Hi there! I want to make a ranger but I’m not sure which race to make it. I absolutely hate Asura, they’re just little balls of ego, Norn males look fat rather than muscular, I really love Sylvari, but I already have 2 of them. And I also already have a human (and frankly I don’t like the human male hairstyles). So that leaves Charr. But does a Charr ranger make sense? If so what legion would they be in? And don’t pets look weird with Charrs? I mean it’s an animal that has another animal as a pet. Thanks for your help!

Charr rangers absolutely fit lore. Charr NPC’s raise scorpids for combat. Rangers would be beneficial as scouts for any legion.

I think Charr is actually one of the best fits for Ranger “lore wise”. Charr NPCs frequently use animals in a good handful of different ways (some are used as pack animals for transporting goods, some as utility animals for digging or other labor, and others as war beasts specifically for combat). And its not just a few Charr that do that, there are multiple instances of it, to the point where there are entire facilities dedicated entirely to raising and training animals.

Legion-wise, I think any legion would work fine, but I’d say Blood Legion would probably be the “best” fit since its Blood Legion that tends to train animals for combat more often (at least from what I’ve noticed).

As for pets being with because the Charr are “animals”… they aren’t really. They have animalistic qualities to their appearance, but they’re fully intelligent, sentient beings. And personally, I think running on all fours, side-by-side with your pet looks really cool, besides.

Charr ranger you say?

Charr, since back in GW1, were usually shown having trained devourers at their service, so of course having pets wouldn’t look strange for Charr. A Charr hero in GW1 was even a ranger, Pyre Fierceshot. As for Legion, either Ash or Blood would make the most sense thematically. I personally chose Blood only because my other Charr was already in Ash.

Charr train cattle for battle. And there is a cattle trainer teaching the quaggan how to train crabs for ranching.

Not to mention one of the Living Story main characters, Rox, is a charr ranger in the Blood Legion.

Wasn’t there a heart in Ashford Plains that was all about gathering Devourer Eggs?

If I remember right, the older Charr teaching the cubs was Iron Legion, so I don’t think it would really matter much. If you really are into lore, it would be better if you thought about other qualities you want your Charr to have, like how Blood Legion are more straightforward, Iron Legion are innovative and Ash Legion prefer discretion.

Depends on the Charr mentality. For example, Rytlock’s assistant is surprised at seeing an Asura ranger running about Black Citadel and if memory serves right, compliments your pet. Blood Legion can value pets and the talents of a ranger as a means of fire support and combat with greater agility, while the talents of a ranger might be valued more for subtlety and lone-ranger work in Ash Legion. Not so sure about Iron Legion, I’d assume they would view pets as liabilities considering all the grinding gears and dangerous machinery around just waiting to snatch up and jam itself on the sticky remains of your squished pet, and Iron Legion would probably shy away from bows unless they were some kind of high-tech precision bow developed of blood, tar and ghost tears.

Those, of course, are assumptions. I’m sure more than one Iron Legion cub has flipped the Khan to the road oft travelled and grabbed his quiver to get out there and range.

Charr could absolutely be rangers. We know for a fact that the Blood Legion makes more use of warbeasts than any other legion (probably because Iron Legion has their tanks and Ash Legion prefer subtlety, so pets might ruin that), so Rangers could easily find a place there as beast tamers or animal handlers. Rangers also make good frontline scouts, which are useful to any Legion, but more so for Ash Legion given their emphasis on stealth and reconnaissance.

Honestly, when I think of classes for the Blood and Ash Legions, Ranger comes second on both lists after Warrior and Thief respectively. Blood because WARBEASTS YEAH, and Ash for their role as trackers and scouts. Only Iron Legion seems like a poor fit, and even then I can come up with a few scenarios. Iron Legion probably employs more drovers than all the other Legions combined, what with all that heavy gear and artillery, and it’s inevitable that some of them will notice that a Pack Siamoth is good for more than just hauling loads. A miner on one of the dozens of crews meeting the Legion’s immense demands for raw ore befriends a Cave Spider. A cub gets put in an Iron Fahrar because that was his parent’s legion, but displays no particular aptitude for engineering, preferring to play with the wild Moas and Hyenas near the barracks.

The thing about the Legions is that they all try to maintain self-sufficiency to some degree. Blood and Ash have technicians. Ash and Iron have front-line soldiers. Iron and Blood have scouts and covert operatives. Each Legion has a specialty, but none of them are willing to rely 100% on the others, so you can ultimately make a case for any class in any Legion, even if it’s in tiny numbers.

Former Guild Wars 2 fan. RIP, ArenaNet’s integrity.

Two words, Pyre Fierceshot.
The greatest hero of the Charr revolution when they threw off the rule of the flame legion, Pyre was a ranger.

Of course they fit. Only thing that talks against them is using “nature magic”, but you may close your eye on it. Ranger fits.
