She’s absolutely terrifying. Those eyes, that cute face… blech.
I also noticed the new hair / horns, though. Not 100% sure they’re new (its been a while since I made my female Charr), but I don’t recognize them, nor the norn’s hairstyle either. If they are new, they better be usable by players and not NPC-exclusive, and hopefully it means that they’re going to add more customization options in general in the near future.
I hope this means we will be seeing new hair, horns and faces. ;____;
I like cute and by cute, I mean baby animals and adorable pink stuffy quaggan backpacks with little bows all over cute. I am not ashamed. Yet I must say, I don’t actually find her very cute…o____________o She is actually quite scary. Although those horns are still awesome no less. Females could use bigger badder horns options.

We didn’t see her body size yet. If she is still a adolescent, her body is still growing in different proportions and her eyes may not be as big as we think. All the “strange looking” can be explained by the fact that her face is still developing and so far it does not correspond to the size of the eyes.

No I don’t think it looks cute as a female worgen and I don’t know why would you want to compare it with that. The female worgens model was a rush job and not the original they were going for. Female worgens are horrendous in my opinion.
If that’s suppose to be the new face / looks for the female charr model then I say that’s the female charr in the youthful years around 18. Plus we can customize the look so I don’t know why people want to get so hype up about its appearance and exaggerating when we have the customization option.
As Khyber said it’ll make someone happy and that’s what Anet wants. To make customers happy. So appreciate and don’t choose the face end of story.

That is more or less what I meant; that it looks horrendous. Female worgen are “cute” chihuahua-like compared to the more fierce male. They do not even look to be the same race. This is the same to me. We have the fierce-looking male Charr, and the female Charr… Then there’s Rox. The kitty sub-species of Charr.
And when I say Cute here, I mean cute in the bad way. Not the “looking good cute”, more “baby doll this is making me sick-cute”
It’s not quite the eye size or the cutesy face that makes her terrifying. I think it’s mainly the lack of depth in her eyes. She has this really shallow shocked/crazed expression at the moment. If her pupils were moved up closer to the top and stronger shadows and lights were added in, she would have a much more natural looking expression. In the screenshot provided, her eyes are missing the most alluring aspect of all cat eyes which is the beautiful glossy glass-like marbled look. They capture light and reflection like crazy. Of course, it could just be the image that makes them seem so dull. It’s hard to tell when you can’t see her in game for yourself.
That name can’t have been available when they made this NPC…Is her name Rox [Warband name]? I’m pretty sure a lot of characters, Asura or not, would have wanted Rox or Roxx as a name.
Christ, that is terrifying…nice horns though. It’s the first time I’ve seen forward facing horns on the female charr. Doesn’t fit with her face at all but still on a different Charr they could be nice.
Yes, she’s supposed to be young, but I must summarily dismiss a claim of that’s why she has giant eyes. Only very young animals have such a disproportion, and if you were to look at any cub in the game, you would see they don’t even have the proportion shown here. They wouldn’t get more disproportionate with age, only more proportionate to adults. Since she is clearly older than a cub, I must dismiss the “she’s just that young” argument.
Therefore that’s just how she is by nature. And it is not consistent with anything I’ve seen before in the game.

You know one of the biggest reasons I wanted into this game and I will admit it was the unique beast design the Charr had and the logic behind it in this article.
It made me really happy to see a female designer in charge of a race that actually cared about good design. I was actually going to have a race to play that wasn’t furry porn like the Worgen were or stripper humanoid races that wear metal thongs. (See Humans and Norn in GW2 for reference) They had a unique culture based off things such as the Mongols with an almost steampunkish like feel and it was amazing.
This image of Rox makes it feel like they fired Kerry then hired on some random w-e-e-a-b-o-o from a convention to work with the designer of the human armor. So they could create something that would be popular with the quote -kids- and bring more people into playing the Charr. Akin to the logic Blizzard used with Blood Elves for the Horde which no actual Horde player ever wanted but man… the Night Elf Alliance players had a hard on for it.
It just throws out all the amazing work in my opinion done for the Charr in favor of generic garbage. The youth excuse trying to justify it is utter failure and grasping at straws by kitten anime fans who want the design to stay. Youth gives you things such as gangly arms. pimples, odd fur/hair colors. Not giant creepy generic anime eyes.
This image alone really makes me not want to follow the Charr story anymore and if anything even as a female Charr player? It makes me want to support the flame legion so it can die in a fire.

My opinion is, I generally don’t care for Rox’s design (specifically the horns + face combo) but then I also don’t like the cub design either since they really have no design behind them, they are simply shrunken Charr models…but you’ve puffed up your chest to defend that, masking your intent with praise of ‘good design’.
But to each their own. Not everyone has a decent sense of design as it varies with taste.

The person in question clearly must be in a rage induced state of posting while frothing at the mouth! As we all know this is the way people communicate in real life when expressing an opinion!
As for the no context bit? Are you kidding? During the 5 year development of the game they spoke constantly of what they wanted from the artistic style of the game and what they wanted to portray with each race. There are even whole articles talking about how and why the Charr are the way they are and where they want to go with them in the future. We are given a glimpse of Rox with a biography akin to something you’d see in a JRPG. You can draw quite abit from that considering how much it is unlike anything else in the game or stated desires for the future of said game.
I didn’t puff up my chest but I did an express an opinion. I know that might be hard for you to grasp but people do that in real life. It doesn’t mean the are hostile. I know this is hard for someone who is only hostile and brave on the net to grasp but it is true. My opinion just happened to align with many others who fell in love with the Charr for these reasons and posted about them during the beta. Whole threads of love for the Charr design for these reasons and how they were so happy they didn’t have generic things like giant Worgen breasts from WoW. The simple fact is giant anime eyes is bad design and any high school art teacher would tell you that. They’d even tell you to go back and redo the assignment till you got the basics right. Then develop your own unique style.
You are right not everyone has a decent sense of design. As seen from the people who defend Rox or use the guise of not liking her design to attack others who speak their opinion about it. After all you are not defending it if you hate it as well right? “rolls eyes”

Speaking out after something has already gone into effect is always to late. You either speak your mind before something hits or do not bother at all in a game like this because it will be to much of a hassle for it to be removed after it is in. Especially on cosmetics when players start to use it. So if it makes it that far you will never be rid of it. Pretty much been almost a standard like that with MMORPG’s for years.
The only logical option is to speak out in advance not later after it hits.
I think your overacting a but there KorKor. One weirdly cutesy Charr dose mean they are dumping their design decisions and ruining everything.
Maybe a little but when something like that makes it into a game with a single major story character like that sooner or later due to the design already in the game it will probably be added to the roster of choices for players down the road.
It also sets a standard for future designs of younger Charr that will be added to the game. As this could turn into a template. Especially considering it is a part of the living story which is supposed to be ongoing for quite some time. So it means this character will be something that many players will be forced to interact with sooner or later if they wish to progress with this part of the game.
It isn’t so much of an overreaction as it is looking forward at things that can happen if it makes it into the game at this time. Looking at what it would mean and bring if it was allowed to go forward. If one wishes for a better design you have to speak out against the bad one before it makes it in not after when it is to late.
I think you are over exaggerating Rox by quite a bit. She is like every other Charr with slightly different features in her face. I would in no way think that is even close to ‘Worgen porn’ or breaking original design theories. The character is still sprouting Charr armor, a flat chest, claws and everything else about Charr anatomy. The only real difference being her bigger eyes and button nose. Two features. A look you can create yourself using the current presets and sliders.
So every other Charr has giant anime eyes pulled from a high school art book that looks nothing like the rest of the race and looks horribly out of place with their other features such as their horns? Interesting…
Also this design change is on par with the Worgen that had absurd breasts because the logic behind it probably is the same. The idea of getting more people to like a race in a generic manner that would otherwise not be interested in it. That or to cater to a lower denominator that is often a standard in fantasy games or this case anime fans. Rather then challenging yourself to create something interesting and unique to attract these people that fits in line with the standards you already put forward.
The face is one of the most important features though for human interaction. We look at the face of nearly ever living creature we come across by default because it is built into us as humans. It is by reading each others faces or even looking away in horror that sets the standard for future interaction with a person before you even speak. Humans judge much off of a single face. As such this is a major design feature that actually means far more then several of the others.
Also the giant eyes do not compliment any of the other features that are innately Charr. Let alone the others they added to her such as the giant horns. They conflict with them in mass and very much give the feeling of not belonging. These features conflict with the design they have and the designs put forth for the future of the Charr as stated by them not me.
Oh.. and while you can make larger eyes on the Charr with the sliders. You cannot make giant anime eyes on the Charr exactly like those. You can do it on the Asura though and you see it a ton on them ingame. Even there it looks a little freaky but other things such as the floppy ears offset it.

Well there are many positives to this nature of humanity. Such as with our canine companions evolving along side us to be the same way. Dogs actually get information off us in the same way and the only creature that interacts with us in that same manner. This helps to create that deep bond people have with them. So there is positive sides to all these visual aspects.
Until they start sprouting boobs, I don’t think there’s grounds to complain. They aren’t changing any of the NPCs or your PC, they are just adding more looks and options and, again, until those options start to develop into Charr boobs or what have you, why make a huge fuss about it?

In the vast majority of media non human females are either "cute’ or humans with accessories (and often using “non human culture” as an excuse for them to be promiscuous and not wear much). I would really rather they keep the cute out of the Charr.

The horns there are a right step but the eyes and scrunched features that go with it not so much. Anet does need to design more features yes but I’d like to hope they are far more creative then reaching into the trope beast bowl and I’d like to hope they’d correct this mistake called Rox before it gets put into the game and it something that can never truly be taken back.
Also I’ve had far more conversations in LA with people that did not like the face but loved the horns. Then I have with any that just outright liked her. I think it is safe to assume that these people just do not like to post on the forums or due to the reactions when voiced their opinion for cool female types in other games they got shot down so they’ve given up in advance on posting anymore. Here is a single screenshot as the rest got pushed up my log while I was trying to WvW. Hopefully I can get more in the future. Stating the simple bit I said about the horns.

Now, I must ask you one thing if you do not mind. Can you please quote me in exact where I said anything along the lines of, “According to ‘myself’, we need generic cutesy anime Charr to truly get real creative options for the female Charr”?? I’m sure you would have trouble, because I did not state that at all. What I said was, I believe people should proudly play their characters no matter how they look; whether that is cute, fearsome, or non-stereotypical. I also mentioned that I would love more variety and options within the race in general, also listing examples. Yes they were highlighted towards males because I play males in particular, but my view towards females is no different. One of the big reasons I like this race is because of it’s equality towards gender after all. Flame legion aside. As much as I respect your strong opinion on this, which believe me, I do. However as someone who has gamed in these type of games since UO and EQ. I am very tired of seeing these tropes make it into these games. I’ve seen them make it in and what comes with them so so many times I pretty much already know what is going to happen before it even hits and it is always the same.
I love GW2 and how it finally gave me a race I really enjoyed playing that was creative and here for me. Not to cater to some teenager with a plush anime fetish or a teenage male still dealing with a kitten they can never get rid of so they role female toons to look at the butt all day. I’d just really really really really hate to lose that and if this door is opened trust me. You can’t shut it again for this type of game. Not without backlash.
I can’t blame anyone for getting a bit worked up over this. The charr have held a lot of meaning for some, including me, as a step in the proper direction for playable races.
You can easily make a charr that looks like a kitten without the dreaded huge eyes and thousand yard stare.

Everything else is just so wrong. I thought it was a photoshopped early April Fools’ joke before seeing it elsewhere on the GW2 website. Unless they change her design before the patch, I’m going to avoid her like the plague, because “anime eyes” and the bad taxidermy look may be contagious…
