A GW 2 noob needing help...
1.) Collecting materials would be grindy. Buying them on trading post obviously isn’t. How long it takes you depends on how much you can spend (it’s rather expensive, either in amount paid for materials or amount not made from selling materials, to get a craft to 400 or 500). The crafting itself is reasonably quick. You can max a craft in less than an hour if you know what you need to do (follow a guide or something) and have your materials handy.
2.) Certainly not a must, unless you’re going for a legendary weapon (that’ll require you to max out one craft). It’s the only reasonable way to get ascended weapons, but those are still potentially available as very rare drops. You can get exotic weapons and armor etc. elsewhere… they’re all the same quality, it’s just a question of getting the right stat combination you want.
3.) You can buy most items on the trading post (including items others have crafted). You can get some from laurels collected from daily/monthly achievements. You can buy them with karma. You can buy them with tokens gained from running dungeons. The standard NPC weaponsmith/armorsmith merchants will not sell anything useful (they only sell the lowest rarity, white, which isn’t worth using) but karma vendors have useful items. It’s just a matter of finding stuff that’s level appropriate and has the right stat combination.

1.) If you have the gold, you can get to lvl 400 in under an hour. It’s not a grind if you use guides. It is a grind if you don’t know what you’re doing and keep leveling off lower-level crafts.
2.) Crafting is not necessary unless you want a quick way to get ascended weapons. You can get armors off the TP for very cheap or you can get them for dungeon tokens, karma or WvW badges. You can also get ascended weapons as a rare drop. Legendary weapons can be bought off the TP
3.) See above

You don’t have to craft to reach max level or have the best gear, it’s just a side feature that some enjoy. However if you would like to craft Ascended or legendary weapons, its something your going to have to do, but that shouldn’t be hard if you do 100% map completion.
Oh ok, I think this cleared up something.
Hi,
I’m completely new to this game and I would have some common questions about crafting.
1. Is crafting here in GW 2 a huge grind? I’d like to craft some stuff but I have pretty bad experiencies about very grindy crafting systems in some other MMOs.2. Also, is it a must to craft in GW 2? For example I think I’m going to make my own armour and jewelry, are crafted items significantly better compared to umm let’s say armour pieces u can purchase from merchants? Can u play well without crafted items?
3. If I won’t craft my armour and/or jewelry, is there other ways to obtain armour? If so, which ways? Will it become expensive?
Yeah, I think there was all I wanna know. Peace.

No need to craft, you can become perfectly rich without. In fact, crafting is boring and, I think I might be acting redundant, quite grindy. It sucks the fun out of the game if crafting is all you try to do/think about. Go have fun! Embrace your freedom from typical MMO structure. Buy it a nice dinner, get to know it’s parents. Don’t worry, that shotgun isn’t loaded.
Yeah, there are other ways. You can buy or find ’em or GRINDGRINDGRIND for them in dungeons.
