Graceless combat moves?
…I’m not really sure what you’re talking about but I suppose I might see a branch to pick up sooner or later. Does it count if I beat it out of an oakheart, or are those different?
Well I main a Charr Guardian. Now I’ll be honest and say I don’t play other classes with Charr, so I can’t speak to that much, so I guess my main issue is with Guardian class and Charrs.
I don’t think it matters with the branch types. the #2 is a leap-like finisher. It’s the same animations that other races get for their Guardian’s GS #3, Leap of Faith skill. However, we don’t get the privilege of that. We get a clumsy looking slam that’s similar to the the Hammer slam. It’s the same with the GS autochain, the third attack is a flasy spin move on other races, with Charr, its just another side slash animation.
Charr charging attacks are pretty graceful, but charr are beasts first and foremost so they have more beastly characteristics in their animations.
Seems like personal preference. I’m pretty fond of the Charr melee animations personally, and I think beastly brute-force animations fit better than graceful spins. Charr may be feline, but that doesn’t mean they share every feline characteristic, and grace doesn’t nessicarily seem to be one of the characteristics they do have. Their body shape seems more built for brute force than grace.
Also, the 3rd attack on GS chain isn’t a flashy spin for all races. My female Sylvari Guardian has an awkward-looking upward swing. Her Leap of Faith is a sort of jump + spin (which I assume is the same one you’re talking about) but I think it looks pretty goofy spinning through the air while jumping like that, and much prefer my Charr Ranger’s “all fours run and overhead slam” that he gets using Swoop, one of my favorite attack animations in the game. Not sure if a Charr Guardian’s Leap of Faith uses that same animation or a different one.
Profession might factor in as well, because my Charr Ranger does have some spins. His 3rd attack for Greatsword autochain is a slow spin, and 2nd attack for 1H sword auto-attack is a spinning kick.
I have Charr characters with all the greatsword professions. And I have to say, that I think GS guardian looks the least natural and graceful.
Ranger and Warrior GS animations look fantastic in my opinion. The Guardian leap of faith is the same animation (minus the visual effects) as Ranger’s Swoop, which fits much better.
It just kinda feels to me, at first glance anyway, that Charr guardian GS animations are sorta the afterthought, as they were made with the other professions in mind.
That being said, I love Charr Guardian staff. Other races have an ugly overhead ‘thwomp’ with the autoattack that I just cannot stand. Looks like someone’s grandmother chasing off would be purse bandits with a broom…
For the toast!
Halcyon nailed the head so to speak.
At least make a variance to the Guardian GS auto (like the Ranger auto), and either #2 or #5.

Oh god, now I’m going to have a mental image of my Sylvari guardian smacking ’dem darn teenagers and telling them to get off her lawn. Thanks a lot.
That “thwomp” animation is still better than most of the other staff animations in the game that don’t even use the staff, though. Hate how all my other casters just hold the staff to the side and cast their magic with their hand. Its a weapon, use it as one!
I’m fine with most of the combat animations, excluding very few, like the Leap of Faith. Unlike others, it doesn’t look brutal, just clumsy.
On the other hand, in my opinion, the axe attack chain on the Warrior and Hundred Blades look so darn good. I remember when i first tried axes on my Charr I was like “LOL holy kitten” when he did a triple chop on the enemy. Just felt like he bashed him into the kitten ground with it, I loved it.
Killing an enemy with mace 4 on a warrior as a charr is also satisfying, even though it’s a fatally incorrect usage of it.
Honestly, if I saw Charr using “Leap of Faith” like other races do, I’d delete my Charr. The Charr’s one is clearly the more brutal, with the others doing some odd twirl with no visible power behind it. When I imagine Charr, I think ferocity rather than grace, despite them technically being akin to felines; which, are otherwise graceful etc. Well, that’s the way I see it.

For the Hammer F1, it’s fine, but I think Leap of Faith needs to be adjusted a bit. It looks a wee bit too much like silly bending rather than brute force, even though there’s some in it.
I think I can get behind this OP. But, I think all races have problems here and there. The human guardian’s ‘empower’ has the female in a backwards bending arc straight from the Exorcist and the male squatting and grimacing as if to, well, you get the idea. I wasn’t happy with my male Charr warrior’s hundred blades compared to other races. He looks like he’s waving the sword. But, I love his axe animation better than any other race. He just looks sooo Blood Legion.
But, feline grace? Yeah, we could use more of that.

Hundred Blades always looked to me like a really terrible use of force and leverage. Seeing my character stand there with a huge heavy sword and swipe it back and forth like that makes me think he’s an idiot.
The axe one is funny though, it’s like after the first three hits you get ‘unhappy’ at it for still being alive and decide to dispense with this ‘cutting’ and just bludgeon it to death.

About the axe thing, yes, it’s so amazing, I just love it.
And well, opinions I guess, Hundred Blades looks fine to me, especially the final blow.
Charr hack and hammer with their weapons most of the time it seems. I don’t mind it but I’ve only played my warrior and ranger. Rangers got some graceful moves.
Rangers got some graceful moves.
Yes they do. I wish some of those moves were used on some of the Guardian’s.
I play Elementalist and I don’t like the way they animated Burning Speed for Charrs. They look kinda silly.

Oh god, yes. That animation is terrible. They just… suddenly slide across the ground. Having the character “surf” on the ground had some potential to be cool in theory with the right movements in the arms and legs, but the animation just looks stiff and ridiculous. Like they’re on rollerskates but don’t really know how to use them, so they just tense up and tell someone else to push them forward.
I made a Charr Elementalist just to test the animations and I was pretty impressed until I got to that one. That single animation made me glad my actual Elementalist is an Asura (who leaps forward like a rocket with Burning Speed).
I see charr as less graceful, but they move with the least amount of wasted movement possible, coming from a culture of war.
look at the warrior mace animation. smack, smack, ready for it? SLAM!

Hmm…. never really looked too closely at it. I always thought it was kinda like a martial arts move and thus cool. Looking at Charr forums make me wish I made mose of my characters as a Charr
