Ascended Crafting & the great Laurel Timegate
Yeah, the whole process stinks imo.
I have 9 characters that I’m supposed to gear out and you’re pretty much locked in once you chose your gear.
It’s why i’m not bothering with ascended armour.
80 Ranger (3), 80 Warrior (3), 80 Thief (3)
80 Ele (2), 80 Engi (3), 80 Rev (2)
The problem as I see it is the cost in Laurels to craft said Items.
Ummm, no laurels are required to craft Ascended armor or weapons.

The recipes cost 5 laurels for each piece of armor/weapon.

You have to buy the recipes from the NPC for the ascended weapons and armor. Each one is 5 laurels each. Armorsmith, Tailor, and Leatherworker: 30 laurels each for a full suit. So 90 laurels if you want to outfit one of each weight class.
In addition, if I want to craft every weapon for all my 8 level 80s, just for Weaponsmith it will cost me 40 laurels. Then there is Articifer, 20 laurels. Huntsman, 35 laurels. That’s 95 laurels for all weapons.

That’s the bare minimum for ONE stat allocation … Rabid for instance.
now multiply that times the 20 various stat allocations currently in game.
so 185 laurels for all armors / weapons x 20 … so 3700 laurels even a tenth of this at 370 laurels is way to much to ask from each and every person not to mention all the other costs … (silk / linen / wool anyone?) … lol

I’m pretty sure the stat allocations are karma, specifically 21k karma each. Once you buy the basic armor/weapon type with laurels, to make another with a different stat allocation requires another Recipe: Ascended Insignia. Once you buy one you have the option to select the stats.
Having crafted 3 full ascended suits already .. Thats not how it works.
You have to spend laurels for the second suit but you are correct I can purchase all the insignia recipes with Karma.
Just cant make the armor with just an insignia.
2 heavy one zerk one sentinel and a celestial cloth suit.
couple pieces for other suits as well …. so Astral you should check again.

Well, that’s dumb, for want of a better word. I haven’t tried to make any weapons with different stats.
huh, insignia recipes bought with Karma?

Yup, 21k a pop.
What I find to be funny is that they want to expand into gear other than Zerk.
Then they time gate us on the ability to make suits that wont bind on to a character.
That being said .. Zerk heavy was first then Celestial cloth, Sentinels Heavy was my third but only because I want to pvp on my warrior and my guard.
The next two will be Zerk Leather and Zerk cloth but it kinda makes me sad because I was hoping to experiment with some Dire/rabid/Zealots cloth and leather but its rapidly moving to the end of the list of things to spend my laurels on.
Looks like the Wiki was last edited in Feb ‘14. I surely haven’t seen an ascended armor recipe karma vendor, but with 2 million karma I’d be the first to say thankies if you actually found one
Foolishly spent 60 laurels on infusions for my first set of ascended trinks and armor.
Lesson learned? Don’t waste laurels on infusions until you’ve finished making everything else. They give small return for a very hefty cost.

You can make about 40 laurels per month. I’ve made a full set of heavy armor and about 5 weapons and if Laurels are the only thing holding you back, then I salute you.
For me, it’s usually Dragonite/Empy.
While you could make weapons and armor for every character, you might consider the flexibility of them being account bound and start with the items you can use on your favorite characters. It’s mildly inconvenient to move the gear around but as long as you’re not doing it every hour or so, it’s not bad.

I bought mine from the master tailor in LA before LA was destroyed.

Should be able to get them from other master tailors, armorsmiths, and leatherworkers. Just the insignia are karma purchasable.
Sadly the actual armor components require laurels.

main is a ranger with shortbow/GS
2nd necro with daggers/staff
3rd warr with hammer/rifle
None can share armours or weapons so that means 3 full sets of armour and at least 6 weapons, possibley 10 as ranger also uses axe/torch/warhorn and longbow depending on stituation.
However for me personally I will not be making any more acsended, as it took best part of 2 weeks just to make my rangers top,
I run all pink and purple gear on my main, but I don’t play my other level 80s enough to worry about it too much.
It’s nice to have all the crafting disciplines leveled as some items can be made cheaper with Elonian Leather than they can with Damask or DSteel.
I’ll probably make the mace and trident I still need for my Guardian and then slowly make primary weapons for the others as I acquire the materials
I would argue that they just need to remove the need to actually craft ascended and allow them to be gotten in PvP dungeon quests where you get tickets to get whatever piece you want and drop frequently (again ticket based to get stats you want) far more regularly in WvW.
Crafting should be quite optional OR ascended gear should be salable at quite reasonable prices.
Ideally, both.

Well, Ascended gear is already optional.. so…….

considering he is making those claims, do you really think he cares about the truth? Logic isn’t going to work on him, you might as well leave him to his own devices.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
I’m less concerned about the laurel timegate as I am about the “special Ascended piece” timegate that won’t let me craft more than one every 24 hours.
It wasn’t fun in WoW, and it’s not fun here.

He is just asking for better options in acquiring the gear, no need to jump all over him. Especially seeing as he is correct.
