Do you have to do fractals to craft an ascended back piece? Every recipie I have been able to find needs at least some drops in fractals that I cannot buy on the TP.

Yes that’s correct. The recipes require a vial. A random drop from fractals. Or you can save fractal relics and buy one. The only other ascended back in the game was the tentacle thing from the Karka event that could be upgraded to ascended, but it has settler stats only.
