I’ve been away from the game for a while but now I’ve come back and I’m resuming my quest for a legendary. For example for the bones the mystic forge recipe seems to go:

50 T5 bones
1 T6 bone
5 T6 dusts (which is another legendary requirement)
5 philosopher’s stones

It says the output would be 5 – 12 T6 bones. Is this worth it? It seems like buying/farming the other materials needed, especially the T6 dusts, would make this not so ideal. I haven’t done the math for the cost of everything on my server, but is this generally recommended when going for a legendary?

it depends on what mats you’re promoting. use the spreadsheet by The Egg Baron. click the “fine materials” tab at the bottom. The last few columns to the right will tell you if it’s worth it or not.

If you are keeping the t6 for your own use – yes, it often makes sense and is better to promote instead of selling the t5. The linked spreadsheets include the 15% tp tax. Click on the detailed view tab of the eggbaron one and look at the pre-tax revenue to decide if promoting to keep is worth it. It usually is, because the market typically settles at the buy t5—> promote —> sell t6 equilibrium.

Get the dusts from salvaging ectos, at least you’ll get luck too.

I made several hundred of these recently, the average is 7 per forge. Depending on T5 prices it can be better than outright buying T6 but T5 has been high recently(2.5s a couple days ago), I made mine when it was a little cheaper(1.5-1.7) but T6 was still 40+.

Interesting – the website Vol posted assumes an average return of 6 t6 mats per promotion, while the Egg Baron spreadsheet assumes an average return of 7 T6 mats.

Is there a solid basis for either assumption?

Well, 7 is what you get out of the forge on average but technically the recipe requires one so you actually net 6. Sorry if there was confusion there.

That’s very true – thank you for the clarification. That appears to be what the Egg Baron spreadsheet is assuming.

However, the calculations on the two sources are still different.

You can see on the detailed portion of the spreadsheet that Egg Baron does not include the cost of the 1 T6 mat when adding up the cost of the materials for the promotion. The revenue calculation is done using an average return of 6 – but since the cost of the 1 mat wasn’t included, that’s the net return (as you pointed out.)

But the website does include the cost of the T6 mat in the cost of the promotion – and then calculates revenue using a return of 6 mats. That means the website is assuming a net return of 5, not 6.

Just wondering which is more reliable – if we know.

I made my own spreadsheet because prices change from time to time. I buy T5 mats and dusts when they are low, and sell T6 when its high. My method lets me know how much I can undercut T6 sellers without compromising the value of my skill points.
