.
It’s very much blind luck/gambling, I for one will be sticking to more reliable income sources

It doesnt matter if something is in a decline as long as you can sell it for more than 115% of what you paid for it. Buying a dye at 3.10 and selling it for over 3.75 is a profit my friend. And if youre doing in the thousands, you do the math Einstien. But oh yeah, I dont know what Im talking about.
Thanks for the tip.
Whether this is a pump and dump, I don’t care. I gave it a shot, what could it hurt??
First attempt, I bought 40 of the (50 was too much) and I not only got my money back, but I got a white, a celestial and a black, all on my first go.
I went from 3g to 8g.
And now I can’t stop. Prices are reasonable, and I stop if they go over 3s25c.
So far, I am up to 15g.
rushes back to the market
As with all things on the trading post, no strategy with any particular item is ALWAYS profitable, but depends on what everything is selling for at the time.
This is no different than buying lots of bags with the intent of opening them all and selling the contents for a profit. Sometimes the bag prices dip low enough while the contents inside the bags happen to be up a little when you sell them, making it profitable etc.

Look at the raw price data and it tells a different story. While the daily (and longer-term) average has been falling, there are shorter-term fluctuations that could still be used for a reliable profit, if you’re good at predicting them.
I just did this,i bought 40 (1g44s) and this is definitely a “pump and Dump”
Lucky that i got Midnight Ice in the last 3 that i sold for 1g60s,but don’t try
(edited by Martoz.8675)
sorry Martoz that you had such a dissimilar experience.
I keep myself strictly less than 1g per try.
I open them up.
I look for:
White, celestial, gold, black and Abyss.
Go to the forge and combine teh blues into greens (if you get lucky) and greens into rares.
It’s not a sound strat, but I did get a white dye that way..
So Martoz, what youre saying is that you spent 1g44s and sold a dye you got out of 40 for 1g60s? And have 39 dyes that you could either use for your toon, put in the forge or sell for copper and silver? You just proved my point, and you did it with way less that I did. I never said you could get rich. Yeah youre going to lose gold here and there, but I have found that I come out on top more than I lose. Everyones luck will be diff.
And on a side note, how many dyes that sell for over a gold do you think Ill get if I open 4000 dyes at 3s10c? Im sure it would be enough to cover what I spent along with fully dye out all my characters and still have dyes to put in the forge.
Unidentified Dyes are probably the riskyist way to make money.
I started with 2 gold, I bought 50 silver worth of unidentified dyes. I ended up getting 1 midnight red dye which I sold for 1 gold, 50 silver, and a couple other dyes which I sold for about 10-20 silvers each.
I then took the investment I had (4 gold) and bought a bunch more dye. I didn’t receive many rares aside from a few grey shades (silver, mithril etc).
You can make a lot of money, but you can also lose a lot of money.
I tried this too. Bought 250 for 9g~ and started clicking.
At first I opened 175, then my inventory got full. Got 1 Black and 1 White worth more than 1g, and a bunch of 10s ones, but mostly unworthy commons.
I was regretting spending gold with this.
Then I went to my bank, deposited everything I could, and started clicking again. Clicked another 50 before my inv. got full again, and this time I got both an Abyss and Celestial, which paid for my whole investment.
But I really felt the luck playing it’s part… if it weren’t for these two, I’d be in the red now.
Now, at best, I made a 3g~ profit with rares, everything else I’ll just Mystic Forge for another shot.
Try at your own risk.
I concur with the clicking faster will net you more rares, something to do with the random seed.
