Is this a mistake/bug on Anet’s part for converting the LS event to a frac or is this working as intended?

I got mine from mithril nodes, since the wiki says orichacum only, maybe it’s a bug.

I’d say the opposite – if the orihalcum node is gone, but mithril ones remain, it was likely intentional.
Of course, since they cannot be upgraded to orbs, the azurite crystals are not that useful.

Why can’t I upgrade them like all the other gemstones?

yeah I wish they’d fix this too. Sentinel gear is crazzy expensive now to craft and I would really love some for my commander in wvw
