I think the people complaining about Rox’s eyes aren’t trying to downgrade the entirety of the patch. They are just trying to voice their opinion that they’re unhappy with Rox’s eyes. Also, unless I’m mistaken, I see no indication that the NPCs will be taken out of the game after F&F is over.

I think they’re just trying to give her a really unique face so she won’t be forgot. I see no problem with it.

I love how Rox looks. She’s probably a character we might see more of! I hope that it will just be Rox that looks like that, horns and all, so we have Rox being 100% unique looking and memorable.

My personal theory is that we’re getting some new cool characters for new dungeons, or similar instances. Sure, we already have destinys edge, but eh, I’d rather see some new characters for new dungeons/instances! I’m still hoping Tassi makes her spooky return for some future non halloween content. Maybe something related to dhuum? Oh who knows. But yeah, give her a chance before you judge, she might look a bit weird, but all the new NPCs have been quite nicely written/VA’d, so I have no doubt everyone will be pleased once FaF moves onto the razing. The only gripe I have is that she uses seeker coat instead of maybe t1-2 cultural. But that’s more personal taste than anything.

I’m excited and happy about this, and hey, if I’m happy, I usually don’t make noise, but I thought I’d share my thoughts on Rox.

Once upon a time, they did memorable by giving them pink fur, or a longer jawline.

Now we’re creeping ever closer to piranhas-chewing-on-your-eyeballs kind of memorable.

Rox and Braham are normal people that decided to step it up for the good of their race, correct? What reason would they have to stay once the Flame and Frost issue is dealt with? Mad King Thorn and Toymaster Tixx are both gone, I assume Rox and Braham will be seasonal characters as well.

Here’s hoping they change it before it goes live. Integrity of female charr or no, that just looks downright creepy and sloppy.

Big differences from the original faces

Getting a better look at her, there’s nothing wrong except maybe how the horns attach to her head/their scale.

Yeah, in that new screen shot the only thing that looks weird about her is the horns (she looks like am imp). Her eyes look fine in that new screen shot, they have a young/naive look to them which could be a cool part of the story they are trying to tell. Where did that screen shot come from?

Your example of the existing faces doesn’t really show the maximum size a charr’s eyes can be. I know from experimenting that I did, it’s possible to make them bigger than the examples you showed.

So did the entire original anet design team get fired or something? This is seriously disgusting and insulting to me as a serious charr player. I used to be able to point to this game as one of the only examples of making a beast race female right, but not any more.

That new screenshot makes her seem a bit better or maybe I’ve just stared at her way too much to be able to differentiate at this point. Her face on the first instantly screamed fruit bat at me, not necessarily in a bad way. She really does look impish which I kind of like. XD

The second picture is quite a bad screenshot all together. I will write that one off since bad screenshots never justify what’s really in game.

I really don’t think you can, I tried my very hardest. Though, with all attempts I ended up with a very scary looking charr, so poor Rox might just be the victim of a strange racial trait.

Anyways, Her eyes are still a tad bit bigger, but you could put her beside faces 2, 3 and 5 pretty easily. Especially if they were adjusted to be a little smaller. You might be able to set her next to number 8 as well, but she’s pretty elderly looking and those big eyes make her look…errr….‘interesting’ at the very least. All of those faces share similar qualities though. They have the shorter snout, smaller teeth/mouth, rounder face and bigger eyes. Much like Rox, with the exception that her eyes are slightly larger, not by too much.

1, 6, 4 and 7 appear a bit more ‘lion-esque’ to a degree, while the rest seem to be inspired by ‘smaller’ breeds of felines in comparison. 7 has a shorter snout and 4 has larger eyes. Both of those faces are pretty monstrous and are much more loosely based off of felines, similar to most male Charr. Not sure if many would bundle those four together because of that.

*Able to match the Guild Wars art style and quality level

and it is not unusual after a successful launch the original art team moves up to different roles or goes to other projects altogether, letting new artist come up but the art lead is not having much QC.

It will sadly filter on over now slowly but surely. You know the anime fans will go really nuts for it sadly much like the Legolas fans in MMORPG’s in other games that played Elves and Night Elves.

The Charr were a breath of fresh air for beast type races and creative design and it is quite a shame they trading it in to slowly but surely try to make the race a little more popular down the road. Just one step back toward the thong bikini mentality really which is sad. =/

Because they went with anime logic! That and pulled the designer of the humans over for the Charr. You know the one that put makeup all over all the human children… So expect for human female stereotypes to filter in.

You nefarious fiend! If you do get those eyes, they better be a necromancer. It would just be wrong if they weren’t.
On topic, Rox is just as scary in game as she is in screenshots. However, I want the number of her makeup specialist. I want pretty eyelashes like that too.

My character is still standing at commander core. I could not believe what I saw. (If you look at my posting history you can see that I rarely comment anything negative. I like this game, but this failure was just too big to go unnoticed.)

Rox… that model’s face is just wrong and awful. Charr females were supposed to be fierce and strong. This one has freaky huge eyes + eyeliner… No! I do not wan’t that. She doesn’t even look to be same species with other charr. Her skull must be so much different with those eyeballs.

Whose idea was it to make her look like that? Who accepted that idea? Were you thinking that would make her somehow more appealing to players. What next, fyrry boobs?

Worgens on the other hand, I’m not too familiar with WoW so please correct me if I am wrong, have the same shape of heads for all of their presets from what I remember? Aside from gender that is.

Not saying something isn’t wrong with her, just that it is hard to compare Worgen and Charr in that sense. That thought aside, I agree with you 100% on the failure of WoW’s design. I really hate to see this kind of difference in gender. It’s one of my bigger peeves about the bestial races in most MMOs. I ultimately overlook it because I doubt it will ever change. I’ve come to believe that I must be the only person in the world to feel this way because every time I have ever brought it up, it has been treated to a lot of bashing. This is a trait actually seen within the Charr pretty prominently. Examples being, females get more ‘realistic’ feline faces, while males males are stuck with exaggerated monstrous ones. Along with other little things, such as females not being allowed to have abs for an option and males unable to remove them. Some females can show Abs when they jump, but I don’t count that. >_<

(Please don’t hate me for this, lol). Dare I say, Lyns from Blade and Soul are probably the only animal inspired race which doesn’t share this trait. Despite it, gender is still fairly easy to differentiate in game by they way they act, walk and speak. Very creative of Team Bloodlust. They also share clothes amongst their genders similar to the Charr. It’s the main reason I really like the Lyn. Not because they are cute, but because the whole race was designed to be truly equal with a few exceptions for outfits. (IE. girls having dresses, boys can wear tuxes on one or two outfits and what not). I seriously wish there were more created in a similiar fashion out there. Team Bloodlust could have easily done what is seen within the Elin/Popori, Untamed, Worgen or Charr. Instead, they chose to do something a little different and a lot of their fan base praise the Lyn for it.

Charr skulls have minor differences, but they are all “big cats” (the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, etc). Rox is not really cat anymore, her eyes are so large that she starts to look like prey instead of predator.

I can understand that. Seeing Rox beside a normal Charr is slightly frightening. Especially when it’s Weindrasi’s fem Charr in the same picture. She is probably the meanest looking gal in the game. Makes my male look like a cub, haha. :P I suppose the best you can do is give feedback and hope Anet caters to it. They have done so a lot in this patch in other areas of the game, and I highly doubt adjustments to her eyes would be that hard to do.

I’ve seen that article on WoW before and it sends shivers down my spine. Now I remember why I couldn’t stick to the the game as anything other than a feral druid. xD Still, 10x better than Elin/Popori and Perfect World’s Untamed not that it is any reason to justify how bad that is.

This reminds me of before launch when we couldn’t select eye colours. People who asked for it got similar responses. XD Anyways, I don’t think discussing Rox is wrong. I really love her character so far and am excited to see what becomes of her. Her AI wow’ed me at first. Sure it wasn’t amazing, but what a shocker! Such an improvement to have an ally that doesn’t die from every single mob. I couldn’t believe she actually had the ability to heal herself. I only had to revive her a grand total of one time and that was mainly my own fault! ONE TIME!!!! I can’t possibly be the only person to notice how much better she is when it comes to fighting. Her bow skills too…. As a ranger, I must ask where are my cool green poison effects with barrage? :P As long as Anet doesn’t turn her into Rytlock’s future love interest all is good for me. I don’t know how I would react if that were to happen…xD

Looks like its an atempt to introduce manga style eyes size into the game.. now that crap doesnt have NO place in gw2!.. IF theyre aiming at that that is.. if so i dunno..

To me Rox looks like Ugly Tiger with the eyes of a scottish fold cat transplanted on.

They wouldn’t looks so bad if they had more depth shading and were sized down a bit, but right now, she looks kinda soulless. And like she’d have sinus problems with her mashed in muzzle. Her “cute” face (not really cute to me) just looks really out of place with those gigantic horns, fearsome claws, and big, strong Charr body.

The issue isn’t with the fact that they wanted to make a cute Charr. It’s that it was done horribly. It looks unnatural, the eyes don’t fit on the face, the face is too smushed, the horns are too big, and her body is too big in proportion.

I do better work myself really, I mean they could have at least tastefully added a cute face.

I don’t have to be the lead here to:

*Understand and know when to use whimsical or natural features and all the myriads in-between.

*Know how to concept, draw, and render proper animal/human anatomy and skull structure.

*work within the confines of an already established franchise art style.

*know how the ups/parent company might want something in a product which does not “fit” and then having others rationalize it to the customers…

First I thought this character was hilarious, but… that expression… I think maybe it wants to sneak up on me in the night and devour my soul. Or when it realizes the folly in that, my liver. Still, certainly among the more amusing charr I’ve run across. I think they must have been going for ‘expressive’ a la lolcats, but maybe didn’t put too much thought into what was being expressed…

Also, maybe it was just my imagination but she seemed to have a particularly competent combat AI for a GW2 NPC. Maybe not any smarter but using a decent selection of skills.

T_T …her eyelashes look about as proportional to her eyes as mine do and I had to google ‘mascara’. I think it’s that the eyes when related to her head are like some house-cats’ and the eyelashes in relation to her eyes are more human, so altogether it looks bizarre.

In other news, that weirdo devourer seems to have big eyes too. Went through the mission again on another character and compared it with some of the others at the end. So I guess that relationship suddenly makes more sense…
