Here is the scenario: I go out and farm a whole bunch of mats for an item. I get back to Lion’s Arch and compare the price of the item I could craft with said mats vs. just selling the mats individually. In almost every case I’ve found, selling the mats individually nets me about the same profit, many times much more, than just crafting the item itself. In essence, the mats are more valuable to the market raw as opposed to forged into an item.
What if some recipes were introduced that required some easily farmable soulbound mats that were farmed in out of the way locations. It would give crafters an item they can target to craft, but perhaps the rarity of the item would allow for a higher price.
I know there is a profit to be had in many crafting situations, but the margins are usually so razor thin it can pose a significant risk if you get somebody undercutting you.
