Crafting guide for new player with no funds
Without having taking a character to crafting level 400 in a few months, but with eyes on the materials for ascended crafting, I would say go for Karma armour for protection as you level up. Weaponsmithing can work while levelling up, as wood & ore can be farmed from nodes and are more available than the fabrics you need as a secondary materials.
In the past, the fine mats for insignias/inscriptions were my limiting factor, but as long as you don’t want to go for a specific stat while levelling use what is there, mix with karma stuff and wear dropped items, too.
Still keeps a volume of Kurzick poems ;)
I’m following the 1-400 one and will switch to gw2craft.com when I get to 400. Note that in gw2craft, you can say ‘expand’ all discoveries, and get an idea for what you’re going to need for a particular tier of crafting.
The other thing I’m doing is leveling lot of characters through zones to get the mats I need for Crafting. There is no easy way for one character to get the mats for a Craft out in the world.
So, in summary: Yes, even outdated guides can still be used 1-400.

sorry, but there is no way you can get enough karma to keep up with your level, or enough crafting materials to be crafting items for your level.
GW2 tends to suffer from the same thing every other game in history suffers from: “I sent you in there to save the princess, and you struggled with hours of fighting and finally defeated the boss, completed the dungeon, and brought her back, let me reward your valor with this weapon that will make that dungeon easy, should you ever want to go back in there.” Basically, the materials required to craft level 50 items are located in areas where you need to be at least level 50 to not die in 1 hit.
Knowing this, I’ll recommend:
use any guide you want. You won’t be able to find everything you need, but you should be able to find most, especially the basic materials. Sell everything you don’t need and use that gold to buy the things you couldn’t find. I liked gw2crafts.net (you can select “Buy List (Only Tier 1)”)
It could be handy for you to figure out how to make some of the things it says to buy, such as “Resilient Green Inscription”.
Or, it looks like the Fast Guides will have you always make the components from scratch, so that might be more what you’re looking for.

http://www.gw2crafts.net/ automatically updates to show you the cheapest way to level each discipline. My advise is to avoid crafting entirely until you can afford to do 0-400 in one go, then do it. Any other method will cost you more gold.
Any guide that does not automatically update will be out of date within hours of it being published.
I dimly remember being new and leveling my first character. Pretty sure I just used whatever stuff dropped while exploring and doing hearts. Didn’t craft, didn’t buy karma gear, didn’t use the tp (too pricy for me).
If you’re just starting, I highly advise against learning both weaponsmithing and armour crafting as they use a lot of the same materials and you’ll run out of them that much more quickly (moreso if you decide to craft from 400 to 500).
As was said above, the guides to 400 will still work fine, but weaponsmithing and armoursmithing are an awkward combination unless you hit the ore nodes really hard, and even then fine materials will be a problem. I would advise swapping one craft with cooking.
My advice is to just refine materials until you are about level 18. At that point get your crafting up to 75 and you should be able to set yourself up with masterwork (green) equipment for level 20. This should also clue you in on how crafting works, so next time you’ll be able to do it more efficiently.
The points you want to look out for are levels 20, 35, 50 and 65 because at each of these points you can craft masterwork (or even rare for higher levels if you’re keen) equipment. It’s how I did it when I leveled my alt’s and I rarely had to buy materials.
