A type of gathering I miss
I pretty much would never miss this type of gathering, or any gathering. If they do implemented though, I would just do what I do on WoW and ignore it.
You do get meat and leather from animals and metal scraps from watchwork and other machine-ish creatures.
So … you want more things that are only good for selling to vendors?

Uh, seeing how this is the crafting sub-forum I think it’s a safe bet OP wants more crafting materials for crafting purposes.
I think I repressed those memories.
Spider silk, elemental materials, certain recipes… shudders
“Tarnished Coast” since head start!
“Hey guys, why did we fail his event?”
“Um, sorry about that. While you were fighting those risen we were collecting spider glands and wraith essence from the pile of corpses over here. The abomination toenails sell for 42 copper each you know!”
I get plenty of crafting and salvage items from enemies so I’m not sure what the OP is talking about.
Seriously don’t want to be mean, but I do NOT want aspects of WoW becoming parts of GW2. Sounds like some WoW vets chiming in to vote, “NO”, so that makes me relax a bit.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances

Wow so many haters, and all I was asking for was that DR not be a factor in crafting materials that drop from mobs. is it any wonder people talk bad about this community?

If you’re not sure what OP is talking about, then I’ll break it down for you. Say you need cloth or leather.
– You run around killing enemies.
– You hope RNG favors you enough to give you the appropriate salvage item.
– Or you hope RNG favors you enough to give you a loot bag.
– Then you hope RNG favors you enough to give you the desired items from said bag.
Meanwhile, I – someone who needs metal or lumber – simply run from node to node to node. I get a ton of ore in a fraction of the time it takes you to get cloth scraps.

Just because it’s used in WoW doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea for Guild Wars 2. Or do you not want mining, harvesting, crafting, auction houses, etc, in GW2?
I miss skinning mobs after I’ve killed them (Warcraft) and picking cotton from the bush (Age of Conan). Mining the remains of elementals was fun too.
I know what you mean. WoW did have an interesting feel for gathering exlusive materials to create something which as also exlusive. then I remember trying to horde all those items in my bank encase I needed them XD

Looting takes 1 button press to loot an entire pile of corpses.

No such thing as exclusive in a game played by hundreds of thousands of people(possibly millions). You aren’t going to be any more special than those other thousands of people with exactly the same thing. A MMO seems like the last place to look for that sort of thing.

yep about 50% is cutoff due to DR. I played headstart it wasn’t there prior to Nov 2012.
Not to mention that right now AOE loot is borked in this game.
Also, if you had a skill like tailoring in WoW you could collect extra cloth. That’s what I found useful! I would so love them to do that based a bit off class as well. Engineers would be able to pickup parts from bots and salvage them. Those were the days.

^^ this!
Many of the ui basics that are considered standard are because WoW adopted them making them more visible to a wider audience.
This isn’t a WoW thread per say but alot of people who come from WoW play GW2. It’s just natural that we’d expect to see certain things as a standard ui feature in the game because they were quality of life improvements.
But we DO get Gem / Jewelry mats from slaying elementals. Also from Imps.
OP does make a great point though about Plant enemies (and Nightmare Court)…
We should definitely be getting herbs from Plant mobs. ….just try not to think too much about what part of their body that Parsnip and Truffles came from.

Actually the OP talked about skinning hides and such and when I’ve seen that in other games it took time for each individual corpse to be skinned one by one. Another draw back is that all the corpses stay on the screen just in case you do want to skin them one by one for crafting junk.

Attempting to eat the Nightmare Court would probably kill you and they are hardly interchangeable with herbs or any of the other cooking ingredients.
Actually the only thing that counts as plants are the various *hearts(oak, willow,…) so you would be eating planks of wood.
WoW gives you the option of gathering items yourself, (spiders silk/elemental essences) where as GW2 only gives you the option to buy them. Sure you can spend all day trying to get lodestones and you may end up with 1 or 2, thats why people find exploit farms(lyssa) because everything about this game is making gold to buy what you need. I would rather have the option to go out and kill monsters for their drops than burn my eyes out in a zerg train in frostgorge.

That’s exactly my point, we shouldn’t be so utterly dependant on gold for everything. The issue is being compounded by DR because these things are treated as regular drops. It’s the age old problem with games working only with RNG for everything. Since when do animals not drop meat or leather for example. I hope that they listen to this if they are truly interested in collaborating because I’d rather have the option of skinning one by one to get the true number of materials needed than go farm a dungeon path all day to get enough gold to buy the items in the TP.

None of those are exclusive to WoW and like I mentioned, many WoW vets seem to hate the OPs idea….good enough for me.

and what do you think would be the value of an item that drops at a higher rate than junk loot?
Now that I think about it, we do need some recipes that use Sylvari parts…

No one said the drop rate is 100%. Its just easier and more enjoyable/rewarding for some people to gather their own mats for crafting. I was just stating it would be nice to have the option, but you’re right. People who used exploits have their legendary already and control the trading post. Now their “end game” is making gold.
Edit to add. Just because you COULD farm those items yourself, didn’t mean the prices dropped, it meant you could sell them at a high rate, or save them for crafting. MOst people would rather buy them off the AH at ridiculous prices than farm them. Its about having the option!

Personally, I also agree with the fact that I would like WoW gameplay elements to stay the f out of GW2 regardless of how much innovation that would take. I would rather that the GW2 team in charge of this maybe create an alternative to this to ease it for players who just… like it easier? But not without a poll beforehand, to check if the majority actually want this. Sadly however, from my experience with MMORPGs, what the majority wants is not ALWAYS good for the sales long-term. From what I’ve noticed, people that have been with the MMORPG genre for a long time (and could be comfortable referred to as Veterans of the genre) and are the likeliest to stick to games of such kind longer, always seek out new things from MMORPGs even if it’s not to facilitate things as much as possible.
Personally I don’t mind some professions being harder than others, because it simply makes the crafting result be more valuable, or more prestigious alongside being more challenging for people who don’t really like the easy way in their gaming path. In other words, a profession might be different and slower in its kin, but it provides variety. Variety is essential because we don’t all seek the same from the game.
I think the path of “need item a → go farm item a” is much more satisfying than “need item a → go do x and then buy item a” where x is whatever the highest gold per hour activity currently happens to be. Unfortunately in gw2 the latter path is vastly more time efficient.

If it were more efficient to farm item a than to do x and buy a, the price of a would drop as people farmed it until it is more efficient to do x.
I miss the type of gathering where you could mine nodes and then craft something without having to also get an excessive number of rare drops which you then have to blowup all in order to craft 1 single item. It pretty much defeats the entire purpose of crafting.

The General Discussion has been on fire since Anet introduced that to GW2 (hint: Ascended)
