Why do Charrs have horns?
theme-wise, A-net said they were inspired by the idea of demon-cats. so they fit the demon-cat theme. lore-wise, it could be a myriad of reasons. natural adaptation for defense and offense since they are so aggresive/cosmetic appeal for mating rituals/a sign of nutritional health in prospective mates/etc. We don’t have any confirmation on charr origins so we really don’t know.
Like our own adaptations, it may be a variety of reasons. it may have started as a practicle thing and developed into and from a cultural thing. And in war, that cultural thing would still have practicle applications. Which would explain the variety of horn styles.

When arenanet designed the charr, they were going for fire demons with cat features. So the horns come from being fire demons
evolutionarily speaking, traditionally animals who have horns/tusks is because they either a) use them for digging or finding food via sensitive hairs etc. etc. or b) they use them in mating rituals/duels.
Seeing as the Char have opposable thumbs i would go with B.
Beacuse they’re cool.
Next question!
Natural Selection. Then possibly sexual selection (bigger horns may be sexier).
So we can impale Asura on them and eat them for dinner later.
oh no...no Asura stew, they are mostly bones, skin and tendons and what meat you can find, isn’t worth the trouble. I’d suggest either crab or even Grawl......heck, i’d eat Risen over Asura.....
We have horns because we are demon cats who kill gods.
Because if I could overthrow gods with technology I’d want horns.
Probably reason most animals have horns, for fighting.
They were probably originally a social symbol. A charr with bigger horns that you will probably be stronger than you, so it’s best NOT to pick a fight with them unless you have to. While this is probably less effective now the Charr have guns and swords, which can even out differences in physical strength. It probably still subconsciously helps keep brawling down to an acceptable limit by discouraging lower ranked charr from challenging their superiors.
“Animals have a variety of uses for horns and antlers, including defending themselves from predators and fighting members of their own species for territory, dominance or mating priority. Horns are usually present only in males but in some species, females too may possess horns. It has been theorized by researchers that taller species living in the open are more visible from longer distances and more likely to benefit from horns to defend themselves against predators. Female bovids that are not hidden from predators due to their large size or open Savannah like habitat are more likely to bear horns than small or camouflaged species.6
In addition, horns may be used to root in the soil or strip bark from trees. In animal courtship many use horns in displays. For example, the male blue wildebeest reams the bark and branches of trees to impress the female and lure her into his territory. Some animals with true horns use them for cooling. The blood vessels in the bony core allow the horns to function as a radiator.”

There’s actually plenty of functional reasons for horns! While Charr are not “prey” in the typical sense, everything from harpies to hyenas could be considered a potential predator. I like the horns because they draw away from the cat theme. Instead of just being cats on their hind legs, they come across more as a species all of their own.

I couldn’t have said it better.
