Hello! New to the Guild Wars forums so go easy on me, please

I first rolled a Sylvari, and was satisfied for awhile. However, I decided to go to the opposite side of the spectrum and rolled a Charr engineer. What I’m noticing is that in the Sylvari home-area, I’m hitting 30+ fps, with most of it in the 40-45 range. When I play in the Charr area, I do between 8 and 11. Why is this? Initially I assumed it was the rain and thought it would stop when the rain stopped, but I’ve already killed Barradin and moved on and the lag is still there. If I log out of my Charr and go to my Sylvari, I retain my 30+ fps. Is there something wrong with the Charr area?

Sure I can. But I didn’t spend 800 dollars putting together a rig and then 60 dollars on the game to look at a choppy game…

Could you be seeing more players where your at? I’m not seeing any decrease in FPS while in or around the Plains of Ascalon. Your best bet regardless would be to open up a support ticket.

It does appear to have one huge memory leak in that area. I have a monster gaming rig with 64gb ram and a GeForce GTX680 on an Asus Sabretooth mainboard and this is the only area in the game that slows me down to about 15fps ( I get well above 60fps everywhere else regardless of how many players are around)

I spend a huge amount of time in the Black Citadel and Ascalon. There are some very specific areas that cause my (also beefy) rig to drop to 11-15 FPS. They’re well-documented, I’ve sent at least a million bug reports on them ever since beta 2.

That said, I have found a work-around that works for me:

  • When you hit an area that tanks the FPS, hit F11, go to the graphics options tab, then select “Best Performance” from the “Settings Preset” drop-down.
  • Now re-open the same “Settings Preset” drop-down and choose either “Auto Detect” or “Best Appearance” (For me, both options do the same thing).

This essentially reloads all the textures and such and while yes, it is annoying to have to do this several times in a play session while wandering around, it does seem to work for me. It will cause my FPS to jump from 18 to 50 inside the Imperator’s Core (one notable trouble spot). In some cases when I’ve been playing a long time, this workaround does not work, and only rebooting the game (not computer) fixes the mem leak.

There is something going on with the way everything is loaded and the kinds of textures used in this area which causes this issue. Funny enough, while everyone on the planet complains about FPS in WvW, I run in WvW on max settings and FPS never drop below 50, yet the Black Citadel Imperator’s Core will punch my FPS in the face every time I enter it.

Maybe it will work for you, too but of course your mileage may vary.

It’s been slow for me too you just have to adjust your settings. I have the newest Alienware 14 and it did that to me too just adjust the settings. But i can’t remember which settings i changed.

Hey Anet. You ever goign to fix this memory leak or whatever the heck it is? Still plagues this zone. I have to alt tab to get rid of it.

That and the glitchy audio where it goes dead silent and then turns back on makign for an awful looping experience?

Not exactly sure about the Plains of Ashford, but I do know that the Black Citadel is horribly optimized, and there are all kinds of hidden assets that need to be rendered. There are even gears and pistons blasting flames and smoke out of them in some spots, that you can only see if you break out of the map, as well as all kinds of other junk that is rendered, but never visible (if you don’t break out of the map).

Basically Anet needs someone to go into the BC map with a delete button, and clear out a lot of complicated junk that isn’t even visible (as it is hidden underneath the ground). Perhaps Ashford is similar in spots.
