So, I’m just now installing GW2 on a new PC after a pretty long break, and for some reason, I’m really into the idea of playing a Charr, specifically. I’m kinda leaning towards Engineer, but not totally sure on that part.

Anyways, I’m terrible when it comes to making up names, but I’d really like something that sounds “Lore-friendly”. That is, something that sounds like it could be an actual character’s name, but isn’t. I don’t role-play or anything, but I just like the thought of having a character who just really “fits” into the world, ya know?

Also; what do you think about the Engineer? Does it actually fit the Charr, or not so much? And, without spoiling anything, any preferences on the character-creation choices?

Rondo Gearstrip
Kral Boomthumper
Trak Treadshredder
Howl Overcharge

Take your pick, I’ve got more.

“People don’t hate Scarlet the way Game of Thrones
fans hate Joffrey. They hate her the way Star Wars
fans hate Jar Jar Binks.”-not a direct quote, but still true.

Friendly neighborhood lore nerd here Charr naming culture is simple for the most part.

The first is usually a unique, strong name that the charr is the most often referred to in everyday talk. Mostly it is between 7 to 4 (but of course doesn’t have to be) letters long and MOST of the time starts with a consonant letter with males and a bit more freedom with females.

The last name is a bit more regulated. It is ALWAYS a compound word, by tradition and culture. The first part of the name is the name of that charr’s warband. Because of this, it is lore friendly to never take the warband name of Flame, Iron, Ash, or Blood because those are the names of the legions…and to have such a name as a warband would be to proclaim yourself a descendant of the Khan-Ur. Big no-no basicly but players break that rule regardless.

The second part of the sir name is chosen “nickname” of sorts, that complements the first half of the word.

So for instance, Rytlock Brimstone is Rytlock of the Brim warband and his personal nickname within the group is “Stone”

My charr engineer is Cadov Blazeherald, Cadov of the Blaze warband, nickname being “Herald”

Hope this helped

Vodac covered the basics but one thing about Charr first names that’s worth noting is that there’s now two distinct types of charr first name. There’s the classic “beastial” sounding names that are in line with all the charr names we saw in GW1, things like Howl, Maw, Kragg, etc.

But there’s also a lot of Greico-Roman inspired names as well, this comes in as part of the charr’s “new culture” that goes along with the Roman ranking system and focus on advanced technology. These are names like Ajax, Sergius, Tycho, etc.

Actually, his warband is the Stone warband. I only know this from conversations with Rox about the trials she has been through in order to join Rytlock’s warband. You can still find her in the North Nolan Hatchery where that Flame and Frost instance was. You can still enter it and talk to her.

There is also the Night warband in Diessa Plateau. Some of the members break the traditional rule and have “night” as the second compound, such as Hazarar Razenight, Faint Ghostnight, and Rankar Harrownight who are part of the Flame Legion event in the northeast corner of the map.

These examples seem to be the exception rather than the rule. The majority of warband names do typically list the name of the warband as the first compound, followed by the nickname as the second.

Stuff goes here.
