$10000 question, who has farmed for the Abyss Dye via creating Unidentified Gray Dye (Rare) and actually was lucky enough to receive it? How long did it take you? How many tries?

Initially, my goal was to create these until I received Abyss and while I can afford to buy it from the TP, I just can’t justify the cost for just a dye. Unfortunately the random chance of getting it seems to make this whole practice a waste of time.

It seems to me that the ingredients and effort required to make the Unidentified Gray Dye (Rare) is outweighed by the fact that it most often still just drops common dyes. I would love to see a change that with every tier you move up ( Unidentified Gray Dye (Rare), Unidentified Gray Dye (master), it will remove the lowest tier from the previous. I.E if you craft a rare spectrum dye (uncommon-rare) or master spectrum (common-master), etc.

So if you sought out to obtain Abyss Dye via Unidentified Gray Dye (Rare), let us know how it turned out for you.

I have only ever crafted 1 Unidentified Grey Dye (rare) – I just don’t spend enough time in areas that can drop Coriander Seeds.

That one I did craft gave me Celestial Dye. …I figured it’s pretty much all down hill from there.

It’s like 1.25g per craft just on coriander. Unless you’re feeling really lucky I wouldn’t try it.

I think you have a better chance at buying Rare dyes and throwing them in the forge, as that way you’ll always get a rare back and Abyss has just as much chance to come back as any other rare dye, it’s not like Dusk, whereas it’s a rare item. It’s just a colored dye made valuable by the market because everyone wants black.

Not a bad suggestion! At least I am trading rares for rares instead of using mats for a rare which often results in a common. These dye kits need to be reworked or just removed from the game.

At nearly 2g per try and at best a 1.22% chance of getting that dye assuming the chance of getting any rare dye is the same. However the real chance is definitely lower than that since you can also end up with a common or uncommon dye from the Unidentified Gray Dye(rare).

I’ve done this multiple times. Coriander is actually pretty easy to come by right outside of LA. Anyways 1st try I got a celestial dye, then the next 6 were all common grey dyes. Since the opportunity cost of each gamble is effectively 2g ish…the profit gained by highly demanded dyes will most likely be negated by failed gambles.

I received an abyss on my first attempt at crafting the Unidentified Gray Dye. I have since crafted 10 more which resulted in all low level dyes.

As others have mentioned, in hindsight it really wasn’t/isn’t worth the gamble.

Yes it is. With your rationale, all other rare dyes should be 22G. But other dyes don’t have nearly as much demand as Abyss and the price reflects that.

Now you’re agreeing with what I said. All Rare dyes are created equal and have the same drop rate. Only Abyss is valued way more due to demand, e.g. the market, because everyone wants black.

tried 30 times just to see, keep in mind that it has a chance to give you anything with a grey tint, I received a number of blues purples and greens. Far many more than the “grey hue” in the dye organization

i got Unidentified Gray Dye(Rare) from BL chest and i opened it and got abyss dye .. that’s was my 1st try on Unidentified Gray Dye(Rare)

The results don’t really look promising. I originally embarked on this journey based on the wiki page,

Based on that page I would have a 1/29 chance at it but as it turns out dye colors have dropped for me which are not even in the grey spectrum list. It almost seems as though it has a chance to drop any dye regardless of the color spectrum. Working as intended?

i did the same thing.. bought 4 rares from the TP, put them in the forge and blow me dead.. Abyss dye on the first go.. could have sold it for 17g but i consumed it instead..

decided to do it 4 more times, to see if i can get it again.. even though i didnt, i received white gold, white and hot pink and netting myself a nice little profit

No, it’s a stupid bug never fixed by lazyness of Anet. Pure pathetic nonesense craft a unid grey dye and get other colors out of grey spectrum. Reason because i never wasted my time to craft one until fixed

I think i managed to craft an unidentified gray dye. And ended up getting just a common dye.

So no i would not suggest to craft them.
And also coriander seeds are too expensive…or whatever it is called.

Collect enough Coriander for an Unid Gray… Get Icing. Buy more for another… Get Abyss.

Open 1 normal Unid dye… Celestial.

But no, RNG is RNG, I wouldn’t craft rare unid gray dyes ever again…

Crafting Rare Grays is big league, randoms should steer clear.

I did the same thing, but even had I known how expensive it would get, I still would have used it. I wanted black and thought “eh, Abyss is probably close enough until I can afford black”. Then I saw actual black dye and love my abyss.

I am addicted to dyes because it’s almost similar to gambling. If you get lucky you get gold which you can turn into gems. Once I tried getting the unidentified dye and first attempt got abyss. I have spent countless laurels on dye to get it again. No luck. I read this thread and saw someone say basically you have a better chance at the mystic toilet. I tried…and got Abyss again. Going to start opening dyes on other characters of mine when I get 5 laurels and see if I can do it again. Waste of time? Yes but it’s the thrill of actually getting a rare that ends up getting you 10 + gold that makes it fun.

I got one early on from a regular unidentified dye. Early as in like 3g. I used it of course since I wanted black. Sucks since I deleted that character xD.

As for crafting them, I’d considered it for when I get around to finishing off that alt’s craft profession(s), but now that I’ve read this I think I’ll skip it. Not going to go through the effort of crafting ‘grey dye’ if they haven’t even bothered to keep the results to grey dyes.

I crafted 2x unidentified gray dye (rare) and got… 2 common quality dyes. This shouldn’t even happen, because of the cost of materials.
