Considering the majority of Charr are well-hardened soldiers, one would think they wouldn’t contract Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but could it happen to one who’s warband has died, seen their mate/cub killed, etc.

All the Charr who are unable to battle or aren’t skilled enough are often hauled into non-combat roles like farming, or are asked to become a Primus (Fahrar teacher), so there could be some hidden around the place that have PTSD, surely all of them can’t be soldiers who just took a bullet to the knee.

Anyone got any information or record of a Charr with PTSD-like features?

I figure Charr society is structured to marginalize and kill off anyone who gets PTSD quickly – they either end up thrown into the grinder of a battlefield, or tossed as one of the Gladium.

While we don’t see it, I think the Charr do value the people who do backline work. For example, some of the paperwork/office duty charr in the offices at the BC seem very proud of their work, and the Tribunes respect them.

I think if the person has use or skills still, the Charr would find a way to use them.

There’s a blood legion charr at brokentooth maw, near lowland burns who is constantly muttering depressing statements to himself and is seemingly oblivious to the rest of his warband.

It’d appear that the Charr are still susceptible to mental breakdown under enough pressure.

One aspect of Charr society that is not brought up much in the lore is life expectancy. The average Charr may not live long enough to experience PTSD. It also seems (here in America) that PTSD is only brought up when soldiers come home and have to adjust to a non-combat life. The Charr society has a plan for these people (ranchers, farmers, loggers, maybe even a pension lol) that seems to help.

I have a sword, a dagger, and an estimated life span of 2.47 seconds.

Generally warbands are trained for one profession and then remain in that profession their entire lives. In Plains of Ashford, there’s a lone gladium who was assigned to keeping a lake protected and clean as a source of drinking water. Over the years all his warband died, and now he’s the only one left, but he says he’ll continue doing his duty until the day he dies. (He does hope that the Black Citadel sends somebody to replace him so he can die with an easy mind though.)

On the other hand, in Iron Marches there’s an old female Charr in the fishing village who says she and her surviving bandmate moved here to become fishers after her bandmate was injured in a mining accident and could no longer work. They managed to get accepted into a new warband, although the injured bandmate basically can’t do any work at all and is living off the support from her old bandmate.

So it is possible for warbands or gladiums to change roles/industries completely, but I’d say it’s not very common.

Though PTSD is no doubt present in charr society it may not be as prevalent as we think. A big reason for PTSD is that the mentality of a battle hardened frontline soldier is incompatible with “normal” society. In charr society, those same qualities that encourage a warlike mentality are encouraged throughout charr society.

So a lot of the things that might cause PTSD in our present day human society would be counted as the norm. In ancient warrior cultures, PTSD is lessened by societies assurance to the warriors that whatever they did and saw is worthy of praise and that they deserve a heroes return.

I remember reading about the events of the Searing somewhere (sorry I know it is annoying when people can’t quote sources and I apologise in advance) and it said there was one war band who was scouting and realised Adelbern was gonna kill the approaching legions with Magdaer’s power and so they fled and were cursed as deserters but when they had survived and returned to their home (at that time it wasn’t the Black Citadel) and all their fur had gone white in shock. This may be slightly irrelevant but I find it interesting that the Charr could suffer from PTSD or shock and physically change as well.

Edit – Spell check

Quaggan finds your post inaccurate, wrong, misinformed, smelly and not as
good as Quaggan. Quaggan for President!

They attempted to warn the others about the attack (because Adelberns aide warned them before he died). IIRC, it was a label of coward, not deserter, and they were bound and left on ‘viewing hill’ outside of AC. When the Foefire hit, they were the only survivors that I know of.

I think Rox has PTSD, that’s why she’s so obsessed with good luck charms, and overly protective of Braham. After loosing her entire first warband in a mine collapse she’s affraid anyone she cares about is going to die.

Would make sense, perhaps a not as serious form of it then what you typically see.

That also explains her ‘battlefield magic’ as Marjory called it… besides being a ranger and that stuff is common for them, she may have went and learned a BUNCH of first aid/healing so that if somebody she cared for got hurt, she could heal them instead of being helpless.

Yeah, Rox obviously has some lingering PTSD/abandonment issues due to being the sole survivor of her first warband, but I like that about her. It gives her character.
