Crafting for a noob
I would pick 2 crafts that complement whatever class you choose.
Here are some resources for you:
http://gw2crafts.net/ <- least expensive way to get your crafting up, updates hourly so be careful about refreshing your page
http://www.gw2spidy.com/ <- Shows you what you can make for a profit. Also tracks item trends on the trading post.
If you need to buy something, make sure you use the option to place an order instead of just buying it straight off the tp.
One thing I wouldn’t do if you’re just starting out though… is to go above 400 in a craft. Right now crafts above 400 are only used for obtaining ascended gear. While you can make some money every day by doing some time gated refining, it’s not worth how much it costs to get up high enough to be able to do that.

Xanthic’s guide is awesome.
Crafting will not “build a bankroll of gold”; in general it is a goldsink. I mostly use it to level alts.
If you have a surfeit of skillpoints, consider forging for mats

If you’re not making money from crafting after you’ve leveled it, you’re doing something wrong

Thank you for the responses, I appreciate it
in terms of building a decent bank, is farming the best/most efficient option than?
Do yourself (and every player you ever run into) a favor and PLEASE don’t craft level up your first character….actually learning to play the game via REAL leveling (on at least your first character) is invaluable experience that teaches you how the game works (for both you and other players).
Ok…I’ll as the question everyone won’t…..where is a new player going to obtain 100G? IMHO, this will RUIN your initial experience with introduction to the game, but welcome to GW2 anyway.

Yeah fair enough, I definitely want to learn the game to the full extent. Leveling quickly shouldn’t ruin my experience i hope. I understand that this game always has open and dynamic quests.. but so far i have been taking it slow
The gold is accessible from friends who have played and favors in return for a favor in different games etc. Not to sound arrogant but I could have over 500G loaded today but that’s not going to help my experience. I want to try to learn how to create my own economy and sustainability in game
You can make gold in this game quickly once you reach 80.
You can make gold by:
-doing dungeons
-gathering select materials (t2/t3 logs for example)
-champ farming
-doing metaevents
-playing the outpost by flipping
You most certainly won’t make a ton of gold crafting (if you buy your materials). The barrier to entry for crafting is very small, so you always have competition.
If I were you I’d use that 100G to buy a good armor set that will take you through dungeons.
I don’t know the current Berserker (dps stat set) prices at the moment, but a fully geared Berserker character can be at least 25G.

I make about 50g/week with crafting without even really trying. I know others that make hundreds. It’s often better gold than flipping since there is a profit on top of the mats you’re buying via orders.
Buying exotic zerk gear is a waste if you’re just starting. Just do CoF in rares until you get that armor. Keep doing dalies/guild missions until you have the laurels/commendations for ascended trinkets and skip exotic jewelry altogether.

Buying exotic or even rares isn’t actually completely necessary at higher levels. You can run in blues and greens and nobody will know the difference. Slowly buy exotics and ascended, but don’t rush to do it.
Awesome, I am definitely getting a lot of different feedback which is pretty neat. That tells me there are multiple ways to succeed in this game rather than the cookie cutter mmo’s
I’ll soak all of this in. I’ll probably mess with gathering and crafting and do dailies to level and self find until I learn enough about the game mechanics to take all this advice into consideration. I really do appreciate the time from everyone

Sorry but it will. On your first character, it is less about how FAST you level, but in what manner. Intentionally leveling via crafting (again, for your first character) is a BAD idea. I’m not saying a few levels of crafting along the way is terrible, but you should explore the zones and complete hearts, and visit the vistas, skill points and points of interest if for nothing more than seeing the vast world of Tyria. Sure you can go back to the lower level areas at 80, but the experience is certainly NOT the same.
Certainly play how you want, but remember that I cautioned you.

that is an impressive amount of gold to start with considering you aren’t even done downloading the game!
when I started, I was given 5 silver. 5 silver is what I give all my friends who are just starting.
5 silver is like 10 times more than you need for levels 1-30, but it’s good to have extra so you aren’t always worried about going bankrupt or where to get gold.
when you start playing, focus on playing and exploring. I recommend saving 99.95% of that until at least you’re high enough level to be using rare-quality equipment (that’s around the point when you won’t just happen to find enough coin to buy everything you need before you could use it).
games add zones based on levels for a reason: you learn the basics of the game, then they add complexity, then they add more stuff. it slowly builds on itself. If you just jump in, you’ll end up buying a set of the wrong weight armor, or items you replace 30 seconds later, or 30 stacks of steel mining picks – just wasting your coins in general.

Yea but he’s starting with a few hundred gold, and he can salvage the rares after for ectos, so it’s not going to cost him much of anything… and then it’ll help him while running around the open world gathering, doing events, etc.
