So we need globs of dark matter for crafting ascended weapons; that’s all fine & dandy. I have been playing this game for a year, during the past 12 months I have salvaged many rare/exotic items using black lion salvage kits, mystic salvage kits etc. So far I have had one glob of dark matter – why oh why is it so difficult to obtain an essential crafting material for ascended weapons? Also assume you might need some for legendary weapons too?
You cannot buy dark matter through the tp. Can you obtain any in dungeons?
This is becoming a source of frustration now.
Is it a case of crafting items between level 400-500 then salvaging?

What are people’s suggestions?

Ascended weapons were only introduced a few months ago with the Tequatl Rising release, so salvaging Exotics before then wouldn’t have helped. I’ve only salvaged 4 Exotics since that time, but I’ve gotten 5 Globs of Dark Matter from them. The only thing I can recommend is “keep trying”.

I have salvaged a ton of rares, never seen dark matter, never knew it dropped from rares? But like Zac I have received dark matter almost every time w/exotics.

Only exotic salvages can drop dark matter. Rares only drop ectos.

Crafted a knight’s pearl blunderbuss then salvaged and received 3 dark matter. Made 3 other exotic items and none dropped dark matter. Going to be a real case of hit & miss.

Yeah, I’ve gotten anywhere from 0-3 dark matter when salvaging Lv80 exotics with BLTC kit. It feels like it evens out to about one dark matter per salvage after a while, but those zeroes are painful.

They sure are plus the exotics are costly to craft. Even more ironic considering the inscriptions are worth up to four times more than the crafted item.

I think they should make it tradeable, this would make it easier for the people who do not want to rely on rng to get it, and it will help people who have excessive amounts of them to sell it to those who do not have enough. Specially that ascended armor is coming out soon.

Agreed, trade-able would be the way to go.

Do not craft to salvage! Buy the cheapest exotics on the TP and salvage those. Sell your own crafted inscriptions to fund this.

You can also buy finished product that uses the dark matter to be crafted. So technically you never really need the dark matter to begin with. But look at the TP, some exotics are below 1g these days.

I seem to have the best luck (probably no reason other than luck) when I salvage dungeon exotics from token vendors. Buy up as many of the 180 cost armor pieces as you can and have at it. Plus it gives you something to do with all those dungeon tokens adding up.

Results may vary.

I think I’ve only salvaged 25-35 exotics since the ascended weapons hit (all with a BLSK) and I have about 20-25 dark matter sitting in my bank extra after making an ascended weapon.

I have about 150 Globs of Dark matter All from using black lion salvage kits that dropped FREE from doing dailies and all while making a profit of over 1g per salvage.. so 1 × 25 salvage BLSK gets me about 25g + 25 Globs of dark matter + 35 Globs of Ecto + some T6 ore or silk

Very profitable.. and so easy to do! just salvaging exotics with runes and sigils that sell for more then the armor or weapon cost me to buy off the TP

Must use a BLSK though because if you salvage without a 100% chance to get the sigil or rune and you dont get it you are making a large loss.

This can also be done with Master salvage kits with an 80% chance of extracting the sigil/rune to SELL back and probably still be more cost effective then just salvaging worthless exotics just for the Dark matter globs. AT least you have a chance to get back all your money + make a profit on 80% of the exotics you salvage.

I can’t see the point in crafting exotics just to salvage them. It is a frustrating sink hole for materials that took the whole game to accumulate.

You don’t craft to salvage. That is a waste of money/mats. Buy the cheapest exotics you can find on the TP and salvage those.

It’s nice (for you) that you’ve gotten so many black lion kits from dailies. However I’ve only gotten one BL kit in the last few months. It’s not always possible to rely on ANet’s RNG for this sort of thing. Which means either buying them with gems, which means it’s not nearly as profitable, or using the Master salvage kits.

Don’t assume that everyone is getting the same RNG items you are and basing what is profitable on that.

I buyed some exotics with a superior rune which worth almost how the exotic itself worth, then I used Black Lion’s Kit to salvage them, with 10 salvages i got my globs (from 3 to 0 each try). I selled the runes and i’ve got back almost all my golds plus the mats from salvaging:)

Please, exercise caution in your salvaging, that you do not anger the RNGs…

Consider checking the TP for the most expensive Ori-imbued inscription, then searching out which dungeons have that on their weapons.

Right now the one inscription you can get out of dungeons that is the highest price on the TP is (surprise surprise) Berserker’s. So run CoF, CoE or Arah, buy Exotic Berserker’s Focii from the Vendor and then salvage with the Mystic or Master’s kit. You won’t get guaranteed dark matter every time, but you will get some with this process, as well as zerk inscriptions that you can use to make Zojja’s weapons or sell for 7+ gold apiece.

This is, of course, only one method, you can run Fractals and salvage those exos, or do the champ train, and salvage or use the gold to buy cheap exos.

Edit: You can use the Black Lion Kit, but it will most likely not return your investment in the gold exchange to buy it. You will, however, still get dark matter globs.

Edit #2: OK, I just did the math on the Black Lion Kit. Right now, it is a little over 20 gold to buy a black lion kit, and assuming the “rarer materials” in the description are the Ori inscriptions (which I doubt, but it is worth researching), then you would recover 12.5 inscriptions per kit or around 75 gold after TP tax for salvaging Focii.

Subtract the initial investment of 20 gold, and you end with a profit of 55 gold from 25 salvages. All of this is assuming a return of 50% on the inscriptions from the salvage which may or may not be the case.

The break-even point would be around a 20% recovery of inscriptions (not including other recovered materials), and the dark matter would be a bonus for dungeon runs.
