I liked them mostly for their animations which have so much more character than the other races in my opinion. And that their starting area and plot feels much more like it has a real conflict, as well as the unique aspect of the warbands sold it.
And hey, they’re huge beasts with horns and guns.

Because I didn’t want to be the meat or the salad.

It was a sequence of events. For starters I love cats and i love big chars. So at first I was like Ok I will be a norn, turn into a bear bla bla bla. Then I watched the first race trailer and Ritlock’s words just caught me.

“Your faith is you weakness human” < I would have said the same.

“Duty bla bla for the black citadel " <I love black, I love citadels, I honor my duties and I am a military person.

So the life style, technology, abuse of black and fire and the fact that they are militant and relay on their strength made me fall for the race. Also they got some of the most intense racial tier armor I seen.

I made Charr originally during the BWEs because I knew without a doubt I`d be playing Spinach, I mean Sylvari & wasn`t keen on the Charr (not sure if because played bit of GW1 or something…).

By the second BWE, that was it, I was hooked.
Charr animations, story lines, /threaten, confused jump sound (/huh)…
Having now seen Sylvari I can`t play one because it`s not Charr

I rolled 3 Charr, a Thief, a Warrior, and an Engineer, 1 to cover each of the Legions. i found in beta that the Charr had excellent storylines and supporting characters, in particular Rytlock and Dinky. I found the voice acting and lines when receiving boons to be enjoyable as a male Charr, and I liked the concept that I was building up a warband to support me. Not just casual friends I meet along the way + destiny’s edge member, but a band of brothers/sisters who have my back. They were with me in just about every story mission (until the orders anyway, that I didn’t know in beta, I thought they’d always be with me) unless I needed to be alone for some reason, even then, they waited for me just out of sight, ready to assist me if things went sour on my sneaky mission.

I also really enjoy the modern Charr culture, with its Imperial Rome meets age of enlightenment inspirations. I find the concept of the Charr being misotheists (God haters, not to be confused with atheists.. they know the Gods exist, but refuse to worship them and consider them to be foes to be opposed) to be fascinating, and love that they, while not totally abandoning magic, have created a society based on technology independent of magic, in a world filled with magic. Where the Asura blend magic and technology, the Charr build based entirely on scientific principle, and it has led to machines such as the airship and submarine, where the Asura would just assume transport instantaneously through gate.

Last but certainly not least, I find the Charr dialogue to be humorous and entertaining, as Charr engineers are working on new contraptions. “Note to self, cows appear to lose bowel control when launched – Let’s call it a feature!” “I’m not getting in that thing. ‘Why not?’ It was DESIGNED to SINK.”

Eh. Amusingly, misotheists is a common misconception. They don’t hate the gods, as that would actively mean that they’d be seeking out anything godlike and killing them. They’re far too pragmatic for hate of that ilk. In fact, if you can prove you’re no threat to the charr, then the charr are quite happy to buddy up with you, and even use their military to protect you. There are plenty of instances within the lore to support this.

No, it’s not hate. It’s more that they don’t recognise gods as gods. So atheism is a correct viewpoint. I mean, if a powerful being landed on earth tomorrow and claimed to be a god, would the atheists suddenly stop being atheists? No, they’d be incredibly sceptical and cynical, to a point that goes well beyond being merely ‘dubious.’ They’d still not accept that a god exists, that simply a powerful being exists that calls itself god.

That’s how the charr think. They believe that gods are an innately fallacious concepts, that a god is a false thing by its very nature. They recognise that powerful creatures exist, and they believe that if a powerful creature were to challenge them, they’d meet that challenge. Whether this creature calls itself a ‘god’ or not is irrelevant. A powerful being does not a god make. An atheist recognises this, a charr recognises this.

It wasn’t until I’d spent some time with the charr culture in game that I understood how they felt about it. And it is true atheism. It’s a show-me-a-god-and-I’ll-show-you-a-fool attitude. With the fool being the person willing to believe that a powerful creature is a ‘god.’

The charr believe that no creature exists which can constitute that which is commonly attributed to gods – such as omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, and so on. Therefore, if a being cannot be these things, gods cannot exist. Atheism. Nothing to do with hate.

To explain a little bit more…

Look at the grawl. The grawl will worship anything, they’ll call anything a ‘god.’ The charr are the stark opposite of this. A god basically means a creature which is attributed with creation, has some kind of sway over reality, and is deserving of reverence. The charr recognise that creatures exist which call themselves gods, but the charr do not believe that they are gods.

As I said, the charr see ‘god(s)’ as a fallacious concept, that such a thing doesn’t exist to their knowledge, and that to believe in it is to be taken advantage of by somewhat powerful flim-flam men. To be like the grawl, or like the humans, to be made weak by their faith (as Rytlock speaks of). The charr believe in being self-reliant, and reliant on the people you know you can trust. They put large amounts of importance upon interpersonal bonds.

Whereas other races build statues to their gods, or their avatars, or their spirits, the charr build statues of their heroes, and people worthy of note.

To understand charr atheism, you have to understand their world and culture. And I hope I’ve done something to shed some light upon both with this post. I am trying my best. But in the truest sense of atheism, the charr are atheists. They refuse to believe in anything that calls itself ‘god,’ and they don’t believe that anything can actually claim that title that exists.

Raised for battle from birth, their level of masculinity is so high that their beards are full body. The chin was not enough to contain the testosterone and it just sprouted everywhere. Just going into their city just screams “man”!
Also, rytlocks voice is so deep and manly its like he’s growing a second pair of testicles on his chin to contain all that “maniliness”.

I actually have two Charrs. I chose the race because back in another MMO I played there was a profession called Barbarian which was pretty much an animal hybrid with very limited character customizations. The profession was a male only profession, and I’m not to big on playing male characters since I’m female myself. I was super excited when Guild Wars 2 had female Charrs! Not only do I get to play a female character of a specific race I like now, but I get to customize her the way I want to as well.

I’ve toyed with that idea, too. It’ll be interesting, that’s for sure.

What I really want to see though is a charr space program. Reason? If magic really is bound to Tyria as the lore suggests, then moving to a reasonable distance away from Tyria actually detaches you from that magical source.

If the charr manage to build a weapons platform in high orbit which can’t be touched by magic, then… well, things will get really interesting.

That’s true of the Iron Legion, too. It’s only really the Blood Legion that buys into “macho BS,” but that’s due to Blood having the most stringent militaristic structure. If you look at most modern military institutions, especially from recent history, you’ll find a hell of a lot of that “maco BS.”

But yes, Iron and Ash are both varying leagues of progressive (Iron being mostly so), and as such that aforementioned “macho BS” isn’t an aspect of their culture. They’re much more easygoing.

I plan to play all 5 races, but what I like about the Charr is their no-nonsense nature and humour. It’s a refreshing change after playing Norn or Human and the constant praise of those characters right from the beginning. The music is more dark and foreboding around the starting area and Black Citadel compared with the other races, and the constant reminders of the past add to the atmosphere too.

I don’t usually enjoy warrior cultures in games but the Charr are capable of cracking a joke or two in between the posturing. Maybe I wouldn’t enjoy Blood so much, but Ash is fine.

Plus the Charr have Dinky.

Charr were what caught my interest to start GW2. I saw some concept art while randomly surfing internet, the day before the pre-sale play went live. Thought they looked cool. Checked out site and bought game.

What I like the most about the design of the race is that they are the most unique in the game as far as not being molded or drawn from a archetypal fantasy fiction/mythological/ or historical background. To me that allows for a better game experience because you are seeing it for what it is and not comparing it to this or that.

In game to me their animations and moments look the best. Their capital is cool, kinda like the deathstar meets steampunk…lol. As others have said the amount of customization you can do when you roll your character is better IMO.

Lastly, I’m a human in real life, why would I want to play one in my spare time?

I really loved the Charr in gw1, specially when we got to know them better in EotN. But I always loved how cuddly they look, so I definitely planned to play one in gw2.

I liked the Asura in gw1, thought they were funny and smart, but in gw2 I just want to kick them in the face. They’re so annoying.

I don’t like to play human-like characters, because males are too ugly and boring, and females are too kittenty and silly.

So the choice is Charr!
Female charr are amazing Very well done. But I don’t like the medium armor on them, it’s poorly done, so my scholars are charr. I don’t like mesmer or elementalist in any other race, but when I play them as charr, I really enjoy the game

Ranger and thief charr are a lot of fun to me too, but like I said, I don’t like the medium armor on charr.

I love their sense of humor and when my character speaks, it sounds like it could be me. When my other (non-charr) characters speak, it makes me want to shudder because it just sounds too silly.

Oh, where to start… I mean, I love them on so many levels. From their engineering and industrialization (esp. the Iron legion) to social values of efficiency to the apatheistic-ignostic basis of their ideology (outright rejecting the very notions of worship and godhood, regardless of the existence of ‘things’ that are ‘sufficiently powerful/advanced’) to simply having a snout and tail and their overall general looks, there are so many things that totally set them above the others.

Furthermore, the Charr are so very similar to many other fantasy-verse centerpiece races I’ve designed; so similar with one, in fact that aesthetics aside, they could be nearly interchangeable with it (the only major differences being in military structure, and in technology – specifically that the Charr don’t use radiothermo sources of heat (though that was all stemming from the plot…), they don’t use concrete (But thats pushing into aesthetics…), and don’t have wide-spread use of flying machines (There is one Charr who is trying to make a helicopter though, which makes them all that more similar, since that other race uses pretty much entirely helicopter-type aircraft))

I am a fan of art- and there are an incredibally low amount of anthropomorphic animals that I can tolerate; However, the Charr are extremely unique, unlike most MMOs and other popular drawings and concepts, they aren’t all about having large breasts, Even both genders of the race seemed well thought out and carefully designed. It’s easy to make an anthropomorphic animal, but it’s harder to make one that looks natural, has a fascinating cultural background, and actually doesn’t look like crap.

That and Charr in full heavy armor with a 2-hander is the most intimidating thing you could possibly have.
I also share very similar religious views, which is awesome.

Fun things to add to that:

  • Whilst their flying machines aren’t too widespread, they did prototype blimps and they’re using those. And anyone who’s familiar with charr aesthetics is going to recognise and appreciate the vast amounts ‘charr’ in those blimp aesthetics. Man, I love those blimps.
  • Once the charr have prototyped something enough, it goes into mass production. So eventually that one guy working on helicopters is going to give the charr a vast armada of them.
  • There’s a charr in the Imperator’s Core who has some very clever ideas of the widespread applications of electricity to replace other sources of power. (If you consider that they could likely use the plutonium-like properties of oozes to generate electricity, this could happen soon for them.)
  • They’re already fiddling with very basic radiowave technology, and that’s likely powered (if crudely) by electricity. They’d need that to remotely detonate their mines.

So basically… they’re on the precipice of all sorts of forms of advancement.
