Gentlemen and ladies, something must be done about the Butterball Crisis.

With the recent addition of certain dairy products and derivatives of the coco plant into loot bags, the main source of cloth and leather has vanished into thin air. Decent armorers yearn for the tools of their trade, but instead find only a fast track to heart disease. And thus, I come with a simple suggestion.

Cloth and Leather should be gathered or hunted.

Cloth would be simple, as most are derived from plants or animals. Thus, including them into the standard gathering set would be easy.
Jute should be a plant in the world, akin to its real world analogue.
Wool should be found by shearing or slaying sheep.
Flax should be gathered and spun into Linen.
Silkworm nests should provide spun silk.
And finally, ancient magical spider nests or such should provide Gossamer. Use your imagination.

Leather doesn’t have a particular gathering tool, but the current game presents a simpler route. Neutral mobs like deer, cattle, doylak, and moose already roam the world. Take these neutral mobs, and add basic hides to their loot lists alongside slabs of meat. Slay the animal, tan the hide, and you get leather……exactly the way real leather works.

Every basic material that forms a pillar of the crafting collection should be gathered in the real world, not reliant on roundabout loot methods.

Cloth and Leather should be available to gather/hunt.

I have the hardest time leveling Leatherworking for this reason. Not only is leather a huge pain to farm, some recepies are just too high in leather. I farm for an hour or more and manage to discover one set.

Although, at the moment my biggest problem is getting things like Tiny Vials to drop, I have over 30 tiny teeth (which I think are used for one recipe in the entire game) and yet vials are possibly the rarest drop imaginable -.-

Hmm cant say that i am having some extreme issues with finding the leather, there seem to be quite a few mobs dropping the salvage skin stuff around, try punching around few deers when walking around you might get surprised, and salvage all the medium armor drops.

Althou i do agree that there seems to be an awful lot off butter around in the loot bags and chocolate… mmmmmm chocolate

Edit: bigger problem for me are the inscriptions that require like 8 of those crazy vials of “whatever” blood and bones and other crap that drops like NEVER.

The game surely is in early days, and it may be that some things may need to be adjusted yet – I don’t presume to second guess the intent of the developers!

I would, however, agree that the basic pillar of all professions should be something the crafter can gather, rather than being reliant on random drops, to obtain. The reality of an armorsmith, or weaponsmith, having their basic material available in game as a gathering node places some level of disadvantage to tailors and leatherworkers (and, yes, potentially to a lesser degree other professions).

This would “level the playing field” between all professions – the exception would (and should) remain cooking, as there is no single “basic” material required for it.

Gentlemen and ladies, something must be done about the Butterball Crisis.

I’m not aware of anyone having done any decent statistical analysis to prove whether the addition of cooking ingredients to bags has had any effect on the frequency of other ingredients.

It would have been fairly simple for ANet to adjust the drop rates so that the addition of cooking materials didn’t impact the overall income rate of the other materials. I honestly don’t know whether they did this or not, but I’m not convinced that the changes have reduced my leather income…

TP pricing isn’t a great judge of the supply of a given item, as it’s so heavily influenced by perception – if enough players believe that ‘item X’ has just become rarer, it’s price will go up (at least in the short to medium term), regardless of whether the drop rate of ‘item X’ has actually changed.

As a tailor I also feel the pain. Jute scraps farming was a nightmare and a terrible terrible waste of time. I took the easy albeit pricy route and purchased dozens of light armor from vendors in Queensdale. For 40copper per pair of gloves I received 2-3, sometimes 4 scraps of jute. It was before the TP was functional so I believe I overpaid sorely. Then again after finishing 100% of another location I had 120+ butter and 23 scraps of cotton, so I believe something must be done with the scaling.

I do think that skins should be acquired from animals, it has been that way in just about every game I ever played.. kill a cow… maybe get some leather from it. It seems unbalanced to me as well that armor and weaponsmiths can run around and mine their stuff and we can not.

Well I can tell you guys right now that animals already DO drop hides for leather. Here are a few examples:

Stag/Sheep/Does/Rams/Moose – Tattered Hide
Bears/Cows/Wolves/Boars/Cats (Jaguar etc) – Tattered Hide
Raptors…….

The list goes on and on.

As mentioned by someone else here too I also agree that the human areas seem best (that I have discovered and done drop lists for atleast anyway) areas to farm leather and cloth.

Having named the above animals for leather I would have to say that the best way to get leather however would probably be off Humanoids such as Centaurs as they also drop lootbags which of course we all know also gives a chance at Leather, Cloth and the more rarer materials we need such as vials of Blood etc.

Now if people are having problems finding the cloths, my suggeston for now would be bandits. Pretty much anything that drops an item with “Shredded” in it’s name is a source for cloths so keep that in mind. Bandits drop these a lot so find a place where bandit events happen often and you can get a lot. A good example is the farms in Queensdale NW of Claypool. You can kill the cows/drakes around there for Hides while waiting for the events for the bandits.

Anyhow for now, gl.

Agree with the OP completely – there should be a way to gather cloth and leather like people gather wood and ore.
Cloth drops are much much harder to get that they should be.

For example I made it a goal to farm copper ore to sell at the TP one day, and in about 1-1.5 hrs I gathered 350 copper ore. Yes 350. All in Queensdale, being bumped on and off overflow servers.

It would take me a whole day or more to get that much jute or any other cloth. Actually I have never even had that much cloth of any kind.

Uhm … except Armorsmith also have to buy those very same mats as well on top of the secondary mat, so … yes, I can tell you how difficult it is. It cost 3/5/8 thread of w/e tier you’re in to make an insigna insigna.

Oh and I have a tailor and an armosmith, I know how both of them work. In fact, making a hazard guess I believe why metal need a secondary mat to make ingot is to balance the out the cloth/leather can’t be gathered. The former you need to buy the do anything with the raw you can readily harvest, the latter you have to buy the extra raw that you can’t harvest.

I hate to reference WoW but they did it right on the cloth and leather departments. I think A.Net should look at what WoW did and do something similar.

As it currently stands the balance between gathering mats is completely off.

Secondly the amount of vials, venoms, dusts etc…. needed to craft insignia’s is retardly high imo.

One should be able to level a crafting profession concurrently with their character leveling. If you did not spend gold or spend time farming you would hit 80 and your crafting would be at 100 or less. That is wrong. The long grinds for mats/patterns etc…. should start at 400 for exotics and legendaries not while leveling the profession.

I believe this is something A.Net will need to address once major bugs/server issues are resolved. In the meantime good luck leveling a crafting profession to craft gear for you character while you level. It will not happen unless you spend lots of gold or spend hours farming mats.

Now that I think about it, didn’t some A.Net Dev specifically state during a Gamescon or something that crafting would be designed so a character could level it to obtain gear while leveling?

one question for you Mog, if people can be generally sufficient doing content without going out of their way to farm … then who would need the TP to begin with?

Second you’re wrong on the WoW account, I have 4 85 in WoW each with 2 different proffessions. You NEVER have enough mats to lvl your proffession by just doing the content. For example at the beginning of LK, you will only mine half of the Cobalt ore you need to craft out of the Cobalt tier, if you don’t want to buy from the AH you WILL have to go back and farm more.

OP, I am 100% behind your post. The scale of the loot lottery to get simple leather is really bad. That goes for trophy items as well.

Please A-Net – If I kill a deer, I should get hide (hooves and antlers as well). If I kill something reptilian, hey I should get scales and possibly claws. I kill a Jaguar, I should get very good claws.. Spiders – Venom Sac, humanoid – cloth/leather/metals (from their attire).

Just seems totally random.. I do not appreciate getting armor and weapons from wildlife!!

For those of you complaining about the butter from loot bags you are overlooking the fact that lootbags are more of a bonus item that gives you a CHANCE at some extra materials while not actually killing the intended targets for those materials.

As I stated in my previous posting Centaurs are good for leather and Bandits are good for cloths. Why do I say this? Centaurs drop Leather Straps and such which ALWAYS salvage into Leather. Bandits drop Shredded garments that ALWAYS salvage into Cloth. The lootbags are mere bonuses….. see the proper picture here and stop focusing on lootbags.

As a tailor I find it extremely hard to get the materials I need.
And yes I salvage everything! I got to the point where I salvage blues and greens just to get their ingredients. So I am always broke but that is another story.
I bought a really nice armour skin at lvl 20 and at lvl 40 I still do not have the materials to make the set!
I also farm on alts. But why would you have to farm mobs at all? It wastes my time and I do not have so much time to play.
It would be absolutely awesome if we could gather the cloth (jute, cotton) in the world like we do wood, plants and ore. For silk and gossamer someone here suggested spiders. It would make a lot of sense. You do not need to go out of your way to gather unless you really want to.
ps I don’t really mind the butter and chocolate since an alt is a chef.

pps I just read my post and if I sound like I want stuff handed to me- that is not my intention. I love crafting and I get a kick out of making my own gear- I just don’t want to waste needless time farming- or for that matter out lvl myself because I’m farming

Jute was easy to come by. Wool was a lot more scarce, now I’m at cotton and I never see it drop from loot bags as opposed to Jute drop rate back in Queensdale. What I do is, I equip some mf gear, go farm for mats like vials of blood or venom sacs , salvage the whites and blues, vendor the greens. I’d like to see some increase in cloth drops. Or make the salvage return more cloth. It just needs a little bump. You can’t really play normally and make more than 3 pieces of green quality armor the way it is right now. You have to farm if you don’t want to buy them all from the TP.

I agree. Not only are tailor’s and Leatherworkers not able to just gather their main material from a node they have to salvage everything, not allowing them to just vendor greens, blues, and whites which is a really good way to make money.

On the otherhand i’m also a cook and would like to see a better way to get eggs. Maybe cut down on the butter and chocolate and just give “bundles of ingredients” which would contain eggs, butter, chocolate, etc. This way it would only take one loot spot out of the heavy bags(etc.) and leave room for other materials again. I guess then you’d be getting a bag inside a bag and thats getting into some Inception territory.
