So I’ve just reached Level 80 but I’m in the 200s for Chef and 170s for Jeweller.
However I’m finding that I exhaust my available ingredients very quickly in the discovery tab and don’t have anything particularly amazing that I can craft at the moment.

The only recipes that interest me are the Dyes and the Desserts that give +X% Magic Find.
And, to be honest, the coins I can make off the ingredients in the BLTP seems much more inviting than holding onto all these ingredients, many of which take up space in my bank and inventory because they don’t have slots in the collections bank.

Could someone give me their opinion.
The more I look into crafting, especially cooking, I realize that the materials are becoming more and more widespread and rare. (Also I was unaware certain ingredients can only be bought from specific merchants)

So is it better just to sell all my ingredients and just buy what I need through BLTC?
Or can someone tell me if there’s some epic items worth grinding for at higher tiers?

If you’re seeing it as a grind don’t do it. Honestly if you want food it would be cheaper to craft it yourself, but marginally so in a lot of cases. Also JC is a good way to make 1g of mats into 3g-4g. If you aren’t having fun doing it then don’t. I have all 8 profs maxed and I’d say 95% of the recipes uncovered. Did I enjoy it all? No, but I did like the xp it gave my alts the ability not to have to rely on anyone else if I need something made.

Final thoughts are this, most food as I said you will be able to buy for close to what the mats are worth or would cost if you bought them solely off the TP and crafted them. However if you found them then crafted consumables you don’t have to pay anyone anything. Also if you don’t mind using 26% MF instead of 30% MF then sell your mats and give up cooking. Otherwise the mats used to craft them and the cost jumps up significantly. Not so much that it would make sense to flip a bunch on the TP, but enough that you would want to buy mats and/or farm them and make top tier food yourself. Hopefully I didn’t rant to much and you get the gist of what I was trying to get across.

Yeah, I got the jist of it. Obviously I’m not too savvy with the abbreviations but I assume JC meant Jewel Craft.
I must say I am finding jewelery at lest somewhat useful as the stuff I can craft is better than what I find. And I can at least sell what I no longer need for a decent amount of coin.

But I’m finding that Chef’ing is just too much of a hassle for the reward. The fact that I need to scour the map for merchants (or scour the wiki if I’m lazy) just doesn’t seem worth it.
I guess they made it that way because the buffs you get from food cannot be gained any other way. But the money and free inventory space is starting to look more and more appealing.

Maybe, like you said, its best to sell all I don’t need/want and then just buy a few select ingredients if I really need something.

Chef is the easiest and cheapest to max. If you want to take the long route, gather mats yourself. Or save weeks and just buy the mats on the outpost.

Crafting is essential if you wish to gamble at the mystic toilet and hope for a precursor.

Ha ha, Mystic toilet =P

But most of the stuff you can get out of the Mystic forge is just for visual bling which, to be honest, means very little to me. I like how my character looks at the moment. =P

I would eventually like to max my crafting skill but its not a necessity while my inventory space and money are. I guess crafting will only be a side mission to me.

No, it is not important.

You can stop doing it, just go and buy everything from the trading post.

Preferably from me :-P

When i was leveling my guys I decided to take the extra 10-15 minutes per zone harvesting everything i could find (free exp). After i got my first character to level 50 i realised that would not be enough stuff to get him to 400 of any crafting profession so i began making alts. It got to the point i decided to make 4 alternate characters to harvest and progress through pve areas at once.

Once i was bored of PvE (hearts, Waypoints, PoI’s, etc.) I decided to spend a couple days crafting. When i crafted i had enough raw materials to craft 1-25 by making ingots and planks on all 8 crafting professions then i bought all the fine materials needed to make one of each recipe using the exploration window. Since i had taken the time to harvest all the materials and only buy the fine materials (vials of blood, scales, totems, etc.) I only spent about 5-8 gold getting every crafting profession to 400.

I know making 5 characters does not sound fun to many people but it helped me understand the professions in a in-depth way when facing them in WvW.

I currently have 5 level 80s with 100% world completion and plan on completing 100% on 3 more characters to have an 80 of each profession, However i dont plan on doubling up crafting professions just for the fact of it makes you level faster. I dont mind doing 100% world completion because the last 3-4 zones i will already be 80 so there is no need to get the exp boost crafting creates. I hope this helps.

Feel free to talk to me in game Ascalon Fried Charr.
