I got to 400 LW/JC using http://pwniversity.com/category/gw2-crafting-guides
It was about 10g each but got about 3g back so around 7-8g.

10g each that seems extremely excessive, Last time I leveled something like armor or a weaponsmithing it was only 3-4g tops. www.gw2wiz.com is the most widely know guide.
The method Ive found to be the best is refine mats for 25 points when you reach those points sell those items back to the Trading Post. Majority of the time its cheaper to buy the pieces to make discoveries than it is to actually craft them, it takes 9 discoveries to reach a bracket, then 14 more discoveries to finish the Tier. I can’t stress enough use buy orders you will save extreme amounts even thou it may take a bit longer to wait on your orders to fill but save you gold in the long run.

What it costs you to raise a craft depends entirely on how much you want to work at it. I generally make money raising a craft, not spend it. But I compare the costs to make components over buying them, look for bargains, and almost always buy materials and components using offers. I also figure the total cost to make things, and try to make the most profitable or least costly items. I also make items for sale as I level up — the yellow (rare) items that you make with karma-purchased inscription/insignia recipes can be profitable if you’re careful.
