Hi,

I’ve never quite dabbled with the Mystic Forge until today but I was wondering how it worked. I read so much about people wasting time and money into this, like it’s a bad gambling website…

What kind of things can I do with the Mystic Forge? Is it really worth the trouble?
And what about the randomness of things, and known receipes like for the pistols Lyss and Ilya?

The Mystic Forge is great for things other than legendary precursors. I obtained some good armors and weapons out of it. Sure, you could sell exotics back at a loss (so it’s preferable to craft stuff you throw in so you keep most of your gold since you’ll only spend some on T5 mats) or make a profit. You can also upgrade from T5 to T6 mats using the forge.

It works as a wonderful garbage disposal unit for LA too. Dont forget to flush. Lol
It all depends on what you are looking to do. Mainly for creating recipes for high priced items but also things off the beaten path. Just check reddit or search here for all the important stuff that suits your fancy.
But if you are not a fan of Random WTH is this? then stay away.

I primarily use the forge to upconvert materials. Converting a stack of silver ore to a quarter stack of gold ore (actual yield is random, within a range) can be cheaper than buying the gold ore. Also, given how difficult it is to acquire large quantities of t6 materials, converting 5s to 6s to have the materials to craft other items helps.

There are also recipies to create specific exotic weapons—the wiki has a list of many known recipies. Icy dragon swords, spirit weapon skins and so forth.

A lot of people ignore those two and focus on the third major use: toss in 4 similar items and get one random item back. The quality will never drop, nor will the level (note: this is based on the lowest quality and level put in, if you mix), but the resulting item is generally worth less than the 4 source items combined, and may be less useful / valuable than any one item. It might also be incredibly good and valuable. This is a gamble, and it works with runes, sigils, weapons, armor… all sorts of stuff.

Edit: The pistols you mention are exotics that fall into the second category above—known recipies with a guaranteed result.

When you decide you want to aim for your precursor, google “Plinx Orr GW2” → follow that for X hours → dump proceeds into Mystic Forge, it’s a lot of fun and a lot of people think it’s a good system.
