Hi, I just saw a thread in the general discussion forum where someone was talking about the prices of bolts of damask. This got me to thinking and wondering something. Now, I personally have never made a bolt of damask, because looking at the recipe, it would take me a week at least jus to save up all the materials – assuming not buying anything on the TP – for one bolt. And that’s saying a lot, since I do a lot of CS farming and salvage everything. Yet I believe you can make one per day.

So my question is, how many of you actually make one per day? If so, how do you get so much material? Do you get some from salvage and buy the rest? Do you buy all the ingredients? Or are you like me and just never attempt it (seems way too complicated a recipe for a game, too, and this is supposed to be my “fun time”!)?

I buy the materials and can only make one per account.

I have made one per day, every day (except vacations), since it became possible to craft them. I buy the silk, wool, cotton, and linen. At first I had a few months worth of cotton and linen but that eventually dried up.

The last time I did the calculation it was still profitable to make damask. Right now I’m accumulating damask in order to make a set of ascended light armor for the achievement so I’m not selling at the moment.

Yeah. It’s still profitable to craft and sell it. How much depends on when you place the buy orders and when you place the sell order for the bolt.

Do you guys buy the various cloth scraps directly? I’ve been buying up cheap armor pieces + bags for salvage, but it’s a pretty tedious process. (Not to mention I usually keep getting overbid, so the actual number of scraps I get varies tremendously from day to day.)

On average I make 1 bolt every 4-5 days, and I do not buy anything. Play the game, salvage blues and greens, and you will get what you need.
I shudder at how everyone buys their stuff, that is why it is so expensive.

It’s because not everybody plays in a way that will get them the scraps they need. If I wanted to, I could also alter my playstyle so it focuses on direct farming of events and areas that will give me cloth scraps. But then, I wouldn’t have time to map, do WvW/PvP, dungeons etc. It would essentially be me putting all my other in-game goals on hold just to farm cloth.

So I’d rather just do what I’m doing at the moment, gaining progress towards my other goals and then using excess coin (it’s not like I’m buying much else) to progress towards my Ascended armor.

I end up with lots of silk scraps and a bit of linen but i usually play in high level areas so wool i hardly ever see.

I can only make one once a week or so, even though I get every day about 60 – 100 scraps or so per day on average. Same as the other 5 materials. But cloth is used way more as it’s used for insignia.

Since they haven’t upgraded silk recipes after they increased costs to reduce the stock people had accumulated, now it has gone out of control.

One only has to see the trading post. The average cost of anything fine-masterwork is about 1-3 silver, excepting cloth that goes over 5-20 silver.
Scholar professions have it way harder to upgrade their gear with so much people buying the stuff to salvage for cloth instead to use it.

One can go gather wood and metal when in need by spending coin in waypoints to get to specific spots that are more likely to get nodes. Leather isn’t used as much as the other materials and salvageable leather stuff drops from furry creatures often. But there’s no creature you can kill specifically for cloth.

That has to change.

- Metal and wood have nodes. Some sort of “Locked Chest” node scattered in maps, opened with a “Lockpick” gathering tool (T1, T2 and T3 would be copper, silver and golden instead bronze, iron, steel) must be added to gather cloth and leather.
- “Farms events” could be added. They’ll be events with node icon in the map, and instead giving exp, karma and coin, when the event is completed a chest pops that is only visible by participants. The chest can be opened once a day to get some cloth. Things like pirates, bandits, centaurs, ettins, etc would do the trick. Some existing events could be reworked tho get an gathering node icon and pop a chest way.
- The cloth recipes must be changed to 2 scraps per bolt, and 50 bolts for damask.

Then things would go back to normal.

I crafted them as soon as I had enough materials, ended up with 31 bolts, I’m not a huge farmer though. Since I have no plans on crafting an ascended armor right now I decided to sell them.

I craft them as soon as I have enough materials to do so. On average, I make one bolt every 2-3 days, without having to buy materials. Sometimes I’ll get lazy and buy the 10 wool that I’m missing, but I don’t find that too bad.

It really depends on play style, and play area. If you play to where you can’t really farm the materials and you’re not making a bolt within 5 days, but you have the gold to buy the materials, buy the materials. Are you trying to make ascended pieces? Or make and sell for profit?

You can make one per day quite easily. The trick is to know what to salvage for the materials that you need. There are usually lots of cheap salvageable items in the TP if you know how to look. By salvaging them, you can make a profit even if you sell the resulting materials right back to the TP.

Absinthex… I want to make ascended armor for my necro. I don’t want to sell the bolts. But I’m also working on making The Dreamer, so that’s why I’m hanging out in CS all the time – I need T6 mats for that. But my plan is to make The Dreamer and sell it and then outfit my 3 mains in ascended gear.

At the same time, I’d rather not buy anything if I don’t have to. I’ve managed to get a lot of materials so far for The Dreamer without buying anything except the orbs, which were super cheap. I’d like to do the same for ascended – I don’t want to spend 500g (or whatever it would be) on bolts of damask if they’re viable to craft in a reasonable amount of time (like, I don’t want to horde materials for a year, but 4-6 months would be ok).

I’ve been saving up silk weaving thread to craft damask, but realistically, once I get to a certain point I’m just going to buy the rest of the damask I need. The only reason I haven’t bought it all already is that it gives me something to work toward… though now that there are some more things to do, I’m feeling less inclined to hold off on just buying what I need and going ahead with it.

I used to make one a day until I 500’d my Tailor. I haven’t made one in a couple months now.
I don’t get much cotton or wool, anyway. But eventually, I’ll have to get off my rear and actually start putting together the mats for my Light of Dwayna.

The secret is to farm gold and buy the loot bags that generate the T2 – T4 materials….or you can farm the loot bags directly (even with a LVL 80).

Another option is to farm champ bags and OPEN the bags with a T2 to T4 level character (the equipment will generate at the opening character level).

Be aware that there is a large gap between what it costs to make and what it sells for.
