These are my reasons for why I believe Ascended crafting was a bad move on Anet’s behalf.

1)Required the need for each crafting profession
Now everyone who wants 3 geared, different-armor/weapon types must level the crafting professions to 500. First off, many people don’t feel the need to level more than 1 or 2 professions and now they need to go out of their way to do so. Crafting isn’t enjoyable and it doesn’t necessarily show that you are ready for the content that the gear is being crafted for. It also led to my second point

2)Hurt the trading post
I used to make money each day on the trading post by crafting farmed materials, many others did as well. There was a consistent need for what I was crafting. Now, not only is the trading post completely saturated with exotics, but not as many people will need to buy exotics because they will have to level up crafting anyways. There isn’t much to craft and sell on the trading post for profit, and more people are going to these few routes to make money

3)Same process as exotic armor
There is no progression for Ascended gear, there should be. It gives people the ability to learn as they are earning their gear such that they will be prepared for the content that they are getting the armor for. The only progression is marked by the crafting level and the gold acquired whether it be from in-game or gem purchases. Yes, there are the account bound ascended materials but I never really found myself challenged to get them, no more than getting the materials for exotics.

What I think could’ve been done
Implement it into the “end game” content with an aspect of it, created from crafting; for instance using the prior exotics or the padding(can be traded/sold). But the bulk of it would come from areas such as >lvl 20 fractals(for dungeon runners), tequatal fight(for the zergers), or WvW keep lords (for wvw). Areas of the game where the experience would benefit from this ascended armor. And these drops should be limited, maybe enough to make a piece of gear each 2-3 days. Fairly similar to crafting, just removing the crafting aspect, make it drop from more select content and let it be thrown into the forge or something.

The crafting system was a bad idea. Ascended Weapons are just the carrot at the end of a treadmill.

Want to see crafting done right? Cooking, with its varied ingredients and almost puzzle-solving progression.

Whereas the other crafting professions follow such strict patterns, there is no way they are fun.

I crafted heavy ascended chest and leggins and then I realised that ascended is just something for people who likes to grind. There is almost NO boost compared to exotics… there is 4 +2 +2 more stats and i think +10 defense rating. Another +5 (30 in total) stats from infusions. So in total it is 66 stats and some defense… that is the same or even lesser boost than food consumables which are virtually unnecessary for players, they can just help a tiny bit.

Now I will slowly craft other 4 pieces of armor but I do it just for nice skin. I didn’t even buy infusions.

What I don’t understand about myself is, why I rather don’t sell the mats and hoard gold for the precursor I want since launch

Ascended tier should have been released at launch. It’s been nothing but a blight on the game since it was introduced (the time of fractals, Nov. 2012) and realistically, only the elitists have been able to make the best use of it.

Since inception it’s been a massive hodge-podge of cobbling together ways to craft ascended gear and modifying base material recipes to get the unprepared masses buying loads of said materials from the TP.

Not really I’m actually making a ton of gold selling mats needed for ascended. Since I don’t care about the “+10% damage increase” there’s been a lot of profit for me in this deal (saved some stacks before they were introduced ^^). Only reason I’m aiming for 500 crafting is for the achievement points

edit: Hmm but to add my share to this thread, yeah I think the amount of materials needed for each thing is just overwhelming, maybe that’s part of the reason why I’m not trying to craft one? It’s extremely expensive to have multiple sets or even change a build, what would happen if my current build gets nerfed on the next patch?

Just because YOU don’t want to craft, and its hurting YOUR method of making money off the trade post does not mean it was a bad move and Anet’s part and its hurting the trade post.

I think ascended armor was a good move.

It gave reason to craft when previously there was very little, but not overbearing to the point where you MUST have ascended armor to do content.

It gave value to previously worthless mid level materials. Now new players can make gold even easier than before for their gear before ascended. You can even make a fair amount of gold just leveling another character.

Ascended armor/weapons gives you a reward reason to keep participating in different areas of the game for the account bound materials needed. Its a way of giving players that actually play the game something as apposed to just farming it strait up on a champ train and buying it with gold.

Anet has acknowledged that the price of cloth items are high in there CDI thread, the amount of gold required for this armor at this moment is monumentally high and is something that they plan to fix. That being said, you can take advantage of the situation by selling your cloth items before the price of them is brought down by increases in supply.

Ascended armor (and the weapons previously) were some of the best implementations ANet has made. It re-balanced much of the TP and economy that had gone nuts with inflation after the Scarlet invasion grind. There are still some things that need to be balanced (silk/gossamer), but as it stands it’s very easy for anyone, any level to make money and get great items by simply playing the game. Specifically:

1) You made about 3 entirely unrelated points under one number. The crafting system is basic and might not be for everyone, but it’s still complicated enough that many people still don’t attempt it. There has to be a middle ground to cater to most of the player base. For the “hardcore crafters” they can level those 2-3 professions to get their gear. Also, what better way to prepare someone for content than to get sweet gear? I didn’t attempt a dungeon until I was 80 with exotics and guess what? Sailed through it.

2) So how is making better gear cheaper and more available to the player base a bad thing again?

3) Have you even crafted anything ascended yet? It takes awhile to get the 200/500 empyreal fragments needed for a piece/weapon. Same with laurels if you’ve been buying stuff for multiple characters.
