Jumping Puzzles as a Charr
Oh, if you think they’re hard as a charr, just try doing them as a max size norn…
Hey guys,
I really love the look and feel of the Charr, but I sometimes regret making one:
I was just recently doing one of the Lion’s Arch Jumping Puzzles (Trolls End [?]) and it just feels TERRIBLE. After 15 minutes of glitching and weird camera movement I could tell how claustrophobics might feel. I had a huge problem making out the right distance to walk on those rocks and fell of quite a couple of times…please just give us a resize/ be-an-asura tonic for jumping puzzles in caves.
i’d love a tonic like that…
ps. captain obvious from apb by any chance?
That puzzle is one of the hardest because of the super close quarters. I have a large charr and most puzzles are still very do-able. Some are even better on the charr IMO. I have a lvl 80 asuran ele that can maintain swiftness indefinitely and I often over jump the small jumps but at the same time the swiftness is necessary for the rest of the puzzle. Even without the swiftness, I still over jump quite often.
As the charr it seems much easier to make those tiny platforms and I usually don’t have a problem doing them.
Sorry if that was very botched, I sorta just wrote it down as it came and didn’t really check it because I’m in a rush
I’ve completed all of the jumping puzzles and the one that was most painful tbh is Troll’s End. As a Charr in those small places are just hardmode, you can’t see anything and camera is glitching out and you more end up jumping on chances to get right then trying to fix camera.
Camera in close quarters is just bad on any char in the game not just the charr. IMO trolls end it was ridiculous, took me about 2 hours for it to stop just freezing in a horrible spot to get anywhere lol.
I also play a max size charr, and this is the one puzzle that made me wish there was a first person view as there were times I could literally see nothing but my characters backside, meaning I had to try and pan my camera around just to get a glimpse of my surroundings.
By the way all jump puzzles are doable without swiftness, however swiftness just makes a lot of them a hell of a lot easier.
Good to know that this one is the worst around for a Charr and I got it done
@Vuh: Sorry, but no… :/
I had tons of trouble with jumping on my charr, then my hubby noticed that I had to jump from where the BACK feet are, and things got a lot better. Sure was strange at first though.
I didn’t really find Troll’s End to be much of an issue on my max size Charr. In fact, I was a bit disappointed by it with how much someone in map chat was hyping it up with how terrible it was for Charr, and then it didn’t take any more attempts than any other jumping puzzle I’ve done.
It’s more of a problem with camera behavior around walls than anything else. Cameras shouldn’t get “stuck” when they would otherwise be inside a rock. They should simply move through the terrain and make it transparent-ish so that you can actually see what your character is doing still.
At the very least, they need to allow the camera to zoom in to first-person perspective.
You know what they say about the leading man? He never dies.

It takes you 37 tries for every puzzle then?
There is a Quaggan in the Straits of Devastation (near Thunderhead Battery) who sells Baby Quaggan Potions. I tend to keep a few on hand in case I’m struggling with a jumping puzzle camera. You do have to rescue him from the risen first, though, so it’s not ideal
The problem then is that you become short, but the camera stays at the same height, meaning you risk being too short for the screen.

Cute, but no. Took about half a dozen attempts, and I wasn’t particularly bothered about the camera when I figured out how to position it so that it was inside my character’s body, giving me a nearly unimpeded view of each jump.
If only you could jump, when using tonics, this would be a non-problem… AND make tonics useful.

+1 for this post, tonics have to be the most useless part in the game – tied with Trahearne.
Guys: Charr J-Puzz’ling is just expert-mode. Challenge: accepted!
If you’re knocking those puzzles out on your Charr, welcome to the club of the elite. You giant Norn can be honorary members too!

Must say I think the jump puzzles are just plain badly designed. if you’re going to cram them into small confined places, at least we need some way to lock the camera so we don’t end up jumping blind cos the camera won’t stay in any remotely useful angle to show you what you’re trying to land on.
That’d be the camera that needs fixing, Bathos. The jumping puzzles themselves are designed fine by and large, they just require timing and patience.
I did Troll’s End last night on my sylvari guardian “main”. She’s just shy of maximum height and has the heaviest possible build, but she’s still a twig compared to a healthy norn or charr. And even so, the camera’s erratic spasms made me so motion-sick that I had to take a break for fear of throwing up. Of course, the motion sickness caused my jumping skills to suffer, which meant more time spent inside that puzzle … and more motion sickness. Not fun at all. I have no intention to even try this with my charrior.
In another puzzle in Diessa Plateau, the one with all the ghosts, there was a point at which I couldn’t see anything because a wooden beam above my charr’s head would slam the camera into her face.
Camera behavior in tight spaces really needs to be fixed. If the biggest challenge in a jumping puzzle is not timing, patience or a keen eye, but getting the camera to give you a good, steady view, something is badly wrong.
huh… I find jump puzzles easier on my charr than the asura. Maybe its just because my charr is my main and im use to it. I freaking rage quite jump puzzles as the asura.
The camera does go a bit crazy in jumping puzzles. It’s like they were mostly made for smaller races and the design team just forgot that the charr and the norn exist. So the only real option is to create a smaller-than-normal charr or norn.
They either need to go back and fix these areas, or at the very least they need to implement a first-person camera that won’t be affected by this so much.
The problem isn’t the character sizes, it’s the camera. It will completely freak out whenever it has to focus on your character in a tight space. This is in no way a problem only the charr have.
if anything its just bragging rights, now some can say they got all the vistas but how many can say they got all the vistas on a giant mother kitten furry , and theres always mesmer portals
I had to take several breaks when attempting Troll’s End, out of both frustration and motion sickness from the constant camera spasms.
They really need to fix this = \
Yes, I won’t be doing any of the jumping puzzles with my charr. That said, the camera is funky for every character in tight spaces, regardless of its size.
I don’t know how many times I’d do a jump when SUDDENLY LEAVES. Covering the entire screen. It’s not as bad as the camera in Troll’s End, but still very annoying.
Trolls end… I’ve done it once with my Charr, I don’t know how, I don’t remember when i did it, but i’ve done it, and I won’t do it again.
At any rate, I’m determined to complete everything on my Charr, I mean i’ve personally already knocked out about a 3rd of them, and once you understand the positioning its pretty straight forward.
I’m dreadful at jumping puzzles, doesn’t matter what race I’m playing … I suck at them; this does not, however, mean I don’t try them when I find them and sometimes I even succeed!
I play both a max-size norn and a max-size charr and can confirm that the norn is easy-mode by comparison just because he’s a biped. On the other hand, in the combat puzzles it’s slightly easier to tell if I’m out of the combat-state with my charr because he suddenly runs on all fours.
Piken Square
I agree, the puzzles are a bit punishing with the camera, but a buddy of kine made a max height norn and apparently he has it way worse.
One thing I thought of after doing troll’s end last night was maybe trying to use my elixir S and see if the shrink helps at all in tight spots. Might try that tonight and see.
