Q:
Crafting - How do I start?
That goes for me also. I’ve tried Guildwars 2 wiki/crafting, though it’s pretty comprehensive it doesn’t say how to craft from the get go. i.e it says that to craft something requires the use of Discovery, but doesn’t explain exactly what ‘Discovery’ in this instance is. So I about as stuck as you are Nori.
You go to a Master Craftsman in any main city, and tell them you want to learn their craft.
Go to a city, click on your map, and then click on the little eye in the bottom left corner, and turn off everything except the Crafting Stations. Then, you should be able to see them fine on the map. The Master Craftsmen will be by their respective Crafting stations.
Then, use the guides here: http://www.guildwars2-crafting.com/
BTW – when you click on a crafting station (that’s how you open up the crafting menu once you’ve learnt the craft), the upper most left button is the ‘Discovery’ button.

Here is a tip
If you go to the top right of your inventory and click the drop down menu, you can see “Deposit Collectibles”
This puts all your crafting mats into a special bank tab which is easily sorted.
If the items are already in your bank, just right click and it will also say deposit collectible.

I thought it might help for me to give a quick rundown on discovery. Basically, for armor and weapon crafting, you’ll need an insignia/inscription, and 2 matching pieces from the “Crafting Components” list in the crafting interface which are of the same tier as the inscription or insignia you’re using. For example: Vital Jute Insignia, Rawhide Chestguard Panel, and Rawhide Chestguard Padding for a leatherworked chest piece.
After crafting these, you would click on the discovery tab, then place each of the 3 items into the boxes in the right-hand pane. You would then see at the bottom of that pane that this will make an undiscovered item – assuming you didn’t already learn that recipe.
Cooking is a bit different from armor and weapon crafting, but I think once you get the hang of discovery mode for the other crafts, you’ll have a good idea of how to learn recipes in cooking as well. Artificer potions are more similar to cooking in the way they’re discovered than the other trades, in my opinion.
