Crafting Exotics: What!?
every exotic costs 5 ectos a pieces,at least the ones i crafted, accessories and light armor
It’s really not that hard to gather those materials. You get ectoplasm from salvaging yellow items level 70+ and you can get 0-3 depending on the salvage.
You can get orichalcum from nodes that spawn in Malchor’s leap, Frostgorge Sound, and Cursed Shore. Same thing with the Ancient wood.
It takes maybe 2-3 days of farming mats to get a full armorset of exotic gear through crafting. At least, that’s how long it took me when i first hit 80.
Think of it this way: Once you finish it, you will never need another upgrade.
The most annoying thing to find there is the wood for all those dowels, and it’s pretty cheap anyway.

You can also convert Mithril into Orichalcum and same for the wood and gossamer.

Yeah, pretty much. You’ll be changing the appearance with transmutation stones from time to time, but the base gear will remain…potentially forever if you stick to using the associated stats.
Just a few days of farming or just hoarding any mats you find while enjoying the game is already too much for being able to make max. stat items (that you only need to do 1x ever) these days? sigh
In almost every other mmo out there the major complaints about crafting are that it’s too easy to do and is just a timesink, not enough rare recipes available and crafted stuff is useless and/or doesn’t have any value when selling.
Here we have “rare” recipes that offer the same stat level as other high end rewards like dungeon gear and folks are still whining because they want to just click 1 button to have max. gear (there actually is, Go to Heart of the Mist, problem solved).
I don’t understand why people keep posting things like this, wondering why the best equipment in the game isn’t being dropped into their laps for little or no effort.
You can get all of those materials on the trading post or reasonable prices, or accumulate them in a reasonably short amount of time just from gathering and salvaging rares while playing in the high level zones.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get the “best” gear (though sadly enough, far from the best looking :p)
Just because I don’t want to drop several gold, or spend several days, on making a single piece of armor or a single weapon doesn’t mean I want it with no effort.
It just means that I don’t want to spend days, or gold, working on -one piece of gear.- It doesn’t matter that I might never have to upgrade, it just feels like a waste of time to spend the few hours a day I have to play before I go to work trying to get crafting materials together to make something…and have nothing, not even a single piece of gear (unless I’ve had an unusually lucky day with drops/been especially industrious about hunting out every little thing I can find to make money) to show for it by the time I go.
But, you know. Go ahead and keep being better-than-thou prats, putting words into my fingertips about how I wish I could make the gear with no effort, if you insist on doing so.
To those that didn’t decide to take the “Oh, look at the lazy plebe” route: Thanks for the suggestions about Ectoplasm and Forge conversion – I’ll definitely make use of those while making the armor, now that I finally got the crap together to make the rifle. I have crap luck (with an almost full set of Magic Find gear, no less), so it took me until about twenty minutes ago to get the rifle stuff. At least Leather’s cheaper.

There are also other ways of obtaining Exotic gear like karma vendors, dungeon gear, and WvW gear with Badges of Honor. Granted they may not have the stats/skin you would want, but Anet has provided multiple ways of obtaining said gear other then crafting.
So far, my experience with dungeons has been less than pleasant, which is, in part, why I’m even trying to craft this stuff – I seem to be an aggromagnet, to the point where the rest of the party even comments on how weird it is that everything goes after me. Combined with the zigzagging, sometimes extreme, sometimes lackadaisical, difficulty of some of the dungeons, I don’t think I’ll be even attempting them until at least a couple bugs get fixed and the dungeons get re-tuned.
Haven’t tried WvW, but will at some point. Never noticed Karma vendors with Exotic stuff, except maybe the Tier 3 Cultural Armor people.
Anymras, you need to spend all of MAYBE two hours to farm up enough mats for a single exotic. Nodes respawn in 5 hours, then do it again. 2-3 days tops for a full set. If that isn’t easy mode enough for you then nobody can help you.
What orichalcum and ancient wood nodes spawn every 5 hours? I thought they were on a 24 hour timer >_>
Yeah, they changed the spawn rates of the things. As they also take over, at random, Elder Wood and Mithril Ore nodes, I found a grand total of…I think three Orichalcum nodes and two Ancient Wood nodes in several hours of combing Frostgorge Sound (the plan being to comb through each 70+ area in turn until I found enough of them). I ended up just selling all the miscellaneous junk, Mithril and Elder Wood I found until I had just enough to pay for the last few things I needed, having bought Ectoplasm, Armored Scales and a lot of Orichalcum Ore in the days previous.
And again with the “Oh, you’re just lazy.” Man, is it so unusual that I’d like to maybe not have to farm/search for days (unless I get lucky) to make one piece of armor? To not have to spend two to three gold on each piece of equipment? I must’ve picked the one MMO with the most psychotically industrious playerbase to get into.
Yeah you can’t even get enough T6 mats in 2 hours. What are you going on about?! The ectos are quite easy to get (for some coin or after farming a bit of mats while just playing the game). Craft a bunch of yellow 80 equipment/gear, salvage for ectos.
I just crafted a full set of exotic armor and 2 weapons and it took me 2-3 days (3-4 hours a day) of farming just the armored scales that I needed for the set I wanted (Knight’s).
2 days…? I want to know your secret.
Look, if you are dedicated to farming everything yourself as some kind of matter of principle, its going to take you longer.
I have had 0 problems doing it on my engineer just playing whatever, and selling the things I didn’t want to buy the missing mats for what I did want.
It only took me a couple of days for me to craft a full set of exotics from wvw loot/coin. If its taking you longer for some reason, you may be doing something wrong.
That is not a failure of the game.
Of course… if you have the coin to just purchase them, but T6 mats are ridiculously priced. At least more than I’ll fork over. At any rate, as I said it took me a couple of days, simply farming my T6s, so it looks like we’re no different here.
Ultimately it’s not 2 hours, as someone had mentioned above. Pshh.

I think you are simply expecting too much for too little investment, honestly. You might feel that it takes too long, but the time commitment to getting the best statted gear available is quite low compared to many other MMOs. It took me approximately 3 days of casual WvWvW play + minor grind in end-game zones in order to farm most of the materials of my Exotic set. I am not rich by any means, but I also could have purchased most of the components off the get-go (have approximately 7g as of now, so not rich at all)
I think you just need to adjust your expectations. The rest of the game does seem to streamline you into getting all the gear you want fairly easily, but Exotics do take some (fairly mild, in my opinion) effort in order to obtain. Sometimes it is a matter of just finding the right locations to farm, and relaxing expectations. I think this is why some people are more angry over Legendaries/Precursors than others: their expectations of the game are different based on different experiences.
I’m not saying your view point is invalid or anything else, just giving my opinion.
PS: If you need any help with farming locations or anything else, let me know in game.
Do the smart thing……..forget about trying to craft your own weapon…….just spend the 1-3g and buy one off the TP. Unless you want to spend alot of time grinding you will save yourself lots of gold this way. Also, If you ignore crafting all together, earning gold becomes alot easier.
I spent around 3 days farming for my exotic jewelries (ok not farming but saving up ectos/emerald orbs/ori ores) and another 4 days of a bit of farming for my armors. It’s not the easiest thing in the world, nor is it the hardest. it’s… doable. Esp when you can get around 1g-ish at every orr run (i don’t mean karma farming, just running around CE/Malchor/straits doing DEs left and right whenever possible), its really not SUPER DUPER hard.

1 week for casual player to get BiS armor in a MMO game – and people still complain:P
My problem is that medium exotic armor is completely fugly.
^ I dunno, I kinda like the ‘duelist’ set, I just wish the boots were slightly different. It’s werid for an engineer to have throwing stars strapped to her boots.

so what mmo just gives you end game gear and doesnt require you to grind?

One thing about this game that is a different paradigm than other MMOs:
You are supposed to sell a lot of the stuff you acquire on the TP for $, and then purchase a lot of the mats you need for the gear you want. If you’re sitting there trying to get your 80 exotic gear, then be sure to sell off all your copper/iron/silver/gold/platinum you’ve acquired along the way. Sell most of your rare crafting mats (the yellow ones that make runes/sigils). Sell most of your fine materials.
You should have a lot of $ by level 80 if you’ve been selling everything and salvaging all the white items. Most of the mats on the TP are not “overpriced” in general (and make sure to use “custom offer” in most cases).
so what mmo just gives you end game gear and doesnt require you to grind?
Guild wars 1
GW1 was a CORPG and no MMORPG.
Sorry that you’re not happy with ONE of the ways to get an exotic. It’s hardly a grind to get an exotic compared to other MMOs.
You can spend 20+ gold for a complete set of 80 lvl exotics or farm your kitten off for crafting materials.
Or you can spend ~6 gold for a complete set of 78 lvl exotics with very little difference in performance.
