Title pretty much says it all. I assume if you are here, you rolled a Charr. If not, why are you here, and why are you not a Charr? Was there a reason, or did you just make one of each class?

I picked Charr because I was extremely interested in what happened post-Ascalon between them and the humans. It’s interesting seeing what used to be a bitter enemy become a very real protagonist. Their home city also seemed the most interesting to me (next to the Asurans), because I liked the very industrial feel. Plus, I love the way they run on all fours. So kitten.

So what are your reasons?

Charr are one of the more unique races in the game. I enjoy the Charr lore and history from the first Guild Wars game. They are also the unofficial mascot of ArenaNet and Guild Wars 2.

I rolled charr because I pretty much love everything about them.

I’ve always been a cat person so the caught my eye back in GW1, but as more lore was revealed — particularly in EotN — I found myself getting more and more hooked. And once Ecology of the Charr was posted on the GW1 wiki, that was it — charr became my favourite fantasy race.

Here’s a race that was oppressed and enslaved by some of their own (and arguably regressed during that time) and overcame that and the civil war that’s been raging since, that has been at war on multiple fronts with other races, and is still alive and kicking. Not only that, they live in a world where magic and gods exist yet they eschew using magic and worshipping anything after the titans and have become the most purely technologically advanced race in Tyria. All in less than 250 years and with constant wars.

I also love how pragmatic charr are. Age and gender doesn’t matter as long as you’re capable of doing something. And if you were to dare to insinuate a femcharr is any less than a male charr, odds are you’re going to end up in a lot of pain, if you live long enough to see the sun rise.

A casual glance at charr may make it seem like they’re a brutal, warmongering race who don’t care about anything other than victory, but underneath that there’s some core values which run deep and strong. Blood only determines your genes — the people you fight beside, see live and die, and the friendships you forge are what makes up your family. War is bloody and violent yet it still has rules — if you cross the line from honourable to spineless your life is forfeit to the point where your own people may very well turn their backs on you. The good of the many is more important than any one individual, and loyalty is something not to be betrayed or exploited, to name some.

Charr also live life well and seem to have a wicked sense of humour, so when they aren’t on duty (and sometimes if they are) they seem like blokes who would be great to hang out and have a drink with. Or shoot the breeze with, end up getting into a hairy situation, then laughing about it when it’s over.

Definitely my kind of race.

I wasn’t interested in the Charr too much but started reading Edge of Destiny in the weeks before launch. I generally don’t go for brutish races, but Rytlock’s characterization helped me appreciate how mufti-faceted Charr could be. A few levels of the Iron Legion storyline and I was hooked.

I like the Klingons in Star Trek, though I don’t like the Orcs in WoW, but I love the Charr’s take on life.
They basically killed their so-called gods, ate them, and pooped out an Industrial Revolution.

That is awesome to me. I loved the Rytlock statue in my CE box. Also I was going to play every race anyways. So a warrior and Engineer Charr was perfect!

Simple one, this.

I like their lore. They’ve gone through a lot, they’ve had their lands stolen from them, they’ve been enslaved, but they’ve come through it all. And currently, their society is built upon a system of equality within their race (even true gender equality), and upon believing in each other.

The warband is a system which has stronger bonds than most familial ones. And as such, the charr personal storyline is very much about people. I think it’s because of this that the writing is pretty great across the board. And you have warband members who’re simply precious, like Dinky (thekitten and Maverick (the Duke Nukem wannabe).

And beyond that, you have shining examples like Tybalt Leftpaw. Now there’s a character to look up to. I’m sorry, but I’m absolutely in love with Tybalt. It was him that changed my decision of Order for my first character from Vigil to Whispers.

So I think ultimately it comes down to writing? I think that’s what I’m trying to say?

The charr may look beastly, but whomever was responsible for writing their characters has created some really memorable characters, characters which invoke feels. And if anything were to ever happen to Dinky, I’d maul them. I would literally track down the writer and maul them. Because (SPOILERS) what they did to poor Tybalt was bad enough. Snif.

That I’m that attached to characters speaks volumes.

I didn’t get that attachment from any of the other races. And it’s this that’s made GW2 so much more palatable for me than any other MMORPG I’d played previously.

Edit—

Because charr are awesome and they have Dinky.

High-five! There really needs to be a Dinky fanclub. :P

Edit—

After reading above, it occurs to me that I also forgot to mention their technological advances. But not only that, they’re legit. I mean, the asura are great, but they’re kind of like script kiddies. They use magic that pretends to be technology. It’s interesting, but the asura story proves time and again that the asura really don’t know what they’re doing.

Whereas everything that the charr prototype is so reliable that they can roll it out into production throughout their factories (and they have a lot of those). So they don’t worship gods, they don’t use magic in their tech, they mine their own materials, they prototype based upon pure sciences, and the end result is something that they have truly created.

They’re legit, and truly an icon of self-dependence. They feel… it’s hard to explain, but there’s a confidence to them. It’s like… to heck with this world, we’re doing things our way. It’s a confidence that I admire.

They were the race that I was the most interested in, and I felt the most unique and well-written. In addition to being aesthetically interesting. I suppose you could make the argument that any of the GW2 races fall into fantasy stereotypes, but I think the Charr do this the least. The racial abilities caught my attention too. A rocket launcher? Artillery support? Beats the hell out of a werewolf “spirit” form or becoming a tree.

Plus Rytlock is awesome. Screw Logan, he’s such a whiny kitten.

I originally chose a Charr as my main because I REALLY liked the look of them- My main toons on WoW were a Tauren and Worgen respectively, so you can see a pattern. But I’ve absolutely fallen in love with their lore, which is funny, because the Antitheist, Militaristic, Pragmatic society is decidedly opposed to my real values. Though, seeing what they’ve gone through, how they’ve suffered, and how they’re fighting back makes me not only want to root for them, but jump right out into the battlefield with them.

I love lore in general, and I love charr because I wanted to know more about them in GW1. They’ve done so much for themselves since then, and they’re determined to hang on to what they have, and SO stubborn they just might manage to do it. XD (Seriously, who takes over land haunted by respawning ghosts and says “don’t care, ours anyway”? The charr, that’s who.)
