As of the time of posting this, a bowl of this stuff is selling for almost 24 silver. Who is buying this, like…at all? Let alone for this price? I’ve always thought people used food that helped them avoid being downed, not food that helped them while downed. Am I missing something here?

The answer lies in the individual prices of the chilies used to make it.

Yah. Right now chili peppers are 15 silver each. Cayenne and Ghost peppers are 6 silver each. That’s 21 silver right there.

Chili peppers are harvested from the Charr areas and their nodes share a harvest with other items. This means there isn’t a dependable way to farm them except by finding a lot of herbs in those areas.

Idunno, I’m with OP here. Crafting materials are one thing, but as far as consumables go, how desirable the function is should dictate the price. I’m not saying no one would necessarily want while-downed buffs. Just that if no one wants it, then no one is going to pay 24 silver for it, regardless of how expensive the ingredients are. I’m guessing the listings don’t accurately reflect activity. If you’ll notice, the highest buy order is around 11.2 silver, a considerably lower price. That’s a better, but still not perfect, reflection of what players are willing to pay for it.

On July 12 there was a jump in price. Previous to that it had been below 18 silver. It then briefly spiked to 24.54 silver, went down, then a few hours later went back up to 24.54 silver. It has stayed in that range since then. One assumes there is demand driving this higher price since it’s selling.

Whoa, when did that happen? It’s mighty tempting to sell the stack sitting in my bank for a quick 40 gold. I remember when dill prices were ~18 silver, but they’ve fallen off and chili peppers have jumped. I can’t imagine it’s simply a case of “hard to find” as rosemary is in a similar situation yet significantly cheaper.

Chili Peppers are used in a wide variety of cooking dishes (from the typical “chili” dishes, to more exotic ingredients like Stir-fry or Spicy Cookies). Trouble is, they only drop in 1’s or 2’s, and only from Herb nodes in Ascalon that also share drop tables with Peppercorns and Garlic. (Along with additional herbs in higher level areas.)

All that results in a high demand for Chili Peppers, but a limited way to provide supply.

I do think it’s silly that Chili Peppers are that expensive, by the way. I think ANET needs to do to them what they did for Vanilla Beans; increase their prevalence in the loot table, and up the amount to 3 – 5.

Back at the beginning of the game, chili pepper was sold by a karma vendor. They removed this back in September 2012. They added them to the herb table in the Charr area but did not truly adjust the drop rate from harvesting even though the recipes are based on an easy to acquire karma item. I remember a number of posts back then asking that the rate be increased. It never was. The predictable result, they are now high priced.
