Hi everyone,

I’m trying to find the ash legion armor set for my Charr thief. However, the only thing I have found is a tailoring set Vasher Shadowsinner (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Vasher_Shadowsinner) sells. But unfortunately this is light armor.

Does anyone know if this skin exists as medium armor?

As the self-proclaimed resident expert on Ash Legion uniforms, I’ll go ahead and list out the full set:

Dyes:

• For all the dark blacks: Abyss
• For all the silvers: Graphite
• Certain accent colors: Ebony, and other colors seen (such as lavenders and golds in the cases of special NPCs and sentinels)

In many cases, you can get away with using Black dye in place of Abyss, even though it isn’t technically correct. Sometimes you have to go with what’s in your budget The cases of special colors used can be found with certain NPCs. I’ve seen 2 separate female Ash Legionnaires wearing a muted “lavender” color for the sleeves on the coat (I’ve not taken the time to determine the dye used). Sentinels have the main and secondary panels on just their gloves colored gold (also haven’t taken the time to figure out the exact dye). As such, I take this as a “go ahead” within the lore that sometimes the uniform is slightly customized to the wearer when warranted.

Light Armor set:

• T1 & 2 cultural. Most commonly T1.
• Also the same look as the “Ash Legion” crafted (tailor/light armor) set of karma recipes.
• T1 is generally the official Ash Legion light uniform. Seen on “Ash Legion Spy”, “Ash Legion Captain”, and other various NPCs.

Medium:

• Level 40 crafted armor.
• Leatherworker 150+ and in the “Coarse Leather” tier. Sometimes the pants are different, but I haven’t taken the time to look up everyone’s coat and figure it out =p
• This is the official medium set for Ash Legion. You can see it on Tribune Makk, all “Ash Legion Scouts” and some Legionnaires.

Heavy:

• Varies. Most commonly a mix of T3 and T2 cultural, and Banded armor.
• Pants are often T2 cultural, occasionally T3.
• Gloves and boots are commonly Banded, as are shoulders, though sometimes shoulders are T3 cultural.
• Chestpieces are commonly T3, sometimes T1.
• Just look at some of the NPCs in heavy and decide what you think fits you (and your budget) best.

The nice thing about going with a “canon uniform” is it accounts for tail clipping. The worst culprit is our medium armor, but it is hidden under a secondary flap so it isn’t horribly blatant.

It should also be noted that there are Ash Legion soldiers in full drover (T1 medium), as seen in Fireheart Rise on the “Ash Legion Agent”. He seems to be in standard “Engineer” blue dye colors though.

Wow, thank you so much for this this answer, Aryto! I admit I have never even thought of checking my mid level leatherworking patterns. Will try it out tomorrow.

One thing I’ve noticed because I use T1 on my necro, is that charr NPC’s never seem to use the leggings. It’s usually T2 or some kind of pants.

Aryto, the medium armor that you recommend is actually not the style that Kiza is asking about. As near as I can figure out the items that look like the Ash Legion Spy outfits are:

Helm: Archon Helm (Tier 2 Charr cloth)
Chest: Invoker’s Coat (Tier 1 Charr cloth)
Gloves: Invoker’s Gloves (Tier 1 Charr cloth)
Leggings: Unknown, but many leather and cloth leggings are close
Boots: Archon Boots (Tier 2 Charr cloth)

Since it’s not possible to transmute light and medium armors together, basically you’re SOL.

All the more reason armor should be unhooked from profession!

If I want to me a Charr Engineer in a breast plate with a cowboy hat, by George it should be allowed!!

Nosir, I’m pretty sure the worst culprit is the t3 light cultural armor.

No, the set is correct. Look around in the Citadel again. There are Ash Legion Charr in light armor (which is the one you listed) and medium armor which more look like a marksman with the helmet. There is usually one around the entry to the core where the trait manual merchants are.

Sadly, I couldn’t stand the helmet and the chest piece due to clipping so I replaced those with T1 helmet and Shiro’s Coat. Best find ever. Plus even with abyss dye the chest piece was still blurry gray.

This is correct for light armor Ash and is much more descriptive than my original saying simply “T1 and T2 cultural.”

We’ve since discovered a few more canonical options:

• Duelist medium armor has been verified on several NPCs known to be or have been Ash Legion, especially the coat, shoulders, and gloves.
• Pitch dye seems to make an acceptable low-cost alternative for heavy armor and some other styles (such as Duelist). Abyss and Black remain the best picks.

I agree that the (Coarse) Leather Coat is too “grey” with Abyss dye. I don’t really like how light it is when compared to say, Duelist and most heavy armor which is a very dark black.

With male Charr, the tail clipping isn’t as awful as most due to the fact there’s a layered flap covering where it exits the coat, but it’s certainly far from the optimum of having an actual tail-cloth.

Honestly I hate abyss dye on most armor, it’s too bland. If you want some flavor try the various shades of the midnight dyes. Some like the midnight sky and midnight blue are even more black than abyss and have a nice colored sheen to them when viewed at the right angle. Not to mention they’re about 1/4 the price lol. As for which midnight dye you need, you’ll have to test it out and see. Each one dyes differently with all different kinds of armor. Some don’t dye dark enough at all on one kind of armor, and yet on another set they show up nearly black.

If only Abyss / Black weren’t so expensive! I’ve got the proper armor pieces for my Thief but can’t afford the dye (my Charr is my primary alt, not my main). I wish there was a dye preview so I could see how the midnight shades work on the armor.

I think you can preview dyes, though you probably need a link to it.

The Legs are Ascalonian Catacombs Legs. It was bugging me too for a while.

I’m not sure what you mean with preview. Can you right-click on a dye and preview your armor with it?

Ah, didn’t even consider that! I will try that with the different Midnight dyes to test them out, thanks for the heads up.

Bringing this up because I’m wondering if you’ve found these leggings. I know the rest is T1 cultural, but I haven’t found the leggings yet. They seem to be on various ash legion, this one from Fireheart Rise.

As far as I can tell, these aren’t available to players. Much like most of the cultural town clothes, there are some items NPCs wear that we can’t. They also mix n’ match across armor types (heavy/medium/light), which we can’t do. =(
