Charr vs Asura : Engineer?
Because you can get a
CHARRZOOKA!!!!
and other cool stuff.
Plus you’re big and tough which can be appealing to a lot of people instead being intellectual know it all small tiny Asura. They get upset easily more than a charr and they always have to prove themselves to be better than any other races out there.
It’s worth pointing out that, in canon, the Charr invented combat engineering. And in all fairness, flame-thrower wielding Charr look especially expletive-deleted. The steampunk looking Charr shield, especially when carried by a Charr, looks especially good on an engineer. And I say this despite the fact that all of my characters are Asura.
(But you’ll have to be able to put up with the nearly constantly snarly voice acting that makes everybody sound like a steroid abuser with a 3 pack a day cigarette habit, and the really, really stupid-looking run animation.)
Thanks for the replies
I can see why Charr would be good for being an engineer, and as always, more replies are thanked.
I think I might make 2 engineers, up to lvl 35, and test out AC story and exp with Explosives engineer (Charr), and FT engineer (Asura), and see which Iike, so I solve two problems at once
But still, more replies are appreciated!
My main is a warrior but I made a charr engineer. I had an asura one once but I figured bigger character means bigger guns! Plus charrzooka. I will admit though, running around as a little asura with a flame thrower is hilarious!
This might be personal because my first character was actually a charr engineer.
But:
- engineer style is all about makeshift-scotch-taped weaponry and gadgetry, much more charry than asura because of the total lack of their magitech or what’sthename.
- “Charr” is also pronounced as “steampunk”. There you go.
- Charr engie in SE armor and FT is a plus on itself.
- Awesome idle animations with both rifle/FT and pistols (especially this. That “bang” motion makes me smile everytime).
- And if you like background, we have a full legion about engineering. We might say, statistically, about one fourth of the charr population is engineer. And who do you actually think built the Death Star Black Citadel? Iron Legion wants you. Possibly w/ your flamethrower.
GEARS! CLANKY NOISES! MORE GEARS! USELESS OPEN-SKY FOUNDRIES!

Trust in Iron, not False Gods!
Seriously, Charr all the way when deciding between Asura and Charr for Engineer. Heck, make your Charr Engineer an Iron Legion member at creation and they develop a Ghostbore Musket and can take control of a super-awesome Prototype Siege Cannon in one of the missions to take out Ascalonian Ghosts, all while a Blood Legionnaire is hurling insults at the ghosts to bring them within firing range.
Hidden Pistol tool belt skill is pretty good.
Ya I’d honestly be comparing the racial skills here. My Asuran engineer makes good use of his, especially on toolbelt.
from a powerplay/diversity perspective, you gotta look at toolbelt skills and ELITES!
(cause engineers Elites suck balls)
So you are looking at the following choices:
Asura: Great toolbelt skills, Pain Inverter is nice for an adapted TANKCAT build(no cat tho, let’s call it TANKMIDGET instead) Elites are so bad, I’d take supply drop all day.
Charr: Got the style. Besides the always powerfull shrapnel mine, they don’t bring much on the table tho unless you are into drawing hidden pistols with a profession using pistols anyway. Charrzooka is a bit lackluster for an engi too as engi can have all of that anyway.
In addition:
Norn: Got arguably the strongest racial elites in the game. Always a good choice for professions with lackluster elites
Sylvari: Can bring an additional 2 second block and 3 sec invulnerability:D:D (seriously, going too tanky will hurt your damage)
Human: Might actually be quite decent, considering the toolbelt skills. Also, Reaper of Grenth is murder with all the tanky builds out there. Another fun combo might be big ol’ bomb -> avatar of melandru -> mass entangle, might be a kitten to set up tho.
All the racials aside, if you simply want to roleplay, unless you know how you wanna set up your Asura, the Charr is the safer choice lore wise. It’s rather easy to think of any generic engineer, really :>
Anyway, Iron Legion might be nice but I’m still loyal to Ash! Go eat your cogs, Iron cubs!

Roll a female charr and you’ll get a better voice actor, and keep a kit out while running (you know all those traits that make you go faster with kits?) and you’ll remain on two feet rather than four.
Regarding legions – Iron is far from being solely engineers, but the other legions also have engineers, albeit nor as many. I’m running an Ash Legion engineer (who recently hit 80) on the basis that she had basically been Q for her warband before she became the legionnaire… and secret operations require someone who’s good at setting explosives, general sabotage, and the occasional use of special weapons on the field.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
don’t know if its been mentioned elsewhere but I heard the camera goes all buggy on Asuran Engineers

I play an Asuran Engineer, and I can’t say I’ve had this problem?
Really, it comes down to racial abilities, and which race you prefer overall as to which you should probably choose. Both are great races, imo.
^ ever tried to use an Elixir S on your Asura?

I’m a proud Charr Engineer. I love my Charr and his fluffy self (I also use full rascal armor)…..but I will say, I ran Twilight Arbor with a fully decked out Asura Engineer last night, with a complete set of Asura themed armor….I was kinda jealous xD
I just got done leveling a Charr engineer. The way they hold a rifle is beyond kitten.
